Eddie! Come on! #TheEagle

Hugh's own hashtag is his way of officially confirming that he is going to be in the film project. ( See Film Role Rumors for much of the speculations on the project).

In a previous chat, Hugh was quoted as saying that at that time , his favorite sports would be SKIING. The movie is about ski jumping - although I suspect that would be more of the background to the human story. A previous article also mentions that there will lots of comedy in it.

I wonder how this will mesh with any filming commitments for APOCALYPSE? Although there is no confirmation yet that Wolverine will be part of that next episode in the saga of the XMEN,

There are some news stories that simply make you stop and say, “wait… WHAT?” The idea of Hugh Jackman appearing in a film about Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards is one of those. But it’s apparently true, with Kingsman: The Secret Service’s Taron Egerton reportedly set to strap the skis on to star as possibly the most famous wannabe Olympian of the 1980s.

This comes from Baz Bamigboye, not a man known for making such things up, even as we needed eyebrow surgery to correct the arch that appeared. And the idea of an Eddie The Eagle film has been in the works for years – the last time we heard anything of it, Father Ted’s Declan Lowney was attached to direct and Steve Coogan was on to play Eddie. Now, though, it appears they’re pitching the role younger, and Dexter Fletcher will be calling the shots.

Edwards, in case the name doesn’t ring any Ski Sunday-appropriate cowbells, was the first person ever to represent the UK at the ski jump, at the Olympics in Calgary in 1988. Ranked 55th in the world, Edwards was completely self-funded (he worked as a plasterer to make ends meet) and was the sole applicant to represent Blighty. Once there, his weight (nine pounds more than the next contestant), lack of financial support, long-sightedness (which required him to wear glasses that frequently fogged during the competition) and fear of heights rather affected his medal chances, and he finished last om both his events. Still, his good spirits and can-do attitude won him fans around the world, leading to a brief pop career and, now, this biopic.

Assuming he’s definitely aboard, Jackman would be Chuck Berghorn, a ski expert who helped him train, with Timothy Spall wanted for another key role, that of Eddie's dad. It’s supposed to be kicking off shooting in the spring, so we’ll see the Eagle can soar into cinemas at last.

Maybe it is the human interest story which attracted Hugh to the project?

Taron Egerton stars in KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE next month but the young up-and-coming actor has already lined up another impressive role. He’s landed the lead in Dexter Fletcher’s next movie starring opposite Hugh Jackman. The film doesn't have a title but will tell the story of Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards (played by Egerton) and his journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Will they call it FLY LIKE AN EAGLE? For the sake of a sweet soundtrack, let's hope so!*

Egerton apparently beat several other up-and-coming actors for the role of Edwards after a screen-test with Jackman. Edwards, after failing to qualify for the 1984 Games, moved to Lake Placid so that he could train for the next time around. He’s a little short on the funds needed to pursue his dream of competing as a downhill skier. There were no other British athletes vying for a spot in the ski jumping category, so Edwards switched to that instead, and that’s where Jackman’s character comes in to play Chuck Berghorn, the mentor who helped Edwards overcome a number of issues including his financial troubles to qualify for the 1988 Games.

The story is quite interesting, and there really isn’t an easy way to talk about it without spoilers. Then again, I wouldn’t say talking about a true life event should count as a spoiler for any movie (see: UNBROKEN and RUDY, because sure). The information is on Wiki or in a book, so if you want to go in to this movie fresh I guess you could avoid learning about it.

The story goes that even though Edwards made it to the Olympics, he came in last place in the 70m and 90m ski jumping events. He was still hailed a hero, and the worse he performed, the more popular he became. Now that should make for a different kind of sports movie. Remember COOL RUNNINGS? I hope they have a lot of fun with this like that movie did with its material. Also, the next Winter Olympics is in 2018, making the marketing for this movie a no brainer.

Taron, you won a musical theatre competition at drama school. Any thoughts of pursuing that career trajectory on screen?

TE: I have never worked professionally in musical theatre but I love to sing, I always have. I would love to do a musical at some point.


That segues neatly into my next question ... I understand you are about to start work with Hugh Jackman on a biopic about Olympic skier Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards.

TE: There’s no singing in it, but I met him in December and I told him I was about to do some Christmas carolling (back home in Wales). He asked me to send a video, which I did, of me and my friends at a pub doing some organised carol-singing.


Can you ski?

TE: I am learning at the moment. This is never going to translate well in text ... but I really enjoyed it and bizarrely, since I am the least physical person on the planet and I normally take to things like Bambi to the ice, I think it went quite well. I am really looking forward to learning more. There are going to be some great ski jumping scenes in that film...

Of course Taron can sing - he's from Wales

I wonder why Hugh asked for a video of Taron singing? Could be he thinking of considering him for a role in GREATEST SHOWMAN, knowing that he has some academic background on musical theatre?

This is even more intriguing --

Egerton got his start performing in youth theater in his native Wales at Aberystwyth Arts Centre before enrolling in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, or RADA. A singer as well as an actor, at 21, he won the 2011 Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year award.

I don't think they give a Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer award unless it is for musical theatre. I may be wrong, but I don't ever remember Sondheim writing a straight play.

And to do it at the very prestigious RADA!

Hmmm... maybe Hugh's interest in Taron's singing ability has professional implications? Greatest Showman part??

BERLIN– German powerhouse Studio Babelsberg showed off its Hollywood connection at the Variety-sponsored party it threw in honor of Werner Herzog’s “Queen of the Desert,” which is competing in Berlin...





Woebcken, who attended with Babelsberg COO Christoph Fisser, also spoke about the tight bond between Babelsberg and the Berlin Film Festival.

“Berlinale has grown over the years, as we have, and the festival has become very important to us because it’s a platform for new projects, not only for projects that are completed,” pointed out Woebcken.

‘It’s a nice coincidence that we are in the same town and things come together nicely — like last year, we had the opening film at the Berlinale, Wes Anderson’s ‘Grand Budapest Hotel,’ and it’s a movie we were highly involved in.”

Woebcken said he felt optimistic about this year’s prospects, as he expects it to busier than 2014, which turned out to be shaky due to two productions that didn’t make it to the studio.

Babelsberg is now in discussions to host a number of upscale English-language productions.

One of the high-profie shoots already lined up for 2015 is “Eddie the Eagle,” a U.K. sports comedy with Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton, which will start lensing at Babelsberg at the end of March.

Babelsberg has thrived as it established itself as a leading European studio, facing up to such rival studios as Pinewood in the U.K. A key to that success, Woebcken argues, is that Babelsberg has shown its skills and craftsmanship in handling arthouse-oriented, medium-sized films, notably historical dramas.

So, filming will be in Germany, to start by end-March.

Super producer Matthew Vaughn is segueing neatly from his recent action spy spoof, Kingsman: The Secret Service, to a film about underdog ski-jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards.

The feature is currently in pre-production, with a view to principal photography in Germany and the UK in the spring. Exact shoot dates and studio details can be found on Production Intelligence, along with crucial hires such as the production designer, casting director and production manager.

Dexter Fletcher directs Eddie the Eagle, which many believe is an unlikely project for Vaughn until you see who he’s got lined up to star: Kingsman boy wonder Taron Egerton will play the bespectacled sportsman and Hugh Jackman portrays his mentor Chuck Berghorn.

It all suddenly seems like a great A-lister project, and different from Vaughn’s usual canon of work. It’s also a rare scheduling window of opportunity for Jackman, who has several major projects lined up including the small matter of X-Men: Apocalypse. He is also producing and starring in much-anticipated feature, The Greatest Showman on Earth, about the legendary P.T Barnum.

LAKE PLACID - Chuck Berghorn recently discovered a movie is in the works about parts of his life, and that Hollywood star Hugh Jackman is the actor picked to play him.

The film, if completed, would portray the life of Michael "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards, the first-ever British Olympic ski jumper who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It is currently in pre-production and is set to star British actor Taron Egerton as Edwards and Australian actor Jackman as Berghorn, according to news reports.

But Berghorn, 66, a former ski jumper from Lake Placid, said neither the filmmakers nor the actors have contacted him about the film. He heard the news from a neighbor.

"My neighbor texted me, and she said, 'Hey Hugh Jackman,'" Berghorn said. "I didn't know who Hugh Jackman was or is. I said, 'I'm sorry, you must have texted the wrong person,' and then she told me. ... It's funny that, like, a really good, accomplished actor is being me."

Berghorn said he wishes someone from the movie would contact him about the film because he is uncertain about the direction it will take and if he will be portrayed in a historically correct way or a Hollywood version of reality.

It's unclear whether any of the film will be shot in Lake Placid where Berghorn helped train Edwards at the Olympic Jumping Complex. state Olympic Regional Development Authority spokesman Jon Lundin said filmmakers have not contacted them.

Berghorn doesn't consider himself an expert ski jumping coach. He's better remembered for his expertise in maintaining the ski jumping hills. He currently works in construction and maintenance at the Mirror Lake Inn, but he was working at the ski jumping complex when he met Edwards.

Berghorn vaguely remembers the period of time when he trained Edwards.

"I do remember him coming out to the ski jumps and wanting to learn how to jump," Berghorn said. "He wasn't very good, and because of his age, you couldn't really teach him anything. He was set in his ways to alpine skiing, and alpine skiing is completely different to ski jumping."

Within a month, Edwards was jumping from the 70-meter hill, Berghorn said.

Jay Rand, the New York Ski Educational Foundation's executive director and Berghorn's friend from childhood - and also a 1968 Olympic ski jumper - also remembers that day in the 1980s when a British man showed up at the ski jumps.

"I was in the garage, where the snow cat was housed, and this guy walks in, kind of an odd-looking fellow with thick glasses, a British accent, not in the best of shape really," Rand said.

Rand said Edwards presented him with a business card that said "professional stunt man and ski racer." He wasn't either of those things, Rand said.

"We all kind of took him under our wing," Rand said. "John Viscome and Chuck particularly worked with him, and that's how he got his start."

Berghorn said he considers himself Edwards' part-time coach. Berghorn said Viscome was Edwards' full-time coach while in Lake Placid. Viscome, who died in 1998, was the well-known coach of the Lake Placid Ski Club, teaching many children in the 1960s, including Berghorn and Rand.

Despite the local coaching, Edwards would not turn out to be a successful Olympian. Edwards finished last in the ski jumping event at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary; however, he was recognized for his personality and became semi-famous in the process.

"It's funny because all the international top jumpers and officials were upset, as I recall, because he was getting more publicity than the top jumpers," Rand said. "So following that they put in some criteria to make it a little more difficult to get into an Olympics."

Edwards appears to still be craving the spotlight. The BBC reports that Edwards lent producers of the film a pair of his old skis and even offered to be a stunt man in the movie because "they expressed a problem with finding ski jumpers who could jump in the old 'classic' style (with skis parallel) because for the last 25 years everybody's been jumping in the new 'V' style."

Berghorn said that's the kind of guy he remembers.

"Eddie had a lot of guts," he said, "an awful lot of guts."

LAKE PLACID - The media got it wrong. Hollywood star Hugh Jackman will play a fictional ski jumping coach, not Lake Placid's Chuck Berghorn, in a film about the life of Olympic ski jumper Michael "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards.

The movie, titled "Eddie the Eagle," won't be filmed in Lake Placid, where Berghorn and others first taught Edwards how to ski jump in the 1980s.

Filming of the movie is expected to begin next month in Germany. British actor Taron Egerton was cast to portray Edwards, Britian's first-ever ski jumper, during the run-up to the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. According to several news reports, including England's Daily Mail, Jackman was cast to play Berghorn. But that was wrong, according to the film's screenwriter, who reached out to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise this week.


Screenwriter Sean Macaulay said Jackman will play a fictional U.S. ski jumping coach inspired by some of the U.S. coaches who taught Edwards. Macaulay said the false information about Berghorn, 65, was assumed incorrectly by Daily Mail gossip columnist Baz Bamigboye, who broke the news about the casting, and then it spread throughout the Internet. The information was shared by many media organizations, including the Enterprise.

"Jackman is indeed playing a coach," Macaulay said, "but he's a fictional character called Bronson Peary."

Two Lake Placid coaches were known to have trained Edwards while he was here: Berghorn and John Viscome. The film, however, will focus on the training Edwards received while in Europe before the Olympics, although in real life no U.S. coach trained Edwards in Europe, Macaulay said.

Berghorn, who was shocked when he first heard Jackman would play him in a film, said he was relieved the coach would be a fictional character.

"I was worried if they were going to use my name," Berghorn said.

He wasn't upset, either.

"It's no big deal one way or the other," Berghorn said. "It just doesn't matter. Yeah, I would've liked to have had my name up in lights, more or less, but if I don't, I don't. That will just be the way the ball bounces."

Edwards went on to become one of the most famous athletes of the 1988 Winter Olympics, although he came in last during both ski jumping events. In Britian, he is seen as an everyman who fearlessly pursued his dreams.

"He was a national hero," Macaulay said. "Even now, he can turn up to cut a ribbon and give a motivational speech, and he is a rock star. He is like your mad uncle, a part of the family. They love him."

Macaulay, a British-born screenwriter and journalist who lives in Los Angeles, described the movie as a humorous biography that will show how Edwards failed with style. "Cool Runnings," a 1993 film about a group of underdog Jamaican Olympic bobsledders, was "definitely an inspiration" for "Eddie the Eagle," he said.

"It's definitely not downbeat, kitchen-sink realism," he said. "It's not silly, throwaway comedy. It's true to the spirit of his adventure."

Macaulay described Jackman's character as "a hard-nosed purist about skiing" and "a former golden-boy skier and a burnout" who sees Edwards' attempt as "his way back to redemption."

Berghorn said he will definitely watch the film and is curious to see Jackman play the role of coach.

Fellow Lake Placid resident Jay Rand, a 1968 Olympic ski jumper and longtime friend of Berghorn, said the turn of events isn't so unfortunate.

"On the bright side," Rand said, "everybody knows who Chuck is now."

This is more like it -- why the role appealed to Hugh!

I wonder if it is just prepping for the movie that they are doing? Maybe they want to take advantage of some heavy snowfall in Europe now, as this movie is supposed to be Europe-based, and do some early principal photography? I was lucky to have been to one ski resort in Europe ( not to ski - no athlete here , but just to get a feel of how a ski resort might look like), the Cortina d'Ampezzo ( I think I got that right ) in the fascinating Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy -- and it is the surrounding areas ( very picturesque in the way Europe can be) which impressed me as well as seeing the snow coming down as we kept warm in a lounge.

Hugh will probably enjoy making this movie as he has said that skiing is one of his favorite sports now.

Is he talking of only pre-production or will they segue into principal photography ( actual filming) right after? Hugh is supposed to attend the Feb 27 premiere of CHAPPIE in Berlin. Is he expected to start filming immediately? Maybe part of the reason is to catch the snow, as the movie's focus is on ski-jumping?

Britain's most famous ski jumper Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards may perform the stunts in a movie about his life.

The 1988 Winter Olympics star confirmed the biopic was in production.

Edwards, who lives in Gloucestershire, has lent his old ski jumping gear to producers and said he had offered to help because nobody jumps in the old "classic" style any more.

It has been reported Welsh actor Taron Egerton will portray Eddie in the film. Hugh Jackman will play his mentor.

The 51-year-old ski jumper, whose real name is Michael Edwards, became world famous upon finishing a distant last at the Calgary Olympics of 1988.

A movie about his life has been talked about for several years. Previously both Steve Coogan and Rupert Grint were reported to be lined up to play him.

'Olympic uniform'

"When the latest reports [about the film going ahead] first came out, I took it with a huge pinch of salt because this has been mentioned in the papers for the last 20 years and nothing's ever come of it," said Edwards.

"But now it looks like something's actually happening."

He said he had met producers last month and has since met with set designers and costume designers to discuss the film.

"They've taken my Olympic uniform to be replicated for the movie," he said.

"It'll be fun. I'm a little bit excited, but I'll only believe it when it actually happens and they begin filming."

Edwards, who lives in the Stroud Valleys, said he had not yet seen a script but had been told Jackman would be playing his mentor.

He said the ski-jumping parts of the movie would begin filming in February.

'Brave enough'

"I met with Dexter [Fletcher], who's one of the producers, before Christmas and they expressed a problem with finding ski jumpers who could jump in the old "classic" style [with skis parallel] because for the last 25 years everybody's been jumping in the new "V" style.

"You can still jump on the skis, and with the bindings - it's just they'll have difficulty finding somebody who'll be brave enough to jump with the old equipment."

So, it is likely that the outside scenes will be filmed now.
