The original ATC poster deliberately or unwittingly omitted one other classic movie...but someone made up for that snob.

probably the quintessential American musical. I had other stuff to do yesterday (and own it on DVD), but while I watched some of it, I was awestruck as usual by Onna White's choreography, especially just love how she staged "Marian the Librarian". Does anyone know if this was similar to how she originally staged it on Broadway? The editing is quite wonderful, with cut-aways to things like little kids (and also Tommy Djilas and Zanetta Shinn) behind a big book of "Romeo and Juliet", and great business happening on the spiral staircase. It's just such fun and really advances the plot. Robert Preston is really so superb; his impact in the role on Broadway and the film transfer must have been such an astounding surprise when he was known mainly before for being a character actor playing movie villains.

Robert Preston is priceless as Harold Hill, and it's remarkable that he got to re-create his Tony-winning triumph for the big screen.

As Wikipedia notes, Preston wasn't the first choice for the movie because he wasn't a big box-office star. Bing Crosby was offered the role, but turned it down. Warners also wanted Frank Sinatra, but Willson insisted on Preston. And Warner tried to cast Cary Grant, but he declined, saying ''nobody could do that role as well as Bob Preston.'' (Grant also reportedly turned down the role of Henry Higgins for the movie of ''My Fair Lady.'')

Barbara Cook, Preston's Tony-winning co-star, wasn't so lucky. Warner's decided it couldn't produce ''The Music Man'' with TWO unknowns, so Shirley Jones, an Oscar winner, got to play Marian. In any event, ''The Music Man'' became a big box office hit. It earned 6 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, but alas, none for Best Actor. Preston wouldn't score an Oscar nomination until 2 decades later, for ''Victor/Victoria'' (1982).

I recorded The Music Man on my DVR and started watching it last night. I was 7 when it first came out and I don’t think I ever saw it. So far I am underwhelmed. If it was Hugh as Harold Hill, I’m sure I’d have a different perspective!

My appreciation of the musical has changed.

I find it more interesting now as a social satire of small town Americana. I do not know if Meredith Willson intended that to be in painting this scene from early 20th century - but he excelled in giving a portrait of different characters in midwest America, the culture and mores of that time. He probably did - that is why his musical has not become stale.

Looking forward to it - from its musical strength, its character portrayals, the acting and other talent display, and the whole spectacle!

I wonder if any have noticed --

when you browse the seating charts, for say a particular date, I noticed that some seats nearest the wall ( Left and Right Orchestra) in the first few seats near the front are priced at $ 125 plus fees...but they seem not to be available now. I wonder if this is for "RESTRICTED VIEWING" or reserved for eventual RUSH seats?

Btw, they seemed to have been eliminating the once-before FRONT ROW and the next row has now become the front one. This is probably in compliance with American Equity's requirements that front rows should maintain a certain distance from the stage for added protection for the performers ( who will be maskless)?

“The Music Man” sold out whatever seats it had left on telecharge.com Tuesday.

The musical revival starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster had already sold most of its seats to ticket brokers. They’re listing them on various resale sites for up to $4,000 a ticket or more.

But StubHub might have the highest price ticket yet: one seat on the night of December 22nd, for a total of $11,777.49. It’s in the fourth row center at the St. James Theater.

There’s only one of these as far as I can tell. Your plus-one or date might have to settle for something in the $4,0000 range.

You’d really have to want to see Jackman as Harold Hill in a big way. Of the total $11,777.49, $2000 of it is a service charge. You still have to pay also for a drink, a snack, merchandise, and so on. So that could run another 100 clams.

For that much money, you could take a group of friends to any other excellent show like “Hamilton” or the “Company” revival, not to mention dinner at Broadway watering hole like Joe Allen or Orso and still have money left for a limo.

*Show is at the Winter Garden, not at St. James!

*I checked Dec 22 and that is SOLD OUT, per Telecharge. Holiday dates are usually extremely-marked up with secondary sellers, not Telecharge.

*Brokers buy a lot of premium tickets early on to resell at very high markups. Not necessarily that Telecharge has a deal with them - because the seats were available to everyone when they were first offered. I am getting the feeling that a central distributor in the secondary market has cornered many excellent premium seats and the secondary market sellers are drawing from it to resell to the public.

*Many tickets are still available on other dates - maybe, you may want to pick up your choice as soon as possible...or avoid dates which are expected to draw very high interest from ticket buyers?

Also, hotel rates and airline tickets seem to be on the rise fast.

Hope the article does not frighten prospective ticket buyers, if they think the prices at Telecharge mirror the secondary market prices.

Btw, do recheck your tickets if you originally bought Row BB Front Row tickets -- it seems, due to the new American Equity requirement of minimum distance between performers on stage and the audience ( re pandemic restrictions), that row seems to have been eliminated at the moment. Maybe if the pandemic wanes at a certain date, they may restore them? Or they may have been eliminated due to staging requirements. Btw, according to the box office and to an agent at Telecharge, the stage at the Winter Garden is on the high side.

I have also noticed ( although someone first wrote about it in one of the Broadway message boards) that there seems to be some seats in the first few rows of Left and Right Orchestra, by the theatre walls, which are priced at only $ 125 plus fees -- but they seem not to be offered for sale at the moment. Maybe the seats offer only restricted viewing? Either they are sold out or maybe reserved for RUSH? Just speculating on my part.

Eliminating 1 or 2 front rows is not uncommon on Broadway.

That happened to The Boy From Oz, where the 2 front rows were eliminated supposedly because they interfered with staging requirements. The occupants were transferred to vacant orchestra seats or were given a choice to find other dates.

That was how Row AA became front row.

It looks like people think of THE MUSIC MAN as not just a show for celebrating a personal event ( anniversaries & birthdays), reunions ( love the grandma who bought tickets for herself, her daughter & her granddaughter) but also as gifts to friends ( or to oneself - like Moi ) --
