I had never heard of the XMEN superheroes, let alone the clawed one, when I first saw the first movie of the franchise -- unfortunately, I was too late for the cinema and caught it for the first time on DVD!

Why They Couldn’t Cut Anna Paquin From X-Men: Days of Future Past

Because X-Men: Days of Future Past uses time travel to unite two expansive ensemble casts — including the actors who starred in the original X-Men trilogy and the actors cast as their younger counterparts for X-Men: First Class — a few returning stars would inevitably be given short shrift, simply so the movie wouldn't buckle under all that allocated screen time. Even so, when reports broke a few months back that Anna Paquin's Rogue would be snipped from the film entirely, fans were upset to hear that one of the primary protagonists from the first X-Men film had gone missing.


Still, Paquin's name popped up in the new Days of Future Past trailer that went live last night, and when BuzzFeed asked 20th Century Fox to clarify her inclusion, the studio confirmed that Paquin would indeed remain in the film, if only as a cameo. In fact, Vulture can add that Paquin was never really gone: Rogue is pivotal in a certain scene and would have been impossible to cut out of the movie completely.


Mild spoilers follow for the film, out May 23.


Days of Future Past begins in a dystopian future where the few remaining mutants are being hunted by fearsome robotic Sentinels, and both Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) decide they can change their present by sending Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) into the past, where he can alter the course of history that will eventually lead to those Sentinels being created. To do this, they employ mutant Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), who is able to project Wolverine's consciousness back in time and into his younger body.


While Wolverine is gallivanting around in the past with the X-Men: First Class cast, though, Kitty Pryde is injured, and her future hold on Wolverine becomes tenuous. In order to preserve the time travel bond, then, the X-Men must find Rogue, who has the ability to absorb any mutant power.


Unfortunately, Rogue is being held prisoner at Xavier Mansion, which has been transformed into a Sentinel-guarded military base, and the mission to find and rescue her — an expensive, lengthy sequence that involves Professor X, Magneto, and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) — was sliced from the film in postproduction after Fox executives worried it would pad the running time to over two and a half hours. Rogue is still brought in briefly to absorb Kitty's power and tend to Wolverine, but the machinations to get her there will now happen offscreen.


(Still, while Paquin has been reduced to a mere cameo, she's not the only returnee from the original trilogy who will make a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in Days of Future Past: In addition to top-billed stars like Stewart, McKellen, and Halle Berry, Vulture has learned that three more mutants filmed secret cameos in the film. To even hint at their identities, though, would reveal a major spoiler.)


Ultimately, the decision to cut a major set piece set in the future means that the final film devotes more of its running time to the First Class characters, which may be a wise move on Fox's part: These are the actors, after all, who will star in X-Men: Apocalypse, which is already scheduled for May 27, 2016. That film, like Days of Future Past, will be helmed by original X-Men director Bryan Singer.

The more I read reactions from fans and film sites to the 3rd trailer and the more I rewatch it ( it has had 3.5 million views, not including the other versions, in slightly less than 24 hours of release ) -- the more I am convinced that this trailer was aiming for general audiences!


It focuses on laying the premise for the storyline, introduces the best-known facets of the key characters, teases with superb action scenes, and uses Mr. Point Man/Mr.Versatility Hugh Jackman to entice the movie-going public to come and see this latest franchise sequel/inbetweenquel ( as Bryan Singer labels it). General audiences are not like fanboys who insist on asking for explanations for any timeline or character inconsistencies ( compared to previous movies of the franchise) and do not care or whine that an often-featured popular figure is still in it (unlike some fanboys who insist that it is time for other key XMEN characters to shine...even asking that Wolverine be retired because Hugh Jackman is starting to sport grey in his beard ).


I am glad that we will get to see it a day ahead of the USA release, so I don't have to read about all the fanboy rants and raves( hopefully) before I get to see it pristine. But there is no assurance that I won't get to share the screen with local young fanboys, too ( sometimes accompanied by parents, whom we occasionally recognize - LOL!).

All in a day's work for Hugh! Hopefully, when he hosts the TONYs two weeks after the movie opens, that it will be riding high in movie audiences's delight and affection!

Someone on SHH posted that the London premiere will be on May 12.

Will Hugh be able to make that if he is supposed to be at the Singapore premiere on May 14? There are direct flights from London to Singapore but that is a back breaker -- although of course he will likely fly first class ( with bed amenities)

I think that at this point, Hugh will be the key personality in all the premieres!

Hmm... interesting that Melbourne, not Sydney ( where the Fox Studios are located), is getting the premiere honours! Unless he is flying from one city to the other?

The X – Men trailer opens ominously, much like all action-hero adventure films do, with Hugh Jackman, who plays the Wolverine, declaring that he was “sent here for you. From the future. Fifty years from now.” Then he declares that the person in the future, who sent him here, was the person he was talking to!

Much action abounds in the trailer, which deals with the coming together of the X-Men team. Jackman’s character Wolverine rounds up the gang, starting with Mystique and Magnito, who is broken out of a high-security prison.

Visuals of car chases, a stadium collapse, a fight between the robotic enemy and the X-Men are especially stunning. The Hollywood film has left no stone unturned, to ensure this film is a pure visual treat for action fans.

And 15 years ago, this was where it all started -- a reading for the part with Bryan Singer himself reading the other parts ( mostly Rogue). Hugh has said that he came to the movie a little late ( check out the calendar details in the background) - did this happen in September or a little earlier? The screen test with Anna Paquin must have happened after this?

On a personal note -- after I had seen him in Oklahoma! just a few months before this reading in 1999 ( the show closed around June or so), I was waiting for Mr. Jackman for his next theatrical appearance in London. LOL - I did not know that he had chosen to go westward, Hollywood-west ...until a few years later, way after the first XMEN movie opened worldwide!

The third trailer has generated over 10 million hits since it was released 4 1/2 days ago. The second trailer has generated only 13.6 hits to-date when it has been in release since March 24. The first trailer, which had so much anticipation and was released end-October 2013 has generated 26.7 million hits to-date ( that would be almost 6 months in release now).

I think the second trailer, while an excellent look at the dystopian future and how the past can help change that outlook was rather more grim and also focused on too many action scenes. The third trailer had a better script and laid out the storyline premise much better, while reintroducing the key characters. It has a lot of lighthearted moments and of course a lot of Wolverine one-liners ...Some have observed that the third trailer was more audience-friendly, for the general movie-going public.

On the feedback section, someone asked how often the readers have seen the trailer. Interesting responses, which reflect on their interest in the movie. Someone said "More than my age...and I am already old" - LOL. It wasn't me but it resonated with my own fascination with the trailer.

Hope the movie is an excellent blending of the serious and the funny moments that blends what the fanboys have expected from their comic books and the excitement and the humor that a fullscale blockbuster needs to entice massive audiences into repeat patronage!

I think I am already planning how to see it more than once
