*There is mention that there are elements of panto(mime) like in the English tradition at Christmastime, although Hugh's Blackbeard has a more sinister vibe, like The Childcatcher.

*I do remember The Childcatcher from CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG - both in the movie and the stage musical version. What a coincidence that some have commented how his Blackbeard is faintly reminiscent of Richard O' Brien in the stage version. Hugh himself says that the scene in PAN showing the kids being snatched upwards by the pirates is reminiscent of The Childcatcher's evil ways

*Sequels, anyone? Not just for PAN but his number one critic, Oscar, thinks he should do one for REAL STEEL and FLUSHED AWAY.

NEW YORK – For father bragging rights, Hugh Jackman’s two children have quite a selection menu.

Oscar and Ava could pick dad’s seven Wolverine portrayals plus two more in his future with X-Men: Apocalypse in theatres next year and another Wolverine spinoff set for a 2017 release. They could choose his best actor Oscar nomination for his Jean Valjean part in Les Misérables.

Or they could single out the fact that Jackman’s name shows up on a “cool” short list to play James Bond every five years or so, and has again this year.

Those are just a few of highlights that Oscar and Ava could mention but never do. And then dad landed the role of Blackbeard the pirate in the Peter Pan prequel Pan.

“My kids loved it and they are brutally honest,” said Jackman promoting the film recently. “They said, ‘We actually like this one.’ And I thought, ‘What are you saying?'”

The origins movie, directed by Joe Wright from a Jason Fuchs script, is initially set in London during WWII. Peter (played by newcomer Levi Miller) is an orphan hoping for his mother’s return. Instead, he’s abducted one night by Blackbeard’s pirates who eventually force him to work the mines of Neverland.

When Peter escapes with the conniving James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), the 11-year-old embarks on a journey to find his mother with Hook and warrior princess Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) by his side. Only Blackbeard and his henchmen stand in the way.

The narrative may be new but the cast of characters and the fantasy spirit follow J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan play and book. (Even Blackbeard gets a mention as Hook’s captain in the original Barrie material).

“I’ve always wanted a role in this swashbuckling pirates world,” Jackman said.

At first, the Australian thought that the Blackbeard portrayal should exploit some of the historical references. Wright explained early on he was thinking more of “a wig of Marie Antoinette and the costume of Louis XIV.”


The flamboyant route won out for a few reasons. Wright had decided on his lavish vision in pre-production and he figured the ostentatious presentation would assist the actor’s emoting. He was right.

“I felt 80% of my work had been done by the over-the-top costumes, ruffles, feathers and wigs,” noted Jackman. “(Blackbeard) is a show pony, and it brought out the ham in me, which is not too far below the surface.”

The actor even agreed to a dresser during the London shoot, which he usually passes on. “Every film you have a dresser, but I said, ‘I think we’re going to need an extra person’.”

In keeping with the exuberance, Jackman as Blackbeard even gets to sing a winking version of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit during one sequence; although he admitted to over-selling his vocals at the recording session.

As he recalled, the producer at the studio told him: “‘ Fantastic – but it’s a little bit too Broadway.'” The Tony winner for The Boy From Oz attempted a more unassuming vocal rendition, which made it into the movie.

However, Pan isn’t a musical, Jackman said. Yet he hoped the latest rendition contains the vitality and energy of the Barrie fairy tale.

“I think Joe found the right tone for a movie like this which is enthusiastic and open and is larger than life,” he said.

That’s what he wants for his more serious Wolverine performance in the untitled superhero spin-off which is in the early stages of pre-production.

In it, Jackman hinted that a return by Patrick Stewart’s Professor X means that there will be a quasi-father-son subtext to the action.

In the meantime, Jackman wrapped his role in the drama Eddie the Eagle which arrives in theatres next spring and he is preparing for his P. T. Barnum portrayal in the musical biopic called The Greatest Showman on Earth.

If the upcoming roles can live up to Pan’s, he’ll be fine with that.

“What I love about (Pan) is that it made me feel like an 11-year-old kid again,” Jackman said.

Pan opens wide Oct. 9

Bronson Peary (Eddie The Eagle) will be a surprise sports-comedy with a heart! If Hugh is playing a washed-up sports hero who tries to help "Eddie", then we may be in for some dramatic moments ( backstory part).

Wolverine 3 will be one of the most awaited movies -- it will be Hugh's farewell performance as Wolverine! Expect drama, action, maybe even some unexpected elements?

Greatest Showman on Earth -- I expect nothing short of flamboyance in the character of the world's first renowned impresario!

Hugh Jackman - a sweetie in Wolverine clothing

Hugh Jackman deserves his reputation as one of the nicest people in Hollywood, learns Leena Tailor, who speaks to him about his new movie, Pan.



He is regularly referred to as the nicest guy in entertainment, so it's little surprise that on a Saturday afternoon in Beverly Hills, members of the media who would normally be complaining about working in the weekend are instead waxing lyrical about Hugh Jackman.

"I've don't think he's ever had a bad day," insists one reporter.

"He really is the nicest person on the planet," adds a male writer from Spain.

"Afterwards, you're in love with him for two days," pipes in a German journalist.

At 46, the Oscar/Emmy/Tony-winning Australian has clearly won over Hollywood's hard-to-please press, yet it took his latest project Pan to finally impress his own family.

"My kids are generally bored on-set," he tells Living. "It's going to sound spoiled and people are like, 'Are you kidding me? You have a chance to go on the Wolverine set?'



"But most of the time it's the place where they have be quiet and can't do what they want. But on this set they were literally flown around on harnesses in Neverland. It was a real set in these massive warehouses - you could actually get lost in Neverland, it was that big.

"[My son's] very honest with me and he said, 'I don't always like your movies, Dad, but this one's really good.' Even if you're a cool, hip teenager there's something that is universal about this story that attracts them."

Pan tells the origin tale of Peter Pan, played by 12-year-old Australian Levi Miller, and Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund). Jackman stars as pirate Blackbeard.

The actor says he feels an extra pull towards the story now that he's a parent, having adopted Oscar, 15, and Ava, 10, with wife Deborra-Lee Furness after the pair suffered two miscarriages.

"Everyone on the planet knows Peter Pan. It's such a beautiful story and now as a parent, it touches me more because I have adopted kids. There are parts of the story I am very sensitive to.

"It's a story about orphans, so for [my kids] it's important they come to terms with who they are, where they came from and the fact that they're not with their birth parents - and how that feels to them.

"They've seen the movie and they love it, but it was a great chance for us to talk through all that stuff.

"We talk to them all the time about it, but these are issues that they will have their entire lives as adopted kids. They probably will morph and come up in different ways at different ages for them."

Jackman's childhood was coloured with family upheaval. His English immigrant parents divorced when he was 8 and his mother returned to the UK with his two sisters while he remained in Australia with his dad and two brothers.

He discovered his love for the arts early, but didn't feel like he could embrace the passion. His biggest regret was not taking dance lessons at the age of 12.

"A teacher in a school concert pulled me aside and said, 'Look, there's no dancing at this school, but you've got talent and you should go dance.'

"I went, 'I love dance - great!' But someone I know called me a sissy, so I just didn't do it. Then when I was 19 that person and I went to see 42nd Street and at the interval he apologised and said, 'You should be up there on that stage.'

"I signed up the next day, but in the world of dance, ages 12-18 are key if you really want to do it."


Regardless, Jackman has been able to pursue his love for singing and dancing. He has appeared on Broadway in productions including The Boy from Oz, for which he won a Tony Award, and Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway.

In Pan he also gets to sing, including a thunderous entrance to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) had cast rehearse such segments as though they were in a musical and between takes he was pumping music throughout the giant set, which Jackman describes as "a big dance club".

Being able to sing isn't something Jackman takes for granted after a vocal scare forced him off-stage in Turkey in March.

"A vocal haemorrhage sounded dramatic, but it's like a bruise - a bleeding that happens inside and you don't actually feel it. I thought I was fine and the doctor said, 'No, no, no.'
"I couldn't talk for a week. My wife hated it. I quite liked it.

"That was a little bit of a wake-up call, because I was told that if I had sung that night it would probably have ruptured my vocal chords, which means you'll never sing again. "And I was going to walk on that stage. I've performed feeling way worse but I just couldn't feel this so I didn't realise the [severity].

"It's the first time I've missed a show in 18 years and it happens to everyone in life where you're forced to realise that actually we're human."

The ordeal may have reminded the Wolverine actor of his immortality, but it's Pan that has prompted Jackman to adopt a carefree, child-like approach to life.





"I've got kids and it's easy to take the world seriously and go, 'We're adults and have to be responsible.'

"Watching this film makes you feel like a kid again, where everything is possible. You remember how easily we forget that child-like view of life or lose that sense of limitless, creativity, joy and wonder.

"When I was Levi's age, I thought, 'As soon as I leave school everything is going to be incredible and I'll have this freedom.' Here we all are with our freedom but how many adults live life with that sense of freedom that a kid imagines it will be like?

"That's the lesson of Peter Pan - it reminds you to be a kid again and celebrates the imagination of a child [and how] the more we keep that in life, the happier we will be. Of course, we have to grow up and pay rent, but if you can live life with the optimism and sense of wonder a child has, you'll be much happier."

ScreenCraft: So tell us about how Pan came about? It was a Black List script, right?

Jason Fuchs: The Pan script made it to the Black List in 2013. I never wrote it on spec because I was so emotionally attached to this project where I thought, “Oh man, if I write this thing and it dies like 99% of everything does, I’m going to be too bummed about it. I’ll put my heart and soul into it… I’m not going to write this.” I was going to pitch it and if someone was interested they’ll hire me and I’ll write it, but I was too invested in it to write it on spec.

I pitched Pan everywhere when I finished Ice Age: Continental Drift. First off, I thought that after Ice Age: Continental Drift it would be easier to get a job. I certainly had more options than before, sure. I finished Ice Age: Continental Drift in 2012, and I’m living in my agent’s guest bedroom in Los Angeles because you don’t make a ton of money writing an animated film. The movie makes a billion dollars and you make “twelve cents.” So my big passion thing coming off of Ice Age: Continental Drift was Pan.



ScreenCraft: So how does a passion project become a major studio film?

Jason Fuchs: I had this story in me for the better part of twenty years. So I go pitch this and everyone passed. Every studio at the time had competing Peter Pan projects. So I was devastated. I was totally crushed. I loved this thing so much. I wanted to see it through. And no one wanted to do it. So I sort of put it back on the shelf for the next year. I was lucky enough to work on other projects, one of which looks like we’ll be making in February, so that’s great. But a year went by where Pan just stuck with me so I’m hoping there’s some way it will eventually find its way to some kind of life.

So right before the summer of 2013 I had a general meeting with an executive at Warner Brothers named Sarah Schechter, and she said in that meeting, “If you could write anything next, what would it be?”

And I said, “Anything?”

And she said, “Yeah.”

I then told her that I’ve got this Peter Pan prequel that I don’t think you’re going to do it because no one else seems to want to, but it means a lot to me and this is what it is.

I pitched it and she said, “Oh, we’ll do that.”

So they bought it. Suddenly we had a studio and a producer and I wrote it quickly in the summer of 2013. Very aware that there were all of these competing Peter Pan projects. So every day I’d wake up with the fear that I read on Deadline that one of these other movies crossed the finish line and all my work had been for naught. But it didn’t happen. We’re very lucky. We delivered it at the end of that summer.



ScreenCraft: So what was the process like after handing it in and waiting to see if it’ll be greenlit?

Jason Fuchs: There’s that time where you hand it into the studio, hoping they like it, and they said it was great. They gave me their notes and said that they were going to get it to the president of the studio, which doesn’t always happen. Then you wait for that call. You’re waiting with bated breath. We then got the text message saying that he likes it and that we can move forward to get a director.

So each point in this process you’re sort of pinching yourself wondering if you can keep this momentum going and actually pull this thing across the finish line and make a movie. And in this case we were lucky enough to do that.

Director Joe Wright at the time was looking for something like Pan to direct. Joe has made so many amazing films but none of them that his sons could see. He and his wife had wanted a movie that they and their kids could watch and fall in love with. And I think that really spoke to Joe. So he read the script and came in. When he came in I thought that he wasn’t really going to want to do it because he’s the sort of dream choice for something like this. He’s done so many incredible films. It just didn’t add up to me that we could get Joe.

I remember sitting with my folks. We happened to be in New York at the time having dinner at a restaurant. I got the call. He was onboard. And at that point you’re like, “Oh my God. Joe Wright is going to direct this film? We’re actually going to make?! Who’s going to be in it?”

About a month and a half after that, Hugh Jackman signed on and it was suddenly all very real. Once Hugh says yes, you know that we’re making this thing. And then things accelerated very quickly.

A script that I pitched at the beginning of summer 2013, was suddenly beginning principal photography in the last week of April, 2014. It was a very unusual experience and certainly in terms of speed, not one that I imagine will be replicated that many times in my career.



ScreenCraft: Was there any source material to work from for this story?

Jason Fuchs: Nothing other than the Barrie book, no. I read that book at a really young age. I loved that book. I got stuck on the Peter Pan ride when I was nine years old with my dad at Disney World. We got stuck on that part of the ride when you’re suspended in the pirate ship above the miniature London and I was fascinated by the why of it all. Why is Peter Peter Pan, why is he in Neverland, how did he learn how to fly, etc.?

It was something that over the years I would, in my own private hours, imagine various pieces of, and so it really organically grew in my imagination as the years went on.

But the original source material is that Barrie text. I love that book. I’m a fan of Peter Pan before I am the writer of this movie, so everything I did in the script and everything we did for this movie in production, we would always attempt to ground it in the text of Barrie’s book. And what we are inventing we’re hopefully building a template and building on things from the DNA that was in that original text. As opposed to inventing for the sake of inventing or for the sake of something being cool.

So even when you look at our villain in the film, Blackbeard, which a lot of people might look at and go, “Where did that come from and how is Blackbeard in Neverland?” Well, if you read the Barrie book, on Page 53, there’s a quote where it talks about Captain Hook training on a boat under the command of Blackbeard. So I read that and thought, “Oh, that’s our bad guy.” Blackbeard is part of this mythology. And even down to small things where I think only hardcore fans of the Barrie book might notice like the floating lagoons of Neverland. There’s a passage early in the book where Barrie writes about Neverland being a place where the lagoons floated over the flamingos as opposed to vice versa. I read that and remember thinking that was something I’d like to see in the movie one day in big, beautiful 3D.

It really was an attempt to create an original story that put the characters we know and love into a different light and a different context but that was always grounded in the world and characters that Barrie had created so brilliantly one hundred and some odd years ago.

The other goal was also not just to make a prequel just for the sake of making a prequel. It’s not enough to say, “Let’s do a story that happens before the story.” This is telling a story that didn’t just happen to happen before the original text, but that lets you have a different understanding as to who these characters were and what their dynamics are. And what the world around them is. And so my hope is that you finish Pan and you go back and read the original Barrie book, watch the Disney cartoon, watch Spielberg’s Hook -- which I watched four times in the theater -- and you look at all of these characters in a slightly different light. That you’ve learned something about them.



ScreenCraft: So is there a sequel to Pan in the works that takes place before the events we know of in Peter Pan?

Jason Fuchs: I’m still reeling from the fact that we actually made this thing. At the risk of hubris, it’s hard to imagine anything beyond this. But I would say this -- creatively, I love these characters so much and I feel that there’s so much to them that I didn’t want to do short service to anyone and jam pack all of their origins into one film.

So I feel that Pan is an origin story to Peter and an introduction to an earlier Hook. An introduction to Tiger Lily. And an introduction to Tinkerbell. But if you see the film, the movie doesn’t end with James Hook as the villain we all know and love. It doesn’t end with the Tinkerbell and Peter relationship. And that’s by design and truly out of respect for how much I think there is to those characters and how much space and oxygen they deserve.

So I think that with all of that said, there’s a tremendous amount of narrative real estate between where our film ends and where Barrie’s story begins. And as a fan of the book I have a tremendous excitement at what could occupy those spaces and what those possibilities are and where Hook goes from there and how that relationship turns and all of those things creatively excite me to no end.

So we’ll see how people react to this film and my hope is that at some point those are questions I get to imagine the exciting answers to. But I would not be so presumptuous to answer. But I’d feel like the luckiest guy in the world if I have the chance to...

I thought he also did a pretty good job as the convict Jean Valjean ( of losing the Jackman persona) in the opening scene of LES MISERABLES.
