Comments have been made about the facial hair that Hugh has been sporting, given that --

*The film is starting principal photography (aka filming) today, March 2, 2016.

*Hugh has already tweeted that he has been in MAKEUP - presumably they have already been assessing the various styling options for the Wolverine look, before actual filming.


What to make of this ?


*Maybe there is a part of filming based on the storyline where Logan/Wolverine is sporting the full facial hair growth...and this will be shot first?

*Unless they decided to put on the neat mutton-chops look for Logan on the day they start filming?

*Earlier, there was a report ( check out one of the above threads) that some exclusive scenes from the forthcoming Wolverine movie were shown in a special event highlighting 2016 FOX releases...and that of WOLVERINE UNTITLED which will be released in 2017. Maybe they have already shot some exclusive scenes for publicity purposes and maybe the scenes show Logan/Wolverine with full and greying facial hair, instead of his neat mutton chops ?

But Hugh Jackman, 47, seems to be attempting to distance himself from the rugged X-Men character, as he posted a selfie to Instagram with a significantly trimmed and tidier beard.

The actor captioned the photo: 'Giving new meaning to "it takes a village." With the awesome Renya. Liz is nearby too!'





The Sydney-born actor obviously decided it was time for a trim and enlisted the help of hair stylist Renya Xydis, who is also pictured in the selfie.

Renya is the owner and creative director of various hairstyling salons across Sydney, and her skills were clearly put to good use on Hugh's unkempt beard.


The star has been sporting a very bushy salt-and-pepper beard recently, after being in holiday mode for the past couple of weeks.

Hugh is rarely seen without his well-crafted stubble and sometimes opts for a more rugged mutton chop look when playing Wolverine.

But he had been growing his beard in the more traditional way, embracing his naturally graying facial hair.

The Aussie hunk, who is married to actress Deborra-Lee Furness, is gearing up to film the third and final Wolverine film, which is directed by James Mangold and scheduled for a 2017 release.

There has not been much information on the screenplay, on the characters, on the casting to-date!

The only glimpse we have had is presumably (one of) the look(s) of Wolverine, via Hugh's tweet/Instagram. In the past, we know that Hugh has shared advance photos of images from coming projects ( the emaciated look of Valjean, the mullet in Chappie, the bald look of Blackbeard, the growing hair in time for The River, etc.)...so, it is likely he has again showed us a glimpse of the new Wolverine image.

On the SuperheroHype forum, a poster keen to know about details on WOLVERINE 3 is assuming this --

I still think things are going to be hush hush on this until Apocalypse comes out. We really know nothing about characters, casting, story etc and I think a big part of it is what we are gonna see in Apocalypse and how it ties in to the future and this movie. I wouldn't even be surprised if there's a post credits scene in apocalypse. I reckon once the movie is out we will learn more about the project. Guaranteed.

Although I have my own guess on what the theme and plot development of the movie might be -- just a hunch, of course

The cast of the third – and if Hugh Jackman sticks to what he's been saying – finale Wolverine film with the Logan we've come to know is boosting its cast. ER veteran Eriq La Salle is aboard in a mystery role.

Almost all the roles in the new movie (which has James Mangold directing again, this time from a script by David James Kelly) are a mystery at this point as 20th Century Fox is in secure lockdown mode on what the story will actually be. Rumours have pegged a futuristic Old Man Logan inspiration and we know that Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant and Stephen Merchant (who posted an Instagram video of him getting his hair shaved off for his role shortly after word of his casting broke) are already in the ensemble. Grant will be a mad scientist, Holbrook the tough nut security chief of a big corporation who is Wolverine's main antagonist and Merchant... Well, he's still much more of a mysterious character. And then there's Patrick Stewart, returning to the role of the older Charles Xavier.

La Salle, who is still best known for his role on the long-running medical drama, has appeared in number of movies and TV shows since then, but has also carved out a successful career directing too. Wolverine 3, or whatever its final title turns out to be, will arrive here on March 2 next year.

It looks like these are all character roles to-date.

No announcement yet on any female roles ( leads or key supporting roles).

No official announcement on Patrick Stewart's involvement!

Yes, another character being kept under wraps - but at least it's a female role this time. Elise Neal (Hollywood Divas) will also join Hugh Jackman in James Mangold's follow up to The Wolverine.





This is starting to feel very familiar. Variety reports that Elise Neal (The Hughleys) has joined the cast of The Wolverine 3, but offer no other information at all. Last night it was the exact same situation with former ER actor Eriq La Salle, and despite a few hints here and there, it's been the same for the rest of the cast, too.

It's clear that Mangold and co. are adamant that no story or character details leak, but it's difficult to recall this much secrecy surrounding casting on a comic book movie before this.

Anyway, we should find out more over the next couple of weeks as the movie is expected to head into production pretty soon.

The Wolverine 3 stars Hugh Jackman, along with Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, and Stephen Merchant. Patrick Stewart will also return as Charles Xavier. The movie is set for release on March 3, 2017.

Fanboys hate it when they cannot outguess what's in store, especially because they think they are comic-book experts


I have a feeling that these are just the secondary characters...and that eventually there will be a " grand reveal" of the major cast, hopefully ... Maybe this is the marketing hype that they are developing?


LOL - hope it has nothing to do with the budget they have been given to work with! Presumably, it would be at least in line with, or more than, the production budget for THE WOLVERINE ( $ 120 million).

I picked up from some of the boards that there is a rumor ( not confirmed!) that there will be two major female leads!

Hugh and James Mangold have been very tight-lipped about the film project. Hopefully, they will share some stuff before the fanboys become more negative or at the very least indifferent about the announced casting so far. There are too many competing comic book movies and one has to sustain interest in a particular project to ensure that the anticipation level remains high!

A photo from the set would be nice! One with Hugh and Patrick Stewart would be tremendous!

The' X-Men' star should hang up his claws


“Prisoners,” the new Warner Bros. thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, is a movie that Alfred Hitchcock would have made if he were channeling David Fincher. Director Denis Villeneueve casts Jackman as a dad overcome with grief when his daughter vanishes one Thanksgiving afternoon. “Prisoners” is full of surprises, which shouldn’t be spoiled, other to say that it earned raves when it debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in August. As Variety’s chief film critic Scott Foundas wrote at the time: “Jackman has never been better.” (The full review is available here.)

You could argue that Jackman, at the age of 44, is in the midst of a career resurgence. On the first day of filming “Prisoners” last December, he clinched his first Oscar nomination ever—for playing Jean Valjean in the Universal Studios adaptation of “Les Miserables,” which grossed $442 million globally. There’s just one problem: the two performances were interrupted by Wolverine, Jackman’s alter-ego on the big screen with treacherous claws.

In July, Fox’s “The Wolverine,” the sequel to 2009’s “X-Men Origins Wolverine,” which itself was the spinoff from 2000’s “X-Men,” opened to a disappointing $55 million. This was the sixth time Jackman had played Wolverine, and the latest film only grossed $130 million domestically, down 28 percent from the 2009 pic that made $180 million at the U.S. box office. Despite audience fatigue, the studio later announced that Jackman will be reprising Wolverine in the time-travelling “X-Men Days of Future Past” directed by Bryan Singer and scheduled for 2014. All of which leads to a bigger question: Is Wolverine now a liability for Hugh Jackman’s career?



Many actors (see Robert Downey Jr. or Natalie Portman) transition seamlessly from serious fare to summer blockbusters. But Wolverine has been both a blessing and curse for Jackman. The Marvel comic book character was the role that put the unknown Australian actor on the map in the first Singer “X-Men” pic, but it also typecast him.

Jackman has worked assiduously to break out of the mold. He dabbled in romantic comedy (2001’s “Someone Like You” and “Kate & Leopold”), more action (2004’s “Van Helsing”), a Woody Allen film (2006’s “Scoop”) and an epic romance that tried to be “Gone With The Wind” but failed (2008’s “Australia”). None of these movies really worked. Audiences didn’t pay much attention to his good turns in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Fountain” or Christopher Nolan’s “The Prestige” either, although younger boys rightfully embraced 2011’s “Real Steel” about fighting robots. Now that he’s regained new career momentum, returning to Wolverine is only going to make us forget his range.

To give a sense of how much time Jackman has spent under all that hair, when the upcoming “X-Men” movie opens next year, it will be his seventh appearance as Wolverine (including a cameo in 2011’s “X-Men: First Class”) over 15 years. That’s longer than the decade Daniel Radcliffe spent playing Harry Potter. Christian Bale committed to three “Batman” movies for Warner Bros., and Tobey Maguire only donned “Spider-Man’s” tights three times for Sony. Both these actors were entities in Hollywood before they started playing comic book heroes. Unlike Batman or Superman, Wolverine just isn’t that deep. Jackman has already explored all the various depths — and more — with the character.

Ironically, the one role that allowed Jackman to escape the most from the X-Men world was his 2004 Broadway turn as the gay crooner Peter Allen in “The Boy From Oz.” It’s the only performance that earned him a fervent fan base that rivaled his Comic-Con groupies. The self-described “Ozalots,” mostly women between the ages of 30 and 60, practically took out second mortgages on their homes to binge-purchase orchestra seats, returning to the theater dozens of times to be near Hugh. That’s the kind of excitement Jackman can generate with the right character, but he hasn’t had the opportunity to do that often enough at the movies.

It also doesn’t help that every time Jackman promotes a different film, interviewers ask the same questions about Wolverine. That happened this week on “The View,” when the gabbers showcased his ripped torso and Sherri Shepherd fondled his pecs. Half the headlines generated by the “Prisoners” press tour are somehow related to Wolverine, which must be annoying for Warner Bros. Even Jackman has said he’s not sure how much longer he can keep up the act. It’s time to retire those claws.

I am also going to post the comments to this article, which are generally NOT supportive of the author's view.

The decision to leave the role is left to Hugh - when and how are what he will try to pinpoint. WOLVERINE 3, it seems, is the means that Hugh has chosen to say farewell to his iconic role. It occurs after 17 years since he first put on the adamantium claws!

Note: There is a mention of the Ozalots here. Does anyone remember if the author was the same one who wrote about the Ozalots when he was still with Newsweek?
