This is not about speculations on the winners but more on the ceremonies on Oscar Night (February 24).Here are some buzz shared by Baz Bamigboye -- www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2264154/Samantha-Barks-On-Not-says-Les-Miserables-Eponine.html------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ On my own? Not any more, says Les Miserables' Eponine! By Baz Bamigboye PUBLISHED:21:35 GMT, 17 January 2013| UPDATED: 21:57 GMT, 17 January 2013. . Singer and actress Samantha Barks has a great career ahead of her, but she won't just be doing musicals Samantha Barks, who plays Eponine in the hit movie Les Miserables, wasn’t able to join in the film’s triumph at the Golden Globes because she’s in a touring production of Oliver! But the young actress will be given permission to leave the tour a few days early so she can perform at the Oscars. It’s still being decided what song will be sung, but Samantha will participate with other cast members such as best actor nominee Hugh Jackman, best supporting actress front-runner Anne Hathaway, heart-throb Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried and others in one of the rousing crowd numbers — One Day More or Do You Hear The People Sing. The other idea being discussed is to have a medley with, perhaps, Anne performing an excerpt of I Dreamed A Dream (which she sings with heart-breaking raw emotion in the picture); Samantha coming in with On My Own; Hugh giving us his Who Am I? or Bring Him Home, and so on. Nothing, however, has been decided. The Oscar creative team have to work out how other numbers work within the ceremony’s framework. For instance, Adele is performing the theme from Bond film Skyfall, but whether that’s being staged as a stand-alone song or as part of the Academy’s tribute to 50 years of 007 is still being mulled over. But back to Samantha. She finished the Dublin leg of the Oliver! tour last weekend. This week, she and the rest of the cast have a short break... However, Oliver’s producer Cameron Mackintosh has allowed her to leave early, so she can travel to Los Angeles to rehearse for the Oscars instead. Mackintosh, who also controls the Les Mis stage show, produced the film with Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan from Working Title, and Debra Hayward. He wasn’t at the Beverly Hilton when Les Mis won for best musical or comedy film, and Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman took home trophies. He had back trouble, so was unable to fly... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This must be for the opening number?? What happens to the movies without standout sung music? I wonder if the nominated songs will also be given a chance for a live performance? Jo

Somewhat related -- Hugh's 2009 Oscar Opening Number continues to gather steam on YouTube. To-date, it has gathered 5,079,000 hits!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Terhj8mjPwYAnd the comments indicate an amazement of how it foretold things like Hugh ending up in Les Miserables with Anne...or even the line he sang to Kate Winslet Jo

And this one -- www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=g8WI4o3b_N0And Tom Hooper was in the audience not realizing he is going to win the awards for The King's Speech...but ( admitted by him) wondering if Anne had heard about the Les Miserables film project ;D Someone says it is such "a sweet foreshadowing" Jo

For those who know more than me, if they do a medley during the show instead of the intro, will they announce who will perform and what songs, or do they try to keep that a secret?

Other than the announcement to attract the audience, they usually try to keep the actual performance information from rehearsals secret.

There is official confirmation that Adele will be performing on Oscar night. The question is whether this has something to do with the tribute to the James Bond franchise ( celebrating its 50th year)...or whether it is part of the presentation of nominated songs.
If the latter, then we can anticipate that Hugh will be performing SUDDENLY, too. I hope that if he does, Issy Allen can join him onstage to recreate that tender and poignant moment.

Deadline Hollywood confirms the same thing - but again no indication that all the nominated songs will be performed live! www.deadline.com/2013/01/oscars-adele-to-perform-nominated-skyfall-theme-song-on-telecast/I am not sure which are the other nominated songs, but is it true one of them was sung by the show host , Seth Mcfarlane himself? Also, I thought I read that Scarlett Jo performed one the of the other nominated songs? Must do some research! Here you are -- the songs and their songwriters! Baz Bamigboye shares a scoop -- >>>The singing, all dancing Oscars The Oscars show is planning a salute to movie musicals that could include some of the biggest names in the business. Academy Award executives are hoping to persuade the likes of Meryl Streep, John Travolta, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway to participate in the celebration. As I revealed last week, Samantha Barks is also expected to take part. Ms Barks — an extraordinary talent — plays Eponine in Tom Hooper’s Oscar and Bafta-nominated film Les Miserables.
She’s playing Nancy in the musical Oliver! in Bristol and the hope is that she will be allowed to leave the production early, so she can rehearse and take part in the tribute during the Oscars show.
Carol Reed’s 1968 movie of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! won the Oscar for best picture, so it’s possible a number from it could be performed — and who better to sing it than Ms Barks?
I gather that Mamma Mia! and Les Miserables will be included, which would mean the involvement of Streep (what a coup it would be to get her singing Abba), as well as Jackman, Hathaway, Barks and possibly Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried (who was also in Mamma Mia!). Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are steeped in the world of musicals, are working with the show’s choreographer Rob Ashford on identifying what songs, films and artists to include.

Roger Friedman echoes the excitement of a musicals tribute on Oscar night --
>>>Report: Oscars Paging Stars Like Meryl Streep, Hugh Jackman For Movie Musicals Tribute 01/24/13 7:49pmRoger Friedman0
I told you right at the start that with producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan we’d be getting a big musical Oscars. The award winning producers of “Chicago” and “Hairspray” were chosen because of their strengths. They’ve already gotten Adele to sing “Skyfall”–and maybe more. Baz Bamigboye, writing in the UK Daily Mail Friday morning, reports that Meron and Zadan are planning a tribute to movie musicals. They are said to want Meryl Streep and John Travolta (not sure why) plus Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, nominated from this year’s “Les Miserables,” as well as their co-star Samantha Barks. “Les Miz” might not win the Oscar but it’s going to be featured heavily on that show. They’ve already got Rob Ashford to help them with the choreography. But there are plenty of others including Amy Adams, who’s a phenomenal singer. And why not re-stage the dance number from “Silver Linings Playbook” with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? Or the dancing from “The Artist” since Jean DuJardin is coming back to present Best Actress this year? The possibilities are endless!<<<
Hmmm... it may be a few years too late, but an audition for the roles of Norma Desmond and Joe Gillis, by Meryl and Hugh, if they get to do a number together may be a possibility ( haha - you know I still want that movie musical of Sunset Boulevard done!).
Travolta - can he still move as he did as Danny in Grease?

John Travolta was FANTASTIC as Edna Turnbladt in the movie "Hairspray" opposite Christopher Walken, so I think he could still move like Danny Zuko... :-)

I don't know how long it's been since musicals have really been recognized, but isn't it about time. It's been 10 years since Chicago. It's time to get back to the good stuff >

www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-2013-les-miserables-be-415330------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oscars 2013: 'Les Miserables' To Be Honored in Movie Musical Tribute6:57 AM 2013 by THR Staff The telecast will also pay homage to "Chicago" and "Dreamgirls." This year's Oscars will pay tribute to a trio of movie musicals: Les Miserables, Chicago and Dreamgirls. "The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade," producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said Friday in a statement. Les Mis is nominated for eight Oscars including best picture, best actor (Hugh Jackman) and best supporting actress (Anne Hathaway). The 2002 big-screen adaptation of Chicago directed by Rob Marshall picked up six trophies including best pictures and best supporting actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones. Dreamgirls (2006), helmed by Bill Condon, won Jennifer Hudson a supporting actress Oscar for her role as Effie in the Supremes-inspired musical. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Not that I am complaining but Hugh and his 2009 hosting already paid a tribute to musicals ...and was much more inclusive than the three cited here. Unless this is just one of the night's celebratory themes and not the main opening number! This year has quite a few motion pictures of different themes and genres that Oscar predictors are having difficulties in zeroing on only one or two. They are as diverse as Lincoln, Argo, Life of Pi, Zero dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, even Django Unchained and of course Les Miserables. Hope this does not in any way prejudice the chances of Les Miserables because there might be suspicions of some form of favoritism in the night's celebrations! Jo

collider.com/oscars-2013-musicals-chicago-les-miserables/Oscars to Feature Tribute to Movie Musicals CHICAGO, DREAMGIRLS, and LES MISERABLESby Adam Chitwood Posted: January 25th, 2013 at 7:34 am When it was first announced that Seth MacFarlane would be hosting the upcoming 85th Academy Awards, most expected that the musically-inclined MacFarlane would include some sort of music element in the show. Indeed, ABC announced today that this year’s Oscars will feature a tribute to movie musicals of the past decade. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron revealed that they will showcase three movie musicals from the past ten years during the ceremony: Chicago, Dreamgirls, and this year’s Best Picture nominee Les Miserables. Though I’m admittedly a big fan of movie musicals, I find it odd that the program has restricted the field to films from the past ten years. There’s so much great matieral to be mined from the 30s, 40s, and 50s that MacFarlane could knock out of the park. Nevertheless, We don’t know if MacFarlane will be handling the tribute alone, with some help, or if another party altogether will run the showcase. Could we be in for a Seth/Stewie “They Both Reached for the Gun” rendition? We’ll find out on February 24th. Hit the jump to check out trailers for all three films followed by the press release. Here’s the press release: The Oscars will include a special celebration of movie musicals of the last ten years, the telecast’s producers announced today. “The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “We are excited to showcase three musical films — ’Chicago,’ ‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘Les Misérables’ — on our Oscar® show.” Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24 at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Interesting reactions from BWW'ers on the musicals tribute at the Oscars! broadwayworld.com/board/readmessage.php?thread=1055811&dt=16Does it sound like a completely reconfigured presentation of the three musicals will be made? Lol - the number from Les Mis must present the greatest difficulty to integrate Maybe DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING, but with completely different lyrics? Do you hear the people sing Singing songs of Judy and Bing It is the music of triple threats Who will dance and sing againSorry, for dumb attempt ;D Jo

Sue has reported this ( Barbra's appearance at the Oscars) elsewhere but there are more speculations from this media writeup --
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STREISAND TO SING AT OSCARS AGAIN January 30, 2013 by admin · Leave a Comment “In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand?” That remark from this year’s Oscars producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron was included in a news release today (Wednesday) announcing that Streisand will perform at the Academy Awards ceremony for the first time since 1977, when she sang the love theme from A Star Is Born, which won her the Oscar for best original song that night. Saying that the annual telecast “celebrates the artistry of movies and music” might be considered somewhat of a stretch, given producers’ increasing tendency to cut production costs by employing prerecorded music and studios’ virtual abandonment of the kind of elaborate musicals that brought Streisand worldwide fame in such films as Funny Girl, Funny Lady, Hello, Dolly!, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and A Star is Born. (This year’s Les Misérables is a conspicuous exception.)The Academy did not say which song Streisand will sing during the Feb. 24 telecast. The original song nominees include “Before My Time” from Chasing Ice, “Pi’s Lullaby” from Life of Pi, “Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from Ted, “Skyfall” from Skyfall, and “Suddenly” from Les Misérables. It was previously announced that Adele will perform her Oscar-nominated theme from Skyfall and that Norah Jones will sing the nominated song from Ted. Jennifer Hudson is also slated to sing one of the nominated songs, and in recent days there has been considerable speculation that they’ll be joined by Beyoncé or Catherine Zeta-Jones.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will the 5 songs all be sung by female singers? ?? Is somebody else singing SUDDENLY ? In my fantasy -- Hugh is singing with Barbra, though ;D Jo

Although it is likely she will sing a tribute to Marvin Hamlisch, who passed away in 2012. This is beginning to be a night for remembrance, for past accomplishments - the Bond show, the musicals tribute, maybe something for Marvin H -- hmm...it looks like they are not too keen to focus on the films that have excited the various awards forums ( many calling 2012 as one of the best in films!)... or maybe Meron and Zadan will ask for more time for this year's coverage. Just guessing, of course Jo
