This could be a very smart game of contract negotiations as he has said hed be Logan for as long as he can.
look at the fact that First Class being a brilliant film his name wasnt on the poster etc and it did good business like 2-400 million worldwide. Then fast track to 2013 THE WOLVERINE made $350-400million alone with Jackman. 1 year later when every cast member was in it and Jackman was focused more it made 7-800 million he brings tye numbers in. And after Apocalypse Jennifer Lawrence is gone what about Mcavoy & Fassbender? Will they wanna stick around? Those names bring the people inonce gone itll only be Tatum as Gambit but with Jupiter assending doing shit business makes me think the Gambit movie isnt the best thing to do.
Jackman also knows the fans WANT MCU crossover HE wants it as well, if Apocalypse doesnt make more money than DOFP and the F4 makes less money than ANTMAN and DEAPOOL becomes next years DREDD FOX will seriously look at SONY's move and think that train needs afew more passengers

What I find odd about the Instagram message was that it was announced at this time ( when Wolverine 3 is still far off from filming). Even James Mangold did not see that kind of social media message coming (it seems from his brief message/response that Hugh has not been actively discussing the project with him at this point). I suspect it wasn't even uploaded by Hugh himself ( I think when a message is signed "HJ", that is an authorized upload by him but not himself doing it - just my theory, of course ). Besides, when was this photo taken? He is in Austria now completing outdoor filming in the area. I doubt that he brought his "claws" with him so a photo can be taken? Also, with him located somewhere in the Alpine area, he would be hard to reach by media. I have always thought that if and when he did make the "farewell" announcement, it would have been in some press meeting ( say, during the promo for WOLVERINE 3) -- it is kind of unusual to bring it out like this, when he is nowhere to be seen. Assuming the photo was taken before he went to Germany for the filming, why was it uploaded now?

I just hope he clarifies all these to set the facts straight about his departure from the role!

On the other hand, could the message have been prodded by FOX itself, to gauge fan reaction? Should they recast Wolverine? Even a younger Wolverine ( although if they follow the comic books, Wolverine is supposed to have been born more than century ago, so that would be hard to reconcile with the First Class era)? Do you remember the recent news about Matthew Vaughn wanting to bring in a young Wolverine for First Class - but it did not happen? Is there room for a few more team movies for Wolverine ( maybe even with the original cast)?

With the departure of Jackman, Lawrence, and possibly McAvoy and Fassbender ( the latter says he will only come back if there is a good script - I guess meaning that Magneto continues to be a focus) as the latter two actors follow a different career trajectory, maybe Fox is apprehensive that they might be left with an unproven young cast and the possibility that C.Tatum and R.Reynolds may not hit the gold mine as Jackman did.

Forbes is of course business-oriented but it highlights some excellent points on why Hugh's departure from the Wolverine role is such a surprise or hard to fathom. It is way more insightful than any other speculations from film sites.

'X-Men' Shocker: Why Hugh Jackman Quitting Wolverine Is Such A Surprise


Hugh Jackman is apparently hanging up Wolverine’s claws. That was the news drop on Saturday afternoon, when Jackman posted a Facebook photo with caption “Wolverine… one last time,” which sent the Internet into a tizzy about whether or not Hugh Jackman was indeed quitting the role that made him a movie star, as well as, if that was the case whether or not said “last time” referred to the third Wolverine film or the upcoming X-Men: Age of Apocalypse. The Wrap confirmed that the movie in question was indeed James Mangold’s upcoming sequel to The Wolverine (which would technically make it the third Wolverine spin-off), but that doesn’t necessarily rule out cameos in X-Men: Age of Apocalypse and/or the upcoming Ryan Reynolds Deadpool film. Having said all of that, presuming that Hugh Jackman isn’t just negotiating in the press, it is indeed a surprise. Jackman recently said he’d play the role until he retired. Jackman didn’t just become a movie star after X-Men, but he kept doing that role for fifteen years while using that stardom to have a varied and diverse theatrical acting career. That he would choose to walk away from the role is a surprise because the role has in no way inhibited his ability to star in a wide variety of mainstream motion pictures. He became a movie star at precisely the right time and was able to hold onto the role even in an era of reboot-and-recycle.



As I’m sure you all know, Hugh Jackman was a relative unknown, an Australian theatre actor who was plucked from obscurity for his American film debut as a last-minute replacement for Dougray Scott. Scott was supposed to play Logan/Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men but production delays with John Woo’s Mission: Impossible 2 (where Scott played the heavy) got in the way. Hardcore fans complained that Jackman was too tall and too handsome to play the short and somewhat feral Canadian, but few complained about the results. X-Men was as surprise smash hit for 20th Century Fox, debuting with $54 million in mid-July 2000 which was the biggest debut ever for a non-sequel and one of the very biggest opening weekends ever at the time. The well-reviewed film of course solidified off the second wave of comic book movies and turned Jackman into a star. It was indeed his chemistry with Anna Paquin and the rest of the cast that made the film work as well as it did. Hugh Jackman played the iconic clawed warrior as a mix of Clint Eastwood gruff and a younger Mel Gibson’s manic onscreen empathy, in seven different X-Men films between 2000 and 2014, and yes I’m counting his cameo in X-Men: First Class. He was the glorified lead in arguably six of those X-Men films, including of course the two spin-offs X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009 and The Wolverine in 2013.



Since X-Men came out in 2000, Hollywood still made a variety of would-be star vehicles for someone like Jackman, and Fox took a whole three years in between X-Men films. Jackman immediately jumped into projects like Swordfish, Kate and Leopold, and Someone Like You while finding time to earn a Tony on Broadway as Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz. That has been the pattern. Because there were long stretches in between X-Men films, and perhaps because most of them were ensemble films that didn’t require 100% of Hugh Jackman’s time, and most importantly because he became a star while Hollywood was still making non-franchise star vehicles, he was able to have an uncommonly varied and versatile career. In between X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, he starred in a failed franchise starter in Stephen Summers’s Van Helsing while also hosting the Tonys three times. He took the three year-break between X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine to make Woody Allen’s Scoop, Chris Nolan’s The Prestige, two animated films (Flushed Away for DreamWorks Animation and Happy Feet for Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.), Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, a little-seen Ewan McGregor/Michelle Williams erotic drama Deception, and Baz Luhrmann’s Australia.




Along with his periodic trips to the stage, he also (successfully) hosted the Oscars in 2009. He won an Emmy for hosting the Tonys in 2005, so if he ever does win an Oscar, he’ll be 3/4 of the way towards the EGOT. Since X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Jackman has played Wolverine three additional times, with 1-3 more on tap depending on the breaks, while also starring in a deluge of (mostly) starring roles in a range of projects. He nabbed his first Oscar nomination for Les Miserables in 2012, while he helped get the implausibly not-half-bad boxing robots drama Real Steel to $229 million worldwide in 2011. He was among countless actors who were tricked or blackmailed into appearing in Movie 43 in early 2013, helped power the well-reviewed (and vastly superior to X-Men Origins: Wolverine) The Wolverine to a strong $414m worldwide on a $120m budget, and finished out 2013 with a superb star turn in Prisoners. He co-starred in Neil Blomkamp’s Chappie a couple weeks ago while he will headlined Warner Bros.’ Peter Pan prequel Pan later this summer. 2016 will see a co-starring role in the British ski-jumper drama Eddie the Eagle and a starring role in the Oscar-friendly P.T. Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman on Earth on 12/25/16. Said 2016 output may of course involve two more Logan cameos in X-Men: Age of Apocalypse and Deadpool. My point is not that all of these films were good or that all of them were hits.


Hugh Jackman parlayed his “star is born” moment into a long and diverse career with a variety of star vehicles because he became a star just before the so-called studio-programmer/star vehicle started to become an endangered species. He used his would-be star power to star in interesting films helmed by interesting directors. Obviously some of that was combination of his talent (I’m hard-pressed to name a genuinely bad performance), his genetics (he’s a ridiculously handsome white male), and his versatility (he is as well known today for his singing-and-dancing skills as for his adamantium claws). But talent and work ethic aside, he did luck out in a way that (as of today) Chris Evans and Henry Cavill did not. He was able to not just be “that guy from X-Men” but also the star of copious interesting mid-to-big budget studio multiplex releases. It’s not a total anomaly, as Chris Hemsworth still gets to make Rush and In the Heart of the Sea. But it’s enough of a rarity these days that I sigh in relative relief when Chris Pine signs for something like the 1950′s Coast Guard thriller The Finest Hours that isn’t an explicit franchise property.


The big-screen superheroes and franchise stars of today will be rich and famous, but it is likely that they will have to follow the Chris Evans/Scarlett Johansson path of indie film/franchise film with little in-between. Hugh Jackman came of age at just the right time and got the best of both worlds, which is why it’s such a shock that he’s apparently retiring his flagship character. He has been able to have a career that any actor would dream of while periodically playing the iconic character that made him a star in the first place and notching an easy box office win on his belt. He has been able to balance being Wolverine and being Hugh Jackman: Actor and Movie Star. Between July 14th, 2000 and March 4th, 2017, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will have outlasted three Spider-Men, three Hulks, two Batmen, two Supermen, two Catwomen, two Daredevils, two Punishers, two James Bonds, two Green Lanterns (presumably), and two entirely separate versions of the ensemble casts for Star Trek, X-Men, and Fantastic Four respectively. He has played Wolverine through an astonishing period of economic and artistic change in Hollywood and has used the role of Wolverine to fashion an eclectic filmography that is notable in today’s environment for not being heavily franchise-dependent.

Jackman’s choice to walk away may just be a matter of being just shy of 49-years old when the third Wolverine movie drops, or it may be a matter of having done all he wants to do with the character through four X-Men films and three stand-alone starring features. If this all comes to pass, then the relative success of Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Age of Apocalypse will be of paramount importance as it will be the second big test for how an X-Men franchise sans its flagship actor/character would fare. X-Men: First Class may be the best X-Men film thus far, but it is (adjusted for inflation) the lowest-grossing film of the series in worldwide grosses. If Age of Apocalypse underperforms (say, under $500m worldwide) for any reason, expect this whole conversation to change. That the notion of an X-Men franchise sans Wolverine or with a new actor in the iconic role is so difficult-to-discern is a testament to Jackman’s footprint in the part. If he is walking away, then he had a heck of run, both in terms of the performances and in terms of sticking it out in a reboot-happy universe. He may-well be among the last of his kind, an outta-nowhere movie star born of a franchise vehicle who turned that into a genuine career as an old school leading man. Give or take a periodic Channing Tatum, I’m not entirely sure anyone can make a career like that in mainstream Hollywood today.

I've always thought that the Wolverine role allowed Hugh to do artistic leveraging in his film career as well as a boost for his theatrical career. But maybe Hugh does want to take a different direction in his career now. We know he has always been interested in new challenges! And we can only wish him the best in this new direction!

I like the perception that THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH will provide Hugh another opportunity for Oscar glory

*Is it because of Fox's belief in the project that the film release has been positioned for key dates during the awards season ?

*Is it because this is a biopic of an iconic character in American culture? And biopics are notoriously lucky in getting Oscar nods

*Is it because he may get to portray someone who is physically very different from the Jackman persona ( and can allow him to hide flawlessly behind the character)? Somehow this reminds me of the kind of period film attractiveness that The Prestige carried, albeit of a very different nature.

*Is it because Hugh will be able to display his total versatility, maybe even more than Les Miserables did, because this movie musical will feature his triple-threat talent?


If he is not going to be doing any important filming after Eddie the Eagle, that would give him ( as producer and as lead actor) even more time to prepare the movie for filming!

Given the haste to recast the role, I wonder if there was more than meets the eye on the sudden announcement by Hugh of his eventual departure from the role.

If Wolverine 3 ( with Hugh still playing Wolverine) is not due for release till March 3, 2017, why the haste in recasting? Wouldn't it be awkward if another actor portrays Wolverine currently in a team movie or in a non-Wolverine solo while Hugh is still portraying the role in the final episode of the trilogy?

Personally I think this role is irreplaceable. Hugh has made Wolverine iconic. Never, ever, would I imagine Idris Elba in the part. However, IF they had to replace Hugh with someone younger, I think someone like Scott Eastwood might look the part. The only reason I say that is because Hugh always reminded me of Clint Eastwood as Wolverine and Scott reminds me of his father.

Production was set to start this summer but given the severity of Bale’s injury (sources say he tore his ACL, which requires a couple months to fully recover from), Fox is halting production until its star is healthy.

The delay also involved director James Mangold’s commitment to the next installment in Fox’s “Wolverine” franchise starring Hugh Jackman, which he was expected to shoot following “The Deep Blue Good-by.” Mangold will now focus on shooting “Wolverine 3″ with the intent of returning to the Travis McGee movie after wrapping Marvel’s superhero sequel.

The fate of Goodbye is unclear. While some say the project is dead, other sources believe the movie could be postponed rather than totally scrubbed. But if it is delayed, Fox might need to find a new star. Bale remains one of the most in-demand actors in the industry, with several projects scheduled for the next year. Teaming him with Mangold and the same players will not be easy. Mangold, who directed The Wolverine for Fox, also could end up on Wolverine 3 earlier than expected for the studio.

Unless all that James Mangold will do is to do more pre-production for WOLVERINE 3?

Variety and THR did not do more research. There is no way WOLVERINE 3 can start filming soon --

*Hugh is filming GREATEST SHOWMAN in September and that would likely last till the end of the year. Greatest Showman has also been announced for a December 25, 2016 playdate which seems like a very deliberate move to pitch this for the holidays ( it seems like family-entertainment type, on the surface) and catch the deadline for awards season! Also, it is possible that other actors may have already been contracted or already in talks for roles.

*Hugh will need time to prepare for the role physically and that takes a few months at least. James Mangold did indicate on Twitter that filming for WOLVERINE 3 will be in early 2016, presumably already an agreed date with Hugh?

After moving from superheroes (“Green Lantern”) to replicants (“Blade Runner 2”), Michael Green is returning to comic book movie territory to write “Wolverine” for 20th Century Fox, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

James Mangold is directing the sequel, which is expected to be Hugh Jackman‘s last time playing the clawed mutant. Green is currently working on the action-packed script with Mangold’s input.

Green recently worked with Fox, as he was brought on to revise Jack Paglen’s script for Scott’s sci-fi sequel “Prometheus 2.” He was also one of four writers credited on Ryan Reynolds‘ “Green Lantern” movie, and wrote the “Blade Runner” sequel with original writer Hampton Fancher, based on an idea by Fancher and producer Ridley Scott. Denis Villeneuve will direct the film, which will star Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling.


Mangold had planned to next direct Christian Bale as Travis McGee in Fox’s “The Deep Blue Goodbye,” but Bale recently tore his ACL and the film has been delayed. Mangold is now able to focus on “Wolverine,” which is slated to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.

Green, who got his start writing for “Smallville” and “Heroes,” previously wrote “Green Lantern” and a draft of “The Flash” for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, as well as WB’s epic Moses movie “Gods and Kings.” He’s represented by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment and Felker Toczek Gellman Suddleson.

Days of Future Past was showing here on cable - I must have caught the last third of the movie.

When it came to the end, when Wolverine wakes up and recognizes his former friends but in a different timeline ...and suggesting that the XMEN franchise will probably be facing a reboot and new storylines, I was a little choked when I realize that, apart from Wolverine 3, Hugh will no longer be part of any future team movies.

Sad, after all these years of anticipating every new XMEN movie with Hugh leading the credits.

I would like to see Hugh Jackman do Wolverine until he is 120 years old. I loved Hugh Jackman from the second I saw him in X-Men. I thought this guy is amazing. You have to remember we had 15 maybe 20 years of terrible Comic Book Movies before that. I was blown away with X-Men and Hugh Jackman was the star of the show and have loved him ever since.

Btw, Mark Millar identifies himself in his Twitter account as being a creative consultant for FOX. Was this why he seemed to have been observer to the filming of EDDIE THE EAGLE ( a Fox release)? Or was it his association with EDDIE producer Matthew Vaughn ( who directed Kingsman)?

It seems appropriate that the practically ageless Wolverine would be the one constant in Fox’s X-Men franchise. But after over a decade and more than half a dozen films, Hugh Jackman will be saying goodbye to the character in 2017 with the untitled Wolverine spinoff.

Details on the film have been kept under very tight wraps. But now a new rumor suggests Jackman will be able to give the character a nice sendoff by bringing him into the twilight of his life via the Old Man Logan storyline from the comics. Heroic Hollywood‘s El Mayimbe dropped the Wolverine 3 Old Man Logan rumor during a recent appearance on Popcorn Talk. (The Wolverine stuff begins around 39:15 if you’re curious.) He was careful to emphasize that nothing was official at this point. “It’s a rumor, not confirmed,” he said. “I’m still looking into it.”



As rumors go, though, this is a pretty intriguing one. Written by Mark Millar and drawn by Steve McNiven, the Old Man Logan arc ran for eight issues from 2008 to 2009. It unfolds in a dystopian future where supervillains run the world, and nearly all of the superheroes have been wiped out.

Logan has long since given up the Wolverine persona, following a traumatic event. Nowadays he leads a simpler life with his wife and kids. In need of money to pay his rent, he accepts a job helping the now-blind Hawkeye deliver a mysterious package across the country.

As much as we’re going to miss Jackman in the role, Old Man Logan could potentially be a great conclusion for him. It’d allow Jackman to bring the character to a natural endpoint, and could make use of the fact that Jackman himself has aged over that time even if his character barely has. Moreover, its futuristic setting would let Wolverine 3 stand on its own without getting too tangled up with Fox’s other Marvel movies.

However, Old Man Logan would require some major retooling on the way to the big screen. Though many of the X-Men appear in flashbacks, Wolverine and Emma Frost are among the only X-Men characters actually involved in the main storyline. Instead, the arc features a lot of Marvel characters that Fox doesn’t have the rights to, including Hawkeye, the Hulk, Mysterio, Kingpin, and Red Skull.

That said, the X-Men stable is huge. It wouldn’t be impossible for Fox to rewrite the story using only the X-Men and their associated characters. Especially considering Millar already serves as a consultant on Fox’s Marvel movies.

Do you like Old Man Logan as a potential storyline for the next Wolverine movie?
