LOGAN, of course, is the culmination of a long commitment to a role that defined his career! It would have been such a glorious end to that aspect of his career arc had LOGAN not just ended with critical praise and box office glory but had the film also been recognized by peers as among the best that has been produced this year. But that was not meant to be, as far as the Golden Globes and other minor awards are concerned. There is still Oscar recognition that is a potential in the horizon. But if that does not happen, it will not make the dual accomplishment of LOGAN being a box office champ and a widely-recognized artistic triumph with the critics any less significant! A true landmark in his career!
How many actors can truthfully say that they delieverd two outstanding portrayals, very different portrayals at that, in one season?
I think what is very meaningful to Hugh with the Golden Globe nomination is not so much his own nomination but the fact that THE GREATEST SHOWMAN per se is being recognized for its artistic merit and entertainment value. His excitement is not so much because he got a nod for Best Actor in the Comedy-Musical category but it must be over the recognition that this project over which he made a professional commitment over a very long period in his career has reached a triumphant completion, first with the world premiere, now the Golden Globes acknowledgement, and when it opens to the general public!
It has not been an easy journey. We know only of the superficial journey...but not all the difficulties and stumbles that the project had to hurdle! He probably thought that the final product would already signify the successful completion of that dream project. He probably did not expect that the efforts will be rewarded even more richly. I guess the only hurdle in the journey will be how the box office will react to this source of pride for Hugh Jackman!

Jo, that was a great summary of the awards season as it applies to Hugh and the two great performances he's presented. Do you think the SAGS will also recognize Hugh's work with a nomination tomorrow?

I have no idea.
Hugh was nominated for a Leading Role by a Male Actor for LES MISERABLES. The advantage of Les Miserables was that it was a well-known brand ( from its stage musical roots). It was also a dramatic musical, which was likely an advantage then because there is no distinction between drama and comedy/musical for the SAG awards.
In the case of CHICAGO, Renee Z won for Leading Role by a Female Actress while Catherine ZJ won it for a Best Supporting Role. Richard Gere was a nominee but did not win. However the cast of CHICAGO won for Best Cast.
Also, it is possible that his LOGAN portrayal can also be among the possibilities. I do remember that there was a LOGAN screening for SAG-AFTRA members at the FOX Studio lot a while ago.
There is another award that only the SAG gives -- for Best Cast of a Motion Picture. This is the most important category as there is no Best Picture category.
However, I do not know if Fox has already held a screening for the the SAG-AFTA Nominating Committee for THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. Maybe they did.
We don't know if certain issues such as racism ( Oscars-so-white), feminism ( the push for female recognition) and the current scandals enveloping Hollywood might color the voting by the actors?
The SAG vote is important because it is the sub-set member of AMPAS which recommends the acting honors nominations, via its Nominating Committee ( I am familiar with this because one of the discussants we had in the defunct message board at IMDB for Les Mis was a member of the Nominating Committee). Afterwards, the AMPAS general membership will then vote on the nominations given by SAG/AMPAS for the Best Actor win. Also, since the SAG is the largest group in terms of membership in the AMPAS, it can hold sway on the final vote for Best Actor, unless it is a very tight race.
Let's just hope for the best!

I don't know what the movie press has against THE GREATEST SHOWMAN -- but... *After dissing the value of the Golden Globes ( in very strong and uber-disdainful manner) , some of the so-called movie press ( trade paper like Variety and film bloggers like Collider), do not acknowledge at all that THE GREATEST SHOWMAN can have a chance with the Oscars. Yet no one mentions how accurate the predictions of the GGlobes were re LA LA LAND...so much so that the Oscars did not just copy the Globes earlier predictions/votes, the AMPAS added a few more *I still have to read any of these bloggers say that Hugh Jackman deserved his Golden Globe nomination! Some even had the temerity to say that he got it undeservedly at the expense of LOGAN! Maybe they do not like triple-threat performances or musicals but not to acknowledge that an actor can do all those things exceptionally well seems petty to me. DDLewis (every snooty critic's idol) once tried leading a starry cast in a film adaptation of a Broadway musical called NINE ( among the supposed theatre cognoscenti), inspired by one of the most famous films ("8 1/2") in the past by famed Italian director Fellini -- but it went nowhere with the awards community for DDL! On a different level -- is it cool to always dislike musicals? I must confess I find it odd because other than in American culture ( no offense meant) do I read about any other country being vociferous against movie musicals! Even the classical-theatre-loving Brit audiences love their musicals ( stage or film)! It is a conundrum! Wake up, movie press! Wake up again, AMPAS! The Oscars did honor some musicals for Best Picture in the more recent past -- Chicago/Sound of Music/West Side Story/My Fair Lady, compared to the Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals. Is it because we have entered the age of cynicism? It is a great source of amusement ( at least to me) that many "traditional Broadway type of fans" ( think ATC and BWW) think the songs were "overproduced"! Lol - that is probably the reason why the younger demos love them -- it gives them " the feels" -- the lyrics, the sounds...and all the bells and whistles! Time to come around to what a different generation may love! Maybe they also thought that what we loved with the works of Rodgers & Hammerstein et al is too old-fashioned! To each his own! But wouldn't it be richer for all of us if we try to find out what works for the younger or older generations to our own way of thinking, feeling...and be the better for it? I think Hugh is one of the luckier ones - he embraces all the different tastes of each musical generation! *I guess the greatest value of the GGlobes nominations especially for BEST PICTURE is that they came out right before the movie opens! The nominations have put the movie in the public eye in a big way ( as many of the general public believe the GGlobes's prediction value for Oscar glory, whether deserved or coincidental or simply wished for)! People who may have doubts about seeing it may say "Hmm... this was nominated by the Golden Globes... maybe we should give it a try"). The movie demos that may actually go and see it assuredly, maybe even repeatedly, are those who have been totally charmed by the musical score soundtrack and those who have seen the clips/trailers and other publicity material and now think that the movie speaks to them. THIS IS ME is as much an anthem to the movie's misfits as well as to the young people who feel alienated in real life because they do not shine in particular. The contemporary tone has attracted so much of the young people -- validated by the ridiculously high LIKE ratios and very strong preferences indicated on the YouTube feedback section for each individual song! It speaks to them, they say! *Will it get the SAG and the AMPAS favor ? Let's hope so. Even if it is ignored, the Golden Globes recognition has already lifted the movie into the bright spotlight! Hugh's emotional reaction to the nominations speak so much of their hopes and fears that carried the creatives and ultimately the cast through the long years of bringing the musical to life! variety.com/2017/film/in-contention/oscars-best-picture-field-shifts-into-focus-1202636267/

Is this the first time SAG has recognized the lead actor of a genre movie (Daniel Kalluya in the horror film GET OUT)? Nice, but as long as they decided to nominate the male lead in a genre movie, I wish that genre would have been comic book/superhero instead.
Or an original movie musical. Oh, well.
Re HJ’s category in the Globes, critic Dave Karger on “Access” thinks James Franco will take it for THE DISASTER ARTIST. Was hoping he’d predict someone else. We’ll see.

Can you believe this Only one song is eligible for Best Song for THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ( THIS IS ME) while other movies have as many as 3 candidates meeting Oscar requirements www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-70-songs-are-eligible-academy-award-consideration-1069041Or did FOX decide not to submit more than THIS IS ME so other candidates from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN do not cancel out the chances of THIS IS ME?? I saw a tweet with an attached "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION" inscription to THIS IS ME ( which included a disc and music sheets). Did Fox ignore all the other songs deliberately? We won't have a chance to see Hugh Jackman sing at the Oscars in his passion project musical Also, the dramatic underscoring category ( Film Score) did not give THE GREATEST SHOWMAN a chance, yet 141 movies were deemed eligible deadline.com/2017/12/2018-oscars-original-score-eligible-films-list-1202229473/If FOX decided NOT to submit its film score as a candidate -- why??? I don't believe the movie has no dramatic arc and is simply a set of strung-together MTVs Unless it is because no SCREENERS have been sent out yet at least to the AMPAS music branch ( if that is the nominating body) ?? For both cases -- has the deadline for submission already passed? Jo

That stinks, but I don't understand why...what makes a song eligible or not eligible? Did I miss that? Lost the actual tweet -- but an actor responding to someone's prediction that JFranco will win the GGlobes said " the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has so much love for Hugh Jackman" that he predicts it will be Hugh who will win the Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy award.
Hope so!
Hope the more recent worldwide reception to the movie and Hugh's performance will solidify their thinking along those lines!

Translated to say that the invited casts of THE GREAT SHOWMAN will be sitting on the same table as that of I,TONYA.
Why -- because they are both nominated under MUSICAL/COMEDY category?
Hmm... it would have been more practical to have the casts of SHOWMAN and ALL THE MONEY seated together - so Michelle Williams ( who is nominated for ALL THE MONEY) could be on the same table as THE GREATEST SHOWMAN.

The two seats may be reserved for Michael Gracey and Deborra Lee Furness ( she was also given a seat at the table when LES MISERABLES and Hugh won the Golden Globes).

If popularity is the basis for a GGlobe win, then Showman is the frontrunner?
