The above screen shot from Prisoners shows a very different Hugh Jackman acting persona. He looks forbidding & shows a glimpse of the near-deranged father he eventually becomes in his effort to find his missing daughter. Contrast it with the conman Harold Hill... all he did was beguile the kids of River City to form a band and the town to regain its sense of community. And what about the charming but cheating Administrator in Bad Education. He fools the kids, the parents's kids, the town... until one kid did him in. Of course the Wolverine persona calls for intimidating acting... while The Boy from Oz is all about disarming audiences. Jo

This is the background to his comments on Hugh Jackman --
Bob Chipman 😁 bobchipman.bsky.social @the_moviebob Get a real sense that Hugh Jackman isn't bullsh---ing when he says this is what keeps pulling him back for Wolverine. Dunno how much of a damn he gives for the "lore" of those movies/franchise/whatever; but he's got that from-the-boards Theater Guy INTENSE crowd connection energy [/quote]

This is like picking your favorite child, but I love these 3 of his early movies: X-Men (2000) Swordfish (2001) Kate & Leopold (2001)
Also The Prestige (2006)

The Variety cover story on Hugh Jackman was an excellent portrait.
Part of it came from various interviews --
not sure if I had posted the actual Variety interview.

I've noticed people on "X" now trying to discover Hugh Jackman's acting portfolio after maybe learning about and seeing PRISONERS. Now someone wants to see The FrontRunner and the rest of his relatively unknown movies. I suggested Bad Education and The Son as two completely different directions in his acting career.
He is mostly known for his Wolverine movies and then The Greatest Showman...followed probably by Les Miserables and Prisoners. But Hugh has littered his career with different types of stories (Eddie The Eagle, Real Steel, Reminiscence are other examples of how he has moved in many "roads not taken").
What a philosophy as an actor!
There has also been current attention to past gems like The Prestige & The Fountain.
Even Oklahoma! from 1998!
How fortuitous that home video and now streaming has allowed access to these past acting showcases.
Too bad Hugh is reluctant to have had at least pro-shots of TBFO/SteadyRain/TheMusicMan/TMTMTS!
They would have allowed access to the other extent of his talent and dedication to the acting/performing arts!

Hugh Jackman, Robert de Niro,Alan Arkin,Tommy Lee Jones, Joaquín Phoenix and Daniel Day Lewis. The assemblage occured during the 2012 awards year. Hugh Jackman was in Les Miserables. This is the company of actors that Hugh Jackman aspired to be in...and probably still aspires to be. His love is drama, hence his ambitions then of joining the Royal Shakespeare Co or The Royal National Theatre. After a degree in journalism and then followed by a degree in dramatic theatre, plus a year with the Acting Center of Australia -- all of which gave him insights on human nature which further enhanced his acting ability But fate led him to the big world of Hollywood movies...via the once moribund superhero genre ( to which he is now acknowleged to have helped in its rejuvenation, via his role of Wolverine in the XMen movie in 2000)... but that doesn't mean that he would no longer want to do dramatic movies. His acting portfolio reflects his love of this genre-- *The Fountain, The Prestige, Prisoners, Bad Education, The Son, even Les Miserables which is a dramatic musical with strong forebear in Victor Hugo's literary masterpiece. His 2 straight plays on Broadway ( Steady Rain & The River ) are 2 contrasting stories of human nature. Whether a major movie or even an indie or a straight play - dramatic stories and roles draw Hugh Jackman. Jo

It is not surprising that he was so elated to have met and acted with 2-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins. Their fairly short scene in The Son was a dramatic highlight of that movie - emphasizing the dual role of Peter... that of a father trying to get his son out of his depression... and a son who suffered due to parental neglect.
It has also been reported that a major reason why he was interested in a superhero movie when he sought to act in Hollywood, despite his background, was because of the presence of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in the cast in the first XMen movie. That acting coincidence came to full fruition when Hugh and Patrick told the story of LOGAN. The drama in LOGAN made it a standout - part of which was Logan's relationship with Prof Xavier. In the view of many, they should have gotten acting nominations for those dramatic portrayals.
His affinity with Florian Zeller, currently France's most eminent contemporary playwright, is also due to the dramatic insights in human nature and relationships that color Zeller's literary work. Hopefully, there will be other opportunities for them to work together again in one of Zeller's dramatic works. Inevitably, the drama has even affected Hugh Jackman personally. Hopefully, it will not be as personal an impact that touched Hugh Jackman in The Son.

While we all bemoan that Hugh Jackman has not yet received his Oscar, preferably in a dramatic movie, we all realize that he continues to seek that one potential role to prove his acting mettle.
Prior to his nomination in Les Miserables, his acting in The Fountain, The Prestige & Prisoners were all well-noted. Beyond Les Miserables ( 2012), his work in LOGAN & Bad Education earned him strong reviews. Bad Education earned him an EMMY acting nomination. The Son was a misunderstood material by critics (except for a very good review from top critics like Variety's Peter Debrugge) but the Golden Globes did recognize his work there with a nomination. It is notable that he does good work with biopics ( Bad Education/The Front Runner...and even the Barnum-inspired Greatest Showman).
Hopefully, he gets to do another role that uses his background in drama studies & experience the fullest.

Why do people think Hugh Jackman is now an old man and cannot handle certain roles
