*I wish the audio had been clearer -- there is so much worth appreciating, especially the discussions on filmmaking. James Mangold is such an in-depth director, whose work is rooted in his artistic and pragmatic appreciation of the art of film-making. If you have read the Cinephilia interview, he provides so much insights and gifts to the art! I hope he and Hugh get another chance to work on another movie, in whatever genre they can find another great storytelling opportunity.

*Hugh does seem a little emotional about what the film meant to him. He even refers to his goodbye to 17 years portraying the character as like the last performance of a show on Broadway ( The Boy from Oz finale was incredible!)...how much it meant to him. He said he thought saying goodbye after the last day of filming would be the final goodbye but then says that the Berlinale screening drove home the point even stronger to him.

(On a side note, he talks about overhearing someone diss LOGAN for being in the festival lineup - Bah, a superhero movie!...I guess the reaction was not surprising, as the Berlinale, together with Cannes and Venice are considered the premier film festivals!).

Personally, if this is the movie for which he might be nominated and even win, I would be so delighted and happy for him. While it is true that GREATEST SHOWMAN is a showcase of his triple-threat talent and probably has a better chance of winning acting honors compared to the LOGAN performance ( because the SHOWMAN role is the one that will differentiate him so much from the other portrayals), his close involvement in 7 full movies in 17 years brings on such a sentimental regard for this film portrayal that he will probably never ever forget his experiences and highlights with his Wolverine role. Many and he himself calls the Wolverine role as career-defining!

*Many are hoping that LOGAN can get at least an Oscar nomination for Best Picture because it does deserve full recognition in the year's pantheon of great movies!

It’s that time of year again. Blockbuster season is over, the dark nights are coming in, and, with the exception of some little-known sci-fi film called The Last Jedi, movie geeks are gearing up for awards season.

This is one of the rare moments in the movie calendar where you can take your pick of a veritable array of fascinating indie films, the likes of which frequently struggle to get recognition amidst the studio tent-poles and A-List spectacles. By now, you’re probably sick of hearing which films have that coveted Oscar buzz, since most of these conversations have been taking place before this year’s Academy Award winners were even announced. There’s tons to enjoy and I heartily recommend you check out some of those little movies that could – from The Florida Project to Call Me By Your Name – but frequently, it’s not so bright a time for genre lovers.

Historically, sci-fi, fantasy and horror have struggled to gain traction with the very traditional voters of the Academy. Call it genre snobbery or just a misunderstanding of what speculative fiction can do, but the gap between what Oscar voters frequently consider "awards-worthy" and the genre crowd-pleasers that most ticket-buying audiences enjoy is a stark one.

That could change this year, as Jordan Peele’s staggeringly good satirical horror Get Out has become an unlikely frontrunner in the race. Not only that, but a certain movie called Wonder Woman is making history with Warner Bros. funding a major awards push for it (referred to as For Your Consideration campaigns), which is a rarity for any superhero film, much less one helmed by a woman. Either of these films making it to the podium next year would be a major breakthrough for genre lovers, but there’s one film whose incredible achievements are being overlooked during this season, and it’s become increasingly baffling.


Logan, James Mangold’s deconstruction of the Wolverine story, is easily one of the best films of the year: A neo-Western dystopia that takes on the cruel realities of ageing alongside a deeply political story of crossing the border from Mexico to America and a fable-esque exploration of a strange young girl’s fate. And on top of that, it’s an ultra-violent superhero movie! Even the most ardent X-Men fan couldn’t have predicted how ambitious and daring Mangold’s film would be. After all, the Wolverine film series is spotty at best, and that was before we reached Peak Superheroes. Hardened cynics to the genre quickly warmed to this brutal tale that wasn’t afraid to go bleak or interrogate the smothering realities of getting older, sicker and sadder. If you took out the adamantium claws and all the mutant talk, it’s easy to see the film going all the way to the Academy Awards as the dark horse contender of the year, much in the same way Hell or High Water pulled it off in 2016.


And yet Logan has been notably absent from awards talk. How does one of the most intense and deftly handled stories of 2017 find itself on the outskirts of these conversations? It can’t all be genre snobbery, surely?


It’s easy to downplay Logan’s achievements, or pretend that what it’s doing really isn’t all that interesting or challenging, when in reality it’s a near acrobatic feat of ideas, styles, tones and cultural contexts. Anyone coming to Logan would be aware of the many years Hugh Jackman has put into the role, of the evolution that character has taken, both in live-action and on the comic book pages. They may even be aware of the Old Man Logan run in the comics that inspired the film, but none of that would prepare them for the magnitude or emotional impact of Logan, a film that wearily wears the weight of history on its shoulders and shows the scars that leaves.


Jackman has never been better in the part. He fits the role of Logan like a well-worn suit, and now you can see the fraying edges. This is the least heroic Logan has ever been, struggling to make money in a poverty-stricken region where his previous life as a legendary hero is all but myth, even to himself. He’s ably assisted by Sir Patrick Stewart, who brings new layers to his work as Professor Xavier. Never before has the character been so tragic or difficult to watch, now in his 90s and barely holding it together as control over his powers deteriorates. He brings dignity to those moments of pity, somehow still the kindly professor of eternal optimism for the world even as he swears like a trooper while Logan helps him to use a public bathroom. If you’ve ever known anyone who’s suffered from brain damage of a degenerative brain condition, a lot of these scenes will hit very close to home, and it’s to the film’s credit that this exploration of illness is not cheapened by faux-shock or turned into a gruesome spectacle. Dafne Keen, the 12 year old Spanish-British actress who plays Laura, manages the tricky feat of being an authentically tough child who's still deeply broken and desperate to get by.

In its own way, Logan is one of the great political movies of the year: a story of poverty, child exploitation, racism and refugees, with the striking scene where masked agents chase a group of Mexican mutant children through the forest standing as one of the most pertinent and unforgettable moments on film in 2017. Logan handles these issues better than many straightforward dramas do, yet so many viewers still have trouble getting over the genre trappings surrounding such themes.

Whatever way you slice it, Logan is a brilliant film, and even in a year where we haven’t been short of brilliant films across a variety of styles and genres, it remains at the front of the pack. Some critics groups have taken notice and awarded Patrick Stewart nods for best supporting actor, but surely it deserves more. Logan is visceral yet poignant; an ultraviolent Western that’s also a metatextual meditation on the superhero genre; Hugh Jackman’s finest performance and the birth of a future star. Perhaps its slid by the wayside in part because Jackman has another big Oscar contender this year with more realistic chances at nominations – his P.T. Barnum musical The Greatest Showman – but Logan still needs people in its corner. One of 2017’s great films, and undoubtedly a future superhero classic, deserves better.

It is really all very disappointing! It's not as if LOGAN did not earn the money at the box office to fund an Oscar campaign.

Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell and Sharon Stone will announce the nominees for the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards on Monday, Dec. 11 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.


The HFPA will livestream the nominations exclusively using Facebook Live on the Golden Globes Facebook Page and at GoldenGlobes.com beginning at 5:15 a.m PST. NBC’s Today Show will live broadcast the second set of categories beginning at 5:38:30 a.m. PST.

Woodard, Hedlund, Bell and Stone will be joined by the previously announced Golden Globe Ambassador, Simone Garcia Johnson; Hollywood Foreign Press Association President, Meher Tatna; and Barry Adelman, executive VP of Television at dick clark productions.



Woodard was most recently seen in Marvel’s Luke Cage and Lemony Snickets: A Series of Unfortunate Events, while Hedlund currently stars in Mudbound. Bell currently stars in the NBC television series The Good Place, and Stone currently stars in the James Franco-directed The Disaster Artist.

Given the uncertainty caused by the Disney acquisition of Fox studio and the XMen franchise included, we are thankful that they had been able to bring to us a remarkable movie that brings a memorable and touching end to the saga of Wolverine in this original trilogy!

It seems the awards community is being shortsighted and even likely blinded by social justice issues to be ignoring what the Deadline interviewer is saying categorically was one of the best movies of 2017!

I guess in the collective memory of movie audiences LOGAN will not be forgotten as arguably the best superhero movie that came out of the genre!

It’s telling that Wolverine is the only one of the major X-Men who hasn’t been played by another, younger star along the way. Jackman’s performance has always cut deeper than the spandex he wore for it — he wasn’t a vessel for this character, the character was a vessel for him. And with “Logan,” it’s clear that he was saving the best for last. Playing the fallen hero as a Johnny Cash song with adamantium claws, Jackman indelibly humanizes the rule, bringing real vulnerability and tenderness to a once-invincible icon. In a genre where most of the choices are shaped by studio notes and watered down by fan service, Jackman rides off into the sunset by proving that his Wolverine was his own man, able to withstand almost anything. He was big even when the pictures got small, and even bigger when they didn’t. “Don’t be what they made you,” Logan says at one point. However, I find it sometimes appalling that in the list of performances, the emphasis has always been the dramatic appeal. Why can't a portrayal in a movie musical be equally impressive...and to tell the truth, how many actors can deliver an outstanding performance requiring triple-threat talent?

Films of the year 2017: Logan (8th place)

Spoilers for Logan lie ahead...

2017 was a great year for comic book movies – Thor: Ragnarok made the end of the world hilarious, Wonder Woman was great and finally put to bed the idea that bad films are bad because women are leading them, Spiderman: Homecoming proved that apparently we did want to go see yet another incarnation of Spidey, and Justice League... was a film that came out. However, one film stood out even in such an exciting crowd as a truly brilliant piece of film-making based on a comic book – the latest instalment in Fox’s X-Men universe, Logan.



It would be very easy to draw up a simple list of reasons that Logan is so good. It’s dark, it’s gritty, it takes beloved characters in unexpected directions, it offers a contrast with the also excellent but very different brighter interpretations of comic book characters currently popular. But, as is becoming increasingly clear, being ‘dark’ and ‘gritty’ by itself is not an indicator of quality. Adding a bit more death and destruction and making your characters miserable, is not, in and of itself, great art. Logan succeeds not simply because it tells a darker story than X-Men films usually do, but because it knows exactly what it wants to do and does it really well.

One aspect of the film that is handled very well is its violence. Logan is far from the first film based on a comic book or graphic novel to be given an R rating, and an R rating is not inherently necessary to tell a violent story – The Hunger Games, for example, tells an extremely violent story without quite enough blood on screen to need such a rating. What makes Logan stand out is how well it deploys that level of violence and onscreen gore. For the first time, the film depicts how someone with the sort of weapons Logan has to hand (heh heh) might fight and the sort of damage they might inflict. It’s a visceral experience that plunges the viewer thoroughly into Logan’s violent world. It’s also an important story decision. So much of the plot of the film focuses on Logan’s physical decline, and the giving and receiving of physical pain, and we are really made to feel every blow, kick and slice in a way we haven’t in the other X-Men movies.

There is so much more to this film, though, that just a bit of the old ultra-violence. The X-Men franchise has been supported, since its inception in 2000, by the performances of some great actors, foremost among them Hugh Jackman (who appears in some form in all 10 films, albeit the 10th is on a magazine cover) and Patrick Stewart (who appears in 7). This film is their farewell, and what a farewell it is. One ending is utterly shocking, hitting the audience like a punch in the gut; the other is anticipated, offering more closure, rounding out both the film and the franchise to date. Both are the end of long journeys we’ve taken with these people. The characters will go on – Charles Xavier will reappear once again in the form of James McAvoy next year, and Wolverine/Logan will inevitably follow in a new incarnation eventually – but these versions of these characters, played by these actors, are given a farewell to remember here.

They are also surrounded by a group of fantastic performances from newer faces. We know that Patrick Stewart can act everyone around him off the screen – part of the appeal of the X-Men movies is matching him up with Ian McKellen and giving him someone equally brilliant to bounce off from. While McKellen may be sadly absent from this film, Dafne Keen makes a stunning debut and brings a fresh new dynamic to Stewart and Jackman’s well-worn familiarity. Jackman himself is as strong and as likeable as ever (despite Logan’s being at an even lower point than we’ve seen before) and Stephen Merchant rounds out the X-cast with a wonderfully nervous performance as Caliban.

Logan is not an unending exercise in misery – there is black humour here, and while the lead characters may all be prickly in the extreme, we still like them and care about them. What makes the film work is that there is still heart in these people and in the story. The experience of watching the film is tense and shocking in places, with a middle section that feels like it’s dropped straight out of a horror film and into this franchise. But there is love and hope there too, and reason enough to want to see these characters keep fighting, and to see some kind of light at the end of a very dark tunnel. The whole thing comes together to produce a really beautiful, gut-wrenching work of art.

6. X-24 (Hugh Jackman) in Logan

Hugh Jackman’s greatest performance in an X-Men movie (and maybe any movie) was not just as Wolverine in Logan but also as the character’s own evil clone, X-24. At first, he’s more henchman than villain, but for a genre where so many arch-nemeses are like doppelgängers (particularly for Marvel-based properties), he’s the most significant match for Wolverine, even bettering the mutant hero in a one-on-one fight. He’s also quite deadly, killing two of the series’ most beloved characters, and is the final bad guy to defeat.

What is not apparent to many is that the character of X-24 is not just the piece's top villain, but he is also a metaphor to represent the dark side of Wolverine. He is the physical representation of that aspect of Wolverine who is a killing machine when he is in extreme rage. It is the soulless aspect of himself that Wolverine has tried to suppress. And in this storyline, the metaphor has been actualized. And in the end, the good Wolverine triumphs over that part of himself which he was not always proud of. True, it cost Wolverine his life, but to have done so especially for someone whom he hoped would only retain the good in him in her ( to use her natural ability/gift for good)! That would be the final redemption and his leaving his legacy in another part of himself ( in X-23).

On a personal note -- I write this with a wink because it reminds me of how we stumbled on the character very early on when Hugh was spotted at the Apolline Restaurant in New Orleans with a buzz cut! He was smiling while having a meal, so who would ever have thought that we just got a sneak peek on the film's top secret

When X-23 rose

In a year full of outstanding superhero movies, Fox pulled no punches--not even adamantium-clawed ones--when making their R-rated Logan. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart offered electrifying performances in this violent and bold final chapter of Wolverine's tale. But it was newcomer Dafne Keen who blew us away as Laura, a mutant/child soldier who threw off her shackles and fought with all her might for freedom. Though most of the film has this glowering little girl communicating through grunts and violent outbursts, Keen brought not only a riveting intensity but also a sparking humanity to her role. And opposite one of Hollywoood's biggest stars to boot! On top of all that, she punched and slashed a path to an exciting, and female-fronted possibility for this franchise to continue. You know an X-23 spinoff movie is on our wish list. - Kristy Puchko

The SAG overlooked the trio of Jackman/Stewart/Keen when it gave out its nomination for Best Ensemble ( the guild's most prestigious award)! The three gave one of the most powerhouse portrayals, individually and as a group!

The trio had acting chops, charisma, and bonded together very well as a tight-knit acting entity!
