Here's the Gold Derby article --
I don't agree that putting his performance in a lower category to give him better chances of winning is right!
As one fan said -- Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is " the heart and soul of the movie!".

There is a recent review from Polygon.com of Deadpool & Wolverine which praises exceedingly well his portrayal of Wolverine in the latest movie Deadpool & Wolverine.
Quoting the relevant part --
I am begining to think that there is a serious campaign to get Hugh an Oscar nomination. The last week on social media are full of praise for HJ's car scene ( and log scene) in the movie. many saying that he deserives an Oscar recognition. Whether that is a serious effort, we will have to wait how things will develop.
But why are they batting for a Supporting Actor nod? He is a main character, as much as Deadpool is - he is the "anchor being" which will be the second savior of the dying universe.
Even the film title recognizes that it is a joint and equal effort.
They say it will be easier to get and to win -- but it is almost a disservice to the Wolverine role & character that Hugh Jackman has successfully portrayed and artistically hailed in the 10 movies the character has been featured.
To me, even that cameo in APOCALYPSE, which Bryan Singer put together (after the way Hugh was treated - leadership role transferred to Mystique/JenniferLawerence) --
In a few minutes time - we see him feral as he escapes from his prison, confronts and physically slays all the guards, had a few moments trying to recall his connection with Jean ( now a young version)...very telling few moments of faint recognition... then flight to the outside.
Beautifully and impressively acted by Hugh Jackman!
Even that cameo in First Class was so indelible that it stole the whole movie. The bored and indifferent facial expression uttering typical Wolverine language delivered such a telling message of denial to Prof X & Magneto.
Hugh is such a strong actor - -who uses his face, eyes, even eyebrow, smile or smirk, shoulder shrug, body language and most importantly the right tone of voice ... to come across with his meaning - whether movies or stage. I think early on, in Steady Rain, I felt so appreciative to witness that beyond the good looks lies an excellent actor!

Many people would think that versatility lies in being excellent in maybe 2 genres...
but Hugh Jackman has shown a richer and more layered performing excellence.
Plus he can also be good in dark comedy ( Bad Education) and romcom (Kate & Leopold). Of course there is also his theatre career choices.

From Slashfilm.com --
Btw, the Les Miserables 1980 musical mentioned in the article as its most famous interpretation is NOT the English adaptation in 1985 produced by Mackintosh and headed by Colm Wilkinson. Rather it is referring to the original French musicalized version staged at Palais des Sports in Paris in 1980 by Boublil & Schonberg. Interestingly, the role of Valjean was written as a baritone role ( why would a convict sing like an operatic tenor??) and was performed by a baritone. It was this original musicalized version that was eventually translated to English.
When Hugh visited France/Paris with his family -- I wonder if he traced the many places related to the musical, especially in Paris?

So many comments on social media on how actors are admired because they looked the part or looked like someone wno portrayed the part well -- I think "looking like someone" is the least characteristic to be desired so long as the actor is not a 180-degree turn away from the physical characteristics of the subject ( although that can also happen and a strong portrayal is noted).
Some examples - Scott Eastwood would make a good Wolverine because he is the son of Clint Eastwood who looks a little like Hugh Jackman when Clint was much younger... and since HJ is an excellent Wolverine and therefore...
But can Scott be feral enough? Or charming enough? Or badass and funny enough? So on and so on...

I think Scott Eastwood would make a great Wolverine when Hugh finally hangs up the claws! He was on E.T. yesterday or the day before and they showed a side-by-side of him and young Clint - he looks so much like him! Heâs actually even better looking. And heâs only 38 years old. images.app.goo.gl/MgYdGHDtq3T95Kuz9Nancy
