Singer and actress Samantha Barks has a great career ahead of her, but she won't just be doing musicals Samantha Barks, who plays Eponine in the hit movie Les Miserables, wasn’t able to join in the film’s triumph at the Golden Globes because she’s in a touring production of Oliver! But the young actress will be given permission to leave the tour a few days early so she can perform at the Oscars.
It’s still being decided what song will be sung, but Samantha will participate with other cast members such as best actor nominee Hugh Jackman, best supporting actress front-runner Anne Hathaway, heart-throb Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried and others in one of the rousing crowd numbers — One Day More or Do You Hear The People Sing.
The other idea being discussed is to have a medley with, perhaps, Anne performing an excerpt of I Dreamed A Dream (which she sings with heart-breaking raw emotion in the picture); Samantha coming in with On My Own; Hugh giving us his Who Am I? or Bring Him Home, and so on.
Nothing, however, has been decided. The Oscar creative team have to work out how other numbers work within the ceremony’s framework. For instance, Adele is performing the theme from Bond film Skyfall, but whether that’s being staged as a stand-alone song or as part of the Academy’s tribute to 50 years of 007 is still being mulled over. But back to Samantha. She finished the Dublin leg of the Oliver! tour last weekend. This week, she and the rest of the cast have a short break... However, Oliver’s producer Cameron Mackintosh has allowed her to leave early, so she can travel to Los Angeles to rehearse for the Oscars instead. Mackintosh, who also controls the Les Mis stage show, produced the film with Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan from Working Title, and Debra Hayward. He wasn’t at the Beverly Hilton when Les Mis won for best musical or comedy film, and Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman took home trophies. He had back trouble, so was unable to fly... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This must be for the opening number?? For those who know more than me, if they do a medley during the show instead of the intro, will they announce who will perform and what songs, or do they try to keep that a secret?

Other than the announcement to attract the audience, they usually try to keep the actual performance information from rehearsals secret.

There is official confirmation that Adele will be performing on Oscar night. The question is whether this has something to do with the tribute to the James Bond franchise ( celebrating its 50th year)...or whether it is part of the presentation of nominated songs.
If the latter, then we can anticipate that Hugh will be performing SUDDENLY, too. I hope that if he does, Issy Allen can join him onstage to recreate that tender and poignant moment.

The Oscars show is planning a salute to movie musicals that could include some of the biggest names in the business.
Academy Award executives are hoping to persuade the likes of Meryl Streep, John Travolta, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway to participate in the celebration.
As I revealed last week, Samantha Barks is also expected to take part. Ms Barks — an extraordinary talent — plays Eponine in Tom Hooper’s Oscar and Bafta-nominated film Les Miserables.
She’s playing Nancy in the musical Oliver! in Bristol and the hope is that she will be allowed to leave the production early, so she can rehearse and take part in the tribute during the Oscars show.
Carol Reed’s 1968 movie of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! won the Oscar for best picture, so it’s possible a number from it could be performed — and who better to sing it than Ms Barks?
I gather that Mamma Mia! and Les Miserables will be included, which would mean the involvement of Streep (what a coup it would be to get her singing Abba), as well as Jackman, Hathaway, Barks and possibly Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried (who was also in Mamma Mia!).
Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are steeped in the world of musicals, are working with the show’s choreographer Rob Ashford on identifying what songs, films and artists to include.

I told you right at the start that with producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan we’d be getting a big musical Oscars. The award winning producers of “Chicago” and “Hairspray” were chosen because of their strengths. They’ve already gotten Adele to sing “Skyfall”–and maybe more. Baz Bamigboye, writing in the UK Daily Mail Friday morning, reports that Meron and Zadan are planning a tribute to movie musicals.
They are said to want Meryl Streep and John Travolta (not sure why) plus Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, nominated from this year’s “Les Miserables,” as well as their co-star Samantha Barks. “Les Miz” might not win the Oscar but it’s going to be featured heavily on that show.
They’ve already got Rob Ashford to help them with the choreography. But there are plenty of others including Amy Adams, who’s a phenomenal singer. And why not re-stage the dance number from “Silver Linings Playbook” with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? Or the dancing from “The Artist” since Jean DuJardin is coming back to present Best Actress this year? The possibilities are endless!<<<
Hmmm... it may be a few years too late, but an audition for the roles of Norma Desmond and Joe Gillis, by Meryl and Hugh, if they get to do a number together may be a possibility ( haha - you know I still want that movie musical of Sunset Boulevard done!).
Travolta - can he still move as he did as Danny in Grease?

John Travolta was FANTASTIC as Edna Turnbladt in the movie "Hairspray" opposite Christopher Walken, so I think he could still move like Danny Zuko... :-)

They are as diverse as Lincoln, Argo, Life of Pi, Zero dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, even Django Unchained and of course Les Miserables. Although it is likely she will sing a tribute to Marvin Hamlisch, who passed away in 2012. This is beginning to be a night for remembrance, for past accomplishments - the Bond show, the musicals tribute, maybe something for Marvin H -- hmm...it looks like they are not too keen to focus on the films that have excited the various awards forums ( many calling 2012 as one of the best in films!)... or maybe Meron and Zadan will ask for more time for this year's coverage. Just guessing, of course Jo |
