At least one critic gets it right. I also love how the majority of critics sing the praises of Hamilton on Broadway where historical figures like Alexander Hamilton rap and dance and speak in contemporary styles and phrasing yet somehow “The Greatest Showman” gets crucified for incorporating pop tunes and contemporary dance numbers in their movie. Hypocrites! It was a pleasure to go see a movie and just be entertained. If I want to know the historical facts and biography of Barnum, I will go read a book, not see a musical that was “inspired” by Barnum, not intended to be his life story, as expressed by the creators of the movie. I also love how today we have become so perversely high minded and critical of historical figures from centuries ago and cut them to pieces because they did things and said things that were more widely accepted back in their time period. His circus/side shows were part of mid-nineteenth century entertainment. If you want Barnum, warts and all, read his entire life story, his early scams and lottery promotions and exhibiting so called freaks in his sideshows, but also his spirited defiance of slavery when he became an elected official in CT and his generous philanthropy and innovation creating early traveling carnivals. Why are we so unforgiving these days and closed minded when it comes to historical figures, even ones like Barnum who evolved and changed during the course of his life, as we all do?

Anyway the movie is just inspired by his creation of a traveling circus and his contributions to early show business, take it for that, so critics next time, just sit back and get off your high horses and be entertained. The music and dance numbers should make you smile. The actors were all perfectly cast and their enthusiasm is infectious. Zendaya and Efron and Jackman were unbelievably good and I can’t get Never Enough and Rewrite the Stars from my head. Kudos to Jackman for laboring to get this feature made after years and years of work.

I think it's hilarious that people keep bringing up the song that Jenny Lind sings, I feel that she is performing an operatic song for the people and the song we hear is her inner monologue of what she's feeling. Think about that the next time you listen to the song, it makes it even more powerful.
