Famous directors and people I've worked with and learned from - Hal Prince, Susan Stroman, Elaine Stritch, John McMartin and Hugh Jackman (just to name a few). Hugh really showed me how to be a leader of a company. I did BOY FROM OZ with him and he treated us all equally, didn't act like he was the star (though we all knew he was!). As a result, we all got along swimmingly and we all had his back. Also, acting onstage with him was like a masterclass. He stayed true to the direction of the scenes but they were fresh every night and always somewhat different. He really freed me up as an actress and made me not afraid to just go with the flow. Plus, he's Hugh Jackman, so going to work every day didn't suck...

Tari was an original cast member of THE BOY FROM OZ. She would also understudy Stephanie J Block as Liza Minnelli. I was able to see one such performance, where she played Liza for one particular performance of the show. At curtain call, when she came forward with all the cast, Hugh took her hand and kissed it, probably in acknowledgement for how well she had performed.

Love that Kelly named two of my all-time favorites, John McMartin and of course Hugh. I remember one TBFO performance that necessitated a quick rehearsal by Stephanie's understudy (perhaps Kelly...?) , who was unexpectedly going on for the first time in the role of Liza. Those of us waiting at the stage door were alerted by its late, colorful watchdog Kevin that Hugh had arrived early to rehearse with her. He didn't have to do so but wanted to make her feel more at ease. What a pro--and what a mensch.

Schreiber can't hide his anxiety as he tries to project an outer calm borrowed from his wife and from longtime friend Hugh Jackman. Even his publicist leaving a message saying,"Remember, this is an interview, not a confessional," can't keep him on the happy-talk track.

"Most of my life I've spent pushing people away," Schreiber tells me. "Most of Naomi's life she's spent gathering people around her. They both have their pathologies, and they can both learn from each other." Schreiber then grins. "She helps me say the right thing, she helps me look presentable, and all the things women have been doing for centuries."

There was a man who did the same for him. Schreiber was cast as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In preproduction, he met Mr. Wolverine, a.k.a. Hugh Jackman. Before that role, Schreiber had always believed the accoutrements of film actors — managed diet, trainers, a workout regimen — to be the part of acting he detested the most. Jackman taught him it was something else.

"My style was always intuitive," Schrei­ber says. "I never used to believe in working on your body. Anything that smacked of vanity to me was bad for your acting, but I learned that wasn't true. There's a whole set of tools available to you, and you're not using them because you're insecure or lazy, and I was both."


Since then, Schreiber has regularly worked with a trainer and surfed on the weekends. He has tried to learn other things from Jackman, including meditation. "He's very professional," says Schreiber. "He's disciplined and knows exactly what to say. That's why I'm with Naomi and why I like Hugh, because I'm hoping they'll rub off on me."...

I have never had a chance to see Liev on Broadway - I will if I get the chance.

But in 2005, I was lucky to have attended that year's TONYs -- and I saw host Hugh Jackman applauding so heartily for good friend Liev when he went upstage to pick up his TONY for Glengarry Glen Ross!

Liev Schreiber has been described as the finest American theatre actor of his generation by Ben Brantley of The New York Times --

I was looking for my hard copy files on the TBFO reviews and later articles and found something from Liz Smith. She shared this about Lauren Bacall, in an article about Hugh and TBFO --

Lauren Bacall went with me backstage to visit Hugh the other night. This legendary, great star who has seen them all, says Hugh is one of the most impressive performers she has ever witnessed. When I remarked that she had done her own share of hit musical theatre, she shook her head and said ,  "Not like Hugh!".

Fowler played the iconic roles stage roles of Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd" in 1989 and Mrs. Potts in "Beauty and The Beast" in 1994. Her riveting turn in the former garnered a Tony nomination for best featured in actress in a musical. She was nominated for the same award in 2004 for playing Marion in "The Boy from Oz," the mother of Hugh Jackman's character.

"I've had a lot of happy years on Broadway, but that was heaven. (Jackman) lives with such elegance and grace," Fowler recalls of her time in "The Boy from Oz."

Wright, the English director behind Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina, says Jackman was the only actor he ever pursued for the role. "I knew that I needed someone who was going to throw himself into this full-heartedly," he says. "The coolest thing about Hugh is that he doesn't try to be cool. I couldn't have an actor who was going to think about how he might appeal to the ladies or what have you; I needed an actor from the theatre who had a physical performance skill and was also a company leader."
