TV spots have started -- www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/15/prisoners-tv-spot_n_3759306.htmlI wonder if the press junket for this movie will start with the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival ( Sept 6 showing for PRISONERS)? Although I have seen a tweet from a media person who said he has already booked an interview with the cast of the movie. Jo

From the IMDB movie page --
That long?? It didn't seem like that long based on the script ( which seems very fast-paced).
We'll see how it goes.

We rarely see Hugh movies which are rated "R". PRISONERS has been rated "R", according to BoxOfficeMojo.www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=prisoners.htm I guess the promotion will now be geared towards a more mature audience. The theme is very current and one sees reports of Amber alerts every now and then. I think it is how the father degenerates into extreme vigilantism which is the truly dark element in the story. Hope the dramatic storytelling, the creative aspects, and the performances are awards-worthy! Jo

About time! I can't believe anyone could have considered anything but an "R" rating for this. Hugh needs to do more Pictures with this rating.

Just an off-the-cuff thought :
The "R" rating must be based on the 146 minute-long movie, which is likely going to be the one shown at the Toronto Film Festival. What if they decide to edit it further, to remove the elements that raise its rating to "R" so it can be watched by a younger audience ( maybe mid-teens)? There are box office considerations that the film distributor (Warner Bros) may be concerned about.
On a similar vein, it seems AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY has also been designated an "R" rating, but fans are speculating that Harvey Weinstein will likely ask for further cuts to bring it to a more generally acceptable audience reach.
Or is the MPAA rating set, once it has been announced? Can it be amended?
Hmmm...

Really? For AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY? I don't remember anything salacious or violent in that 3-hour play. Perhaps because of the more than occasional four-letter word usage and prescription drug abuse? Still, that's a surprise.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of any film of Hugh's other than DECEPTION to earn an R. I hope they don't eviscerate PRISONERS just to get a PG-13.

The "R" rating for AUGUST : OSAGE COUNTY is per Box Office Mojo -- www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=augustosagecounty.htmIt is the fans on the MOVIE AWARDS BOARD of IMDB which are now speculating whether Harvey Weinstein will work out an amended MPAA rating for AUGUST. I guess the theme of extreme violence in PRISONERS is a fairly strong basis for its current rating. Jo

I've just re-read the first draft of the script and re-watched the trailer/TV spot ( I have done it a few times before but this time, the anticipation factor was on overload) smiley-excited001 I can relate to the movie even better now -- I am trying to imagine how the other images of the storytelling would look like ... I am very excited now to see the movie, and of course to see how Hugh acquits himself with the role! I did not stop one beat until I had gone over the 108 pages again smiley-happy036 Jo

I can´t read the script. The only script for Hugh´s movie I read was Real Steel. I want to be surprised and I hope nobody will spoil it on IMDB or elsewhere before it gets here (in the end of October). I would create an image of characters, places and story and it would spoil the movie for me as well. I like movies with surprising twists and the R-rating sounds very appealing.

I would create an image of characters, places and story and it would spoil the movie for me as well. I like movies with surprising twists and the R-rating sounds very appealing. Just curious, did you read books as a kid and then a couple years later they make a movie of it? I've read countless books that have been turned into movies, as I used to be an avid reader...less so today, but I still do my share of reading. There were certainly some movies that made a shambles out of a favorite book but more often it was close enough and I enjoyed seeing 'my' characters come to life on the big screen. Some times I likes the changes that were made to flesh out a character more or elaborate on a plot point. Maybe just the way I see things but I always found it interesting...even when I hated what they did. <rant> I liken reading a script to that experience for me. The script usually goes through re-writes by the time the movie comes out so there are changes, but even so it's the same as if I had read the book. I have often read a script long before casting so I find it interesting to see how someone completely different from what I pictured will do a role and bring a character to life...just like 'my' book characters. Anyway if you don't want any spoilers that's a pretty tall order for the Internet and you may set yourself up for disappointment. The Internet is spoiler city after all. smiley-rolleyes010 As for the R rating that has been discussed a bit, I really hope they don't try to clean it up for a PG13 rating. Now that would definitely spoil the movie. Given the director, I can't see that happening though. Speaking of the director, has anyone else seen Incendies? Any thoughts, comments etc? Sue

Don't go to the IMDB board, Lenka -- someone wrote down all the twists and the climax and the whodunit! Someone did ask him for all the juicy spoilers -- so he gave a list of those who were done in and how it happened. LOL - left nothing to the imagination.
To me, an "R" rating does not guarantee that the movie is excellent. Neither does a PG-13 rating connote that the movie is not for mature audiences and has a lesser quality ( The Prestige was PG-13, for one).
PRISONERS may be rated "R" but to me, all it contains are day to day realism and things you read about that happens in many places. What could be more violent than all the school shootings that have happened, to as young as kindergarten kids ( Dumblane, Scotland), compared to what Keller was doing to get some results? Yikes, you see more violence and gore in all the TV crime procedural dramas! PRISONERS could be a disturbing movie to some...but these things happen ( Amber alerts and vigilantism). TAKEN ( rated PG-13) was a more violent movie because of all the ammunitions he used up to rescue his daughter. Kill, kill, kill - was the theme even if the father simply wanted his daughter back.
Interestingly, when I read the source material for THE PRESTIGE ( Christopher Guest?), I thought it had some of the eeriest/weirdest resolution in any storytelling. The way Angier was slowly evaporating and turning into a ghost ( and storing his "prestiges" in a cave) was very disturbing. At least in the movie version, Nolan changed the ending somewhat -- but still very eerie and disturbing to see all those drowned Angier reproductions in the tank! There was an inherent cruelty in what Angier was doing -- recreating himself and drowning them! Yet, that movie earned a PG-13 rating!
THE WOLVERINE earned a PG-13 rating. Yet, we know all that raging violence and gore was taken for granted and did not get the "R" stamp. LOL - Fox would have done everything ( edit, edit, edit) to get a hard PG-13 rating or it would have missed all that young fanboy base wolverine
Of course we don't know how Denis Villeneuve ( who was highly praised for INCENDIES and so impressed Jake Gyllenhaal in their work on a new film that Jake signed up again to work with him in PRISONERS) helmed the movie interpretation. It could have more gut-wrenching scenes than the script implied! I hope that if he gave it a slightly different translation on film, that it was to add up to the excitement and emotional weight of the storyline and the performances!
I hope PRISONERS does get the attention of movie audiences and critics and awards voters ( so far, it is not showing up in early polls, such as GoldDerby). Maybe after the showing in Toronto, people will start talking about it!

I AM SO ANGRY THAT ANYONE WOULD GIVE AWAY PLOT POINTS, SPOILERS, AND THE CLIMAX OF A MYSTERY FILM THAT HASN'T BEEN RELEASED!!!!!!! THESE INTERNET NAZIS HAVE SUCH A FEELING OF ENTITLEMENT, AND SEEM TO GET THEIR JOLLIES BY SPOILING THINGS FOR EVERYONE ELSE. IF YOU TRY TO STOP THESE SPOILER PUNKS, THEY SCREAM "FREEDOM OF THE PRESS!" UNBELIEVABLE ########!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In fairness to him, the opening poster did ask for ALL the spoilers! The responder did precede his post with a " HEAVY SPOILERS" notice. He thought he was just satisfying the curiousity of the other posters and wasn't being mean. But I guess one should avoid these boards until after one has seen the movie, to be safe. Although I myself am keen to know most things about a movie before it opens ( including reading the script and all the tweets of the creative teams, e.g., Bryan Singer) Jo

Birchie, I read a lot of books even now but so far, I was lucky that the movie was good (LOTR) or I read a book AFTER the movie (the only movie which I think is better than the book was Chocolate) so I don ´t have a problem with it. I am a little worried about A Book Thief they made and it should premire this Fall... But movies are...special for me. As a huge movie fan, occasional reviewer and someone who played with a thought to study directing, I just enjoy all aspects of a movie. I often read scripts after the movie but never before. Especially when there is a surprising end. It is a rule, just like NEVER watch CamRips and do other nasty things some people do I am avoiding IMDB Prisoners board now. There are idiots on IMDB boards who, I think, are mental or what and write spoilers even into the title of the thread. I got mad after I went to Game of Thrones board and some idiot spoilt it all So I decided not to go there. I am pretty successful avoiding spoilers when I want to, but I am worried that since the premiere here is in October, it may be told somewhere.

Even though they have spoiler tags they don't get used half the time. I've even been guilty of it myself during the Les Miserables postings there, though in defense, I think it was usually where things were already revealed or people were asking for the info...that happened a lot back then. I think it gets harder as a movie is out for a period of time so more discussions take place re: scenes, characters etc. I wish this board had spoiler tags but we've found various work-arounds for it so far. I hope we're doing OK in that. The best one is to have a whole thread with a big spoiler tag in the heading. Feel free to call us on it if you think we need to do better. Sue

Have we seen this clip before? Seems like Jake is always on the receiving end I wonder if the ending will be changed somewhat or remain as Guzikowski first envisioned it? Jo

I just noticed the crucifix he's wearing in that mirror picture. Also I did a new screencap of a picture we saw earlier. I don't know if it was a better trailer that I captured it from but I thought it was a little higher resolution so I'm posting it again. I know I'll be crying in the theater during this scene! Sue

Keller Dover was a Bible-quoting family man -- so it is not surprising to see the crucifix necklace, as an affirmation of his faith.

Just saw a PRISONERS commercial during the Dodgers/Cubs game (second inning no score). Great marketing! GO DODGERS! Same during Red Sox/Orioles game. I see trailers & TV spots for his movies often during games. They probably think they're marketing to the guys...little do they know...we're there too Sue
