Eddie the Eagle is taking flight again.

The most unlikely Olympic ski jumping hero is now the subject of an upcoming film, Eddie the Eagle (in theaters Feb. 26), starring Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton.

The underdog tale is based on Michael Edwards' incredible leap to universal fame as "Eddie the Eagle," the plasterer who became Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper. The beloved loser with the signature thick glasses finished last in the 70-meter and 90-meter jumps at the 1988 Calgary Olympics, but captured hearts around the world.

“Eddie the Eagle is a folk hero,” says Jackman, 47, who recalls watching Edwards' efforts on TV in his native Australia. “He’s British, but Eddie embodies that quintessential have-a-go quality that Aussies love. He really just went for it as the whole world watched.”

Directed by Dexter Fletcher, Eagle follows Edwards’ improbable path to the Games — dealing with everything from novice skills in the dangerous sport to secondhand equipment that included a helmet with string chin strap.

He was initially unpopular with some of his fellow jumpers and the British Ski Federation tried to blackball him for lack of seriousness. But Edwards persevered and his amateur joy led to thousands of enthusiastic fans chanting his name during his Olympic jumps.

Jackman, who plays a rebellious ski coach who takes Edwards under his wing, says he was even more impressed with the novice's feat after shooting scenes atop Olympic ski jumps. He saw up close just how dangerous the sport could be.

“I am not scared of heights at all. But I was scared up there,” says Jackman. “That jump is so steep and it's pure ice."

In the film version, Jackman says the true star is Welsh actor Egerton, 26, who radically transforms to play Edwards after starring as a handsome and fit spy alongside Colin Firth in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Jackman was shocked to see a very different Egerton on the first day of shooting.







“My jaw was on the ground,” says Jackman. “There was a photo of Taron next to the real Eddie the Eagle in the makeup trailer and I would stare at it going, 'Which one is Taron?' It was phenomenal.”

Egerton says he stepped away from his rigorous Kingsman training (a sequel is in the works) to capture Edwards’ chunkier build, and the actor declined to use face prosthetics.

“I wanted to do it myself,” says Egerton. “So I kind of affect an underbite and let those brilliant glasses do a lot of the work.”

The true Eddie the Eagle was a frequent set visitor during filming, which Egerton says follows “the spirit” of the Olympic quest — even with significant liberties that include Jackman's character. (Edwards couldn't afford a coach.)

Egerton watched the final film with Edwards, and says the subject became "quite emotional" at the end. Jackman calls it a mix of the Jamaican Bobsled Team story Cool Runnings and the coal-country dance tale Billy Elliot.

“Every kid should see this movie, because it reminds people that you don’t have to win to be a winner," says Jackman. "Eddie the Eagle might not have ended up on the medal podium, but he was victorious. It’s a story of a man who had a dream, and nothing was going to stop him. “

I attended this event. One of the tweets is mine. And yes, Jackman fakes an orgasm again. (See also SWORDFISH. )

This movie got huge cheers from the audience, more than any of the other 10 (mostly genre and vintage) films shown.

I also remember vividly Eddie competing at Calgary. The movie captured what I remember about it, tho the film's backstory is mostly fictional.

Sorry if I'm not being clear. BNAT ran over 24 hours and I haven't had much sleep yet!

I wonder if the UK will not advance their current release date of April 1 to coincide with that of the USA (February 26)? Shouldn't the world premiere occur in the country where he became a folk hero and whose flag he represented in the Winter Olympics?

I was vaguely aware of the story of EDDIE THE EAGLE, Britain’s first ski jumper in over 60 years, but was unaware that a film starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman was even in the works. Turns out Dexter Fletcher has directed a genuine crowdpleaser here, because EDDIE THE EAGLE is a terrific movie about how one terrible athlete became an Olympic hero. We’ve all seen movies like this before; the unsung hero triumphing over adversity has been a staple of cinema since the beginning. But EDDIE THE EAGLE is so full of whimsy, charm, and humor that it overcomes those clichés to become truly effective and winning. It helps that Taron Egerton is so terrific as Eddie Edwards, and that Hugh Jackman turns in one of the coolest performances of his career as Edwards’ reluctant, drunken coach Bronson Peary. There’s a wonderful DIRTY DANCING kind of moment between Egerton and Jackman that had the BNAT audience swooning (guys included). I’ll happily see EDDIE THE EAGLE again when it opens in April. Taron Egerton won over this audience last year with KINGSMAN, and he was kind enough to come for this film and watch it with us. You could hear his laughter mixed in with ours as we experienced the film, and that BNAT memory will go logged in as a favorite.

Taron and Hugh are really dancing in the movie? Hmmm....didn't Taron give a copy of his video doing some singing when Hugh was still in THE RIVER and looking out for some talent for GREATEST SHOWMAN? I wonder if Zac Efron is part of that cast now?

I am not surprised that Taron can sing -- he is Welsh!!!

Also, didn't Dexter Fletcher want Hugh and Taron to do a music video to help publicize EDDIE THE EAGLE?

MOVIE #4: Eddie the Eagle

Our first premiere was a film called Eddie the Eagle, produced by Matthew Vaughn and starring Kingsman's Taron Egerton as a real life British Olympian named Eddie Edwards.

Afterwards I saw Devin Faraci tweet that the beauty of this film was that it's a sports movie about a guy who kinda stinks at sports and I don't think I could put it better than that. This film is Rudy if Rudy wasn't just too small, but also really kinda sucked at football.

Eddie is a dork and I mean that with affection. He's a bit of a doofus, kinda scrawny, totally socially awkward, but his super power is his eternal optimism. We see him as a kid and his many attempts to train himself to be an Olympian. The movie with him opens in the bathtub, holding his breath. He almost hits 1 minute, so in his mind that means he's ready to go to the Olympics.

He's got the drive, the heart, but that's about it. Turns out his calling is Ski Jumping. Again, not because he's good at it, but because nobody seems to give a shit about it in the UK, so literally the only thing he has to do to qualify is make one jump and sign up.

Hugh Jackman shows up as a drunk American who was a ski jumping superstar before letting ego and partying kill his career prematurely. And he's going full bore in this one, really playing up his rogue-ish charm.

This unlikely duo is the heart at the center of this absolutely charming feel-good audience-pleaser and I can't recommend it enough.

The flick isn't released until April, but make a point to see it. You won't be disappointed.

Not sure if it is simply the trailer or if they have seen an early screening but a number of film sites are very positive in recommending the theme and spirit of this semi-biopic! Among them is this thoughtful feature from Cinemablend --

While the trailer basically runs you through the entire story from start to finish, the plot is not the focus here. While 1988 was long enough ago that many moviegoers were born years after the events of the film, the movie is obviously looking to attract an audience with the emotional resonance of the story. Much like Eddie "The Eagle’s" own drive to compete. It’s not about the result, it’s about being there. Sports is a popular focus for movies for exactly this reason. The cinderella story that can be created is something that appeals to a wide variety of movie fans. This story is no different. The fact that it really happens just helps make it all hit home that much more..
