But I think he loves the experience and, at heart, is a true tourist ( and I mean this in a very positive light -- the desire to embrace what is different from your own culture and homeplace)!

IT’S been quite a year for all-singing, action man Hugh Jackman. .

After bagging a Golden Globe for his turn in hit musical Les Misérables, the Aussie star got his claws out for a solo Wolverine film before starring in the tense, Oscar-fancied thriller Prisoners.

With The Wolverine out on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday, we caught up with him to chat about Marvel’s iconic hardman.

You are Hollywood’s longest-serving superhero. How does that make you feel?

Really grateful. That’s the kind of overwhelming feeling I have, especially being on this film that I am shooting now, X-Men: Days of Future Past, with this great cast and with Bryan Singer. What gave me so many opportunities in this business was playing this part in X-Men and that it is still going is just amazing for me. It is such a rare thing and I am enjoying it more than ever. You may be surprised to hear that but I really am. Does getting in shape for the role get harder each time, as you’re always a little bit older? Oh, yes. That is easily recognized because, first of all, the diets become stricter, the regimes become harder, I need longer to get there and I get punished for any sins so I really have to stay more on it than ever before. But I am really happy with the results so in the end that’s okay. It is a purity but it is not forever. I am not a gym junkie and I am not going to be like that forever. Trust me.


What regime did you use?

Basically, there is a lot of science behind intermittent fasting or having a period of each day when you are not eating. So you eat for an eight-hour window and then don’t eat for 16 hours. I feel a lot better on that regime; my energy is better, I sleep better. There’s a lot of research saying that it’s better for your heart, cancer and many, many things to give your body a break, but during those eight hours I eat like 6,000 calories and that is kind of brutal.

What happened to your neck when you did the Bullet Train scene? You got quite badly hurt?

When I get flung out of the train they had to simulate what it was like for your body going out of a train at 300km an hour. I had a rig on and I was connected to the other actor, because we were flying out together, and something happened to our position. I got caught up the wrong way so when I hit the train my neck got caught. To simulate the whip they would whip my whole body around, so my neck was put into a very unnatural position and for a second you hear a little ‘click’ sound and you are not sure what is going on. It was actually okay but I had a very, very sore neck and a good fright.

What did you learn from that?

I have been around long enough to know that these things happen and you have got to be very safe and you have to prepare. You have to rehearse, which we’d done, and I think I am being honest when I say I am a little warier as the years go on. I always now get my stunt-double to do a rehearsal. I say I don’t want to rehearse. I want a first take because sometimes when people rehearse it is half-hearted. You might have the riggers but not everyone else is there. As soon as you have a take it is a different atmosphere and I want to test things under that situation.

Was that the most imperilled you’ve felt on a movie set?

When do you think that the Academy will start taking comic-book movies more seriously?

Heath Ledger won the Oscar for his portrayal so in many ways I think they are seeing it. I think more and more they are seeing the quality of filmmaking and the aspirations of filmmakers. I think the same about comedies. I always think that not enough of the academy members have actually tried to do a comedy, but heaven knows how hard that is to pull off. So when you get a great comedy — I thought Bridesmaids was going to win a whole load of stuff.

What is Logan’s main curse? Is it that he lives forever?

That is a very good question. We explore in this what it is like to live forever when you really don’t want to live, when you have lost the reason or the meaning of life. Really, his main curse is this beserker rage. It is what defines him. He doesn’t have the most powerful powers — on paper his powers aren’t that incredible if you think of other mutants who would probably have the upper hand. He can’t jump, he can’t fly; he has claws and he can heal but he is probably the most feared or powerful in a way because of that very human quality of his inner beserker rage. That animalistic side of him gives him power and strength but it also causes damage, loss and pain. And with the immortality, everyone he loves dies — everyone who has ever meant anything to him has passed on. What sort of life is that?

How important were the scenes with Famke Janssen?

Very important and they became even more important as we shot the film. There’s even more in the script that we shot because it dawned on us that if you want to understand Wolverine — it takes place just after X-Men 3. He kills Dark Phoenix, the love of his life, Jean Grey, he kills her and credits roll. You don’t have time to examine that so seeing that interaction was really nice in terms of understanding him and what haunts him most. It became bigger and bigger as we shot.


How did you enjoy starring with so many female characters around you?

Apart from the obvious, it was great that we got to explore that because I always kept saying, ‘look we have the Jean Grey storyline, but one of the great things from the comic book was that Wolverine has dated every mutant that has ever been written, because that is his saving grace, and his Achilles heel, both at once. And it is a great way to really understand him because on one side he never wants to get involved. He is a very interior, loner type of character. It is not going to play poker with the boys that will get him involved. It is women. So in this movie we have four meaningful roles for women. They are all very different archetypes as well and that made for an interesting difference from the last movie. There was so much testosterone; it was overwhelming, so this was kind of fantastic.

This is a film about immortality. Do you think that art and making movies in some ways immortalises you?

No. Everything passes. Trust me. Everything passes at some point. If you are in a movie that is still being watched 500 years from now, that is one amazing piece of work and it will be possible and that will actually happen. I don’t think of it as that. I never think of it. To me, the greatest high I have ever had as an actor is not the idea that I am in a movie that is going to be watched in 500 years. The greatest highs I have ever had have all been on stage, which is actually the briefest, fleeting of moments that just happen. Something magic happens that is beyond description, beyond words, when thousands of strangers in the audience and on stage get connected. You feel the whole audience and story and actor connect and hearts can melt. That’s a moment that is gone like that, it is unforgettable. That is what is timeless, really.

What do you like most about Japanese culture?

The food. It is my favourite cuisine. But I love so many things about their culture. I love their attention to detail, I love the bonds they have, not just to family but societal bonds, the respect they have and their humility. Working with these Japanese actors was very humbling. Hiroyuki Sanada has done like 60 movies and is a legend. We were shooting in Sydney and we had 200 extras on the set. I saw him on the set, one by one, at the end of a line shake hands with every extra and thank everyone at the end of each day. Then people say to me, ‘you are a nice guy!’ He takes it to another level. And it is from deep within and it’s genuine. He was sort of hiding. He didn’t want people to think he was doing it as a show. He just has that humility.

What can you reveal about the upcoming X-Men film?

There is not much, but I can tell you that we are shooting, that it is the biggest of all of them and that it is going incredibly well. The movie takes place in the future and past — so you get two actors playing the same role, except for mine because I am greedy! That will happen someday, I know, because big parts always outlive the actors that play them. If you do stick around to the end of the credits on The Wolverine, you are going to get a glimpse.


Do you think if Clint Eastwood were in his 40s now, he’d have a superhero franchise?

He sort of had one with Dirty Harry, didn’t he, though he was human? There weren’t many franchises around like that apart from James Bond. Probably. I remember shooting X-Men 1. It is fascinating how it’s changed. Bryan Singer would not allow one comic book on the set. He was terrified that actors would read them and come with over-the-top with two-dimensional performances. That was the perception of what comic books are, though X-Men is not like that at all. It is sophisticated in its themes and political in what it is trying to say. But that’s what Bryan worried about back then, so it is a very different world now. There was no genre when the first X-Men was made and you have to give credit to Bryan and to [20th Century] Fox for taking that risk.

Have you seen any discernible difference in Bryan Singer when making Days of Future Past?

All of us are different but essentially I see in him all that brilliance and confidence and then some. It seems to me that he has made a lot of different movies. He has reached among the fan base a kind of iconic status because of what he has created. I think he is really enjoying the challenge of this film. I know it is a big challenge and he doesn’t take it lightly. He really is absolutely delivering. I think that this going to be right up there.

Did he allow comic books on set this time?

Yes. He is not so worried about that any more.

It took a while for The Wolverine to settle on a director and script, with Darren Aronofsky attached at one point. Did that affect you at all?

Darren was on it for like six months and then we had to find a new director. The script we have now is pretty much what Darren was going to make. It wasn’t that different. He had a couple of great ideas including the title. He said he would only do it if it were called The Wolverine. And the studio said that was a great idea. I told him, ‘we are nicking that idea!’ There are a couple more ideas we nicked. I am pretty sure if I remember rightly that whole beginning in Nagasaki was his idea. There was a scene in the past, in the original script where Logan met a fire-fighter. They actually met in a pit. They were both trapped and they sort of fought each other but I think this was a much stronger, very iconic opening and I am pretty sure, if I remember rightly, that was Darren’s idea. Until we had Jim on board it was more difficult.

How do you keep your own rage and frustration under control?

I think that playing Wolverine gets a hell of a lot of it out! I can’t remember the last time I felt that kind of rage. Obviously, when I was younger, 13 or 14, I felt it all the time. Basically, every time I played rugby I felt it. I was much angrier as a kid, like most of us, but I don’t feel it much now. That’s why kids actually relate to X-Men and Wolverine and things like that because they feel unheard, misunderstood, they have no power, everyone is telling them what to do; they’re body is changing, their hormones are flying around and they don’t understand it all. That often comes out as rage.

So who did you relate to when you were growing up?

For me, growing up it was Dirty Harry and Mad Max. To be honest, they’re very Wolverine-like archetypes. Indiana Jones was my hero if I was thinking about a character I would like to play. I loved those kinds of characters.

Who are Hollywood's biggest stars... when they're stripped of their superpowers?

In the current era of The Avengers and Batman Vs. Superman, it’s impossible to be a fan of the comic-book genre and not have a well-considered argument to the question, “Who’s the Most Powerful Superhero?” Superman, of course, is the most obvious answer in any superpower battle-royale debate, but there are strong and more interesting claims to be made for the others, too. (Except Hawkeye. Sorry, guy.)

In Hollywood offices, there are similar conversations going on all the time about their own legion of superheroes, those famous actors and actresses who can open a movie in New York, Nebraska, and Nepal, whether it be a romance, an action-adventure, or a raunchy comedy. But with more and more of the industry now tilted towards Comic-Con-approved tent-pole pictures, the pecking order for actors today is heavily weighted by his or her ability to land a major role in a superhero franchise. It is the lifeblood of a long and prosperous career. For example, playing Batman not only elevated Christian Bale to the Hollywood A-list — positioning the indie actor for other major studio movie roles — but his enhanced financial security allowed him to continue to gamble on the eclectic roles he preferred in the first place, in movies like The Fighter and Rescue Dawn.

When the right actor gets the right superhero role, it becomes virtually impossible to separate the artist from the character. The cape becomes part of their public persona, one that can help or hinder their other on-screen roles. But what happens when Hollywood’s heroes are stripped of their superpowers? That is to say, what is Robert Downey Jr. without Tony Stark’s armor? What is Hugh Jackman when his Wolverine claws are clipped? Do we still pay to see their movies, or do we give them the cold-shoulder, like old-school Lois Lane used to give old-school Clark Kent? Who is the most powerful superstar when they’re nothing more or less than their Hollywood alter ego?

After looking at the actors and actresses who are major players in current comic-book franchises, we examined their recent box-office and critical reputation when they’re not in costume, and then ranked them in order to see who really flies the highest and has the biggest muscles in the movie universe.

6. Chris Hemsworth, 30 (Thor)

Looking like a Norse god has its privileges. Since bringing Thor to life, Hemsworth has seen his prospects soar. He was the secret weapon in Snow White and the Huntsman, so much so that if and when there’s a sequel, his character might be its centerpiece. Michael Mann cast him as the lead of his next movie, Cyber, and Ron Howard has him lined up to star in his next big movie, a seafaring adventure called In the Heart of the Sea. They worked together on Rush, which in two years will be either seen as a baffling outlier or the canary in the coal mine. In that Formula 1 drama, Hemsworth played a charismatic race-car driver who was larger than life. It was a total “Tom Cruise” role, and the critics even gave the film their stamp of approval. Yet it grossed less than $30 million. If you love Chris Hemsworth but won’t pay to see him in Rush, that might be a problem.

5. Michael Fassbender, 36 (Magneto)

The German-born Irishman is on the brink of full-blown Goslingness. Both men have legions of fans, especially on the internet, they’re mentioned for most every major franchise and tent-pole, they’re critical darlings who tackle bold and unusual roles, and their elusiveness only makes us love them more. Fassbender, at least, lends his prestige to comic-book epics, sci-fi reboots like Prometheus, and perhaps videogame adaptations, like Assassin’s Creed, which he’s long been attached to. The Counselor may have turned out to be a whiff despite its star-power, but its disappointing grosses can be blamed on it simply being a bad movie. Fassbender is still a name that makes every project he’s involved with… cool.

4. Ben Affleck, 41 (Batman)

Welcome back to the caped club, Mr. Affleck. Though he’s yet to play Batman, he’s familiar with the superhero terrain, playing Daredevil 10 years ago. Recently, though — you may have heard — he directed himself in a movie that won the Oscar for Best Picture, Argo. Not long before that, he directed himself in The Town, another critical and box-office hit. Part of the reason some people were surprised that Affleck accepted the role of Batman was simply that he didn’t need it. He’s an Oscar-winning filmmaker he can get his own movies made within the studios, and he’s currently filming Gone Girl with David Fincher. But no one is bulletproof… I give you Runner Runner, the October thriller with Justin Timberlake that sank quickly at the box office. If Batman Vs. Superman is even half as good as fans hope, though, there’s bound to be a Batman-bump that raises the opening-weekend profile of all Affleck’s upcoming movies.

3. Robert Downey Jr., 48 (Iron Man)

There’s a solid argument that Downey is the biggest star in the world right now, and no one has made greater use of his opportunity to play a superhero to leverage — and revitalize — his career. Before Iron Man, Downey was a giant question mark. Today, he’s one of the most reliable stars in Hollywood. Not only is he Tony Stark, but he’s also Sherlock Holmes. A downside of such spectacular recent success is that he’s played those two iconic characters in five of his last six films. In between, he mixed in a solid comedy, Due Date, but 2014 is shaping up to be a true test of whether we love Robert as much as we love Tony: he has Chef, with Scarlett Johansson, and The Judge, with an all-star cast that includes Robert Duvall. It will be interesting and perhaps refreshing to see Downey shed his armor and elementary wit for a change.

2. Hugh Jackman, 45 (Wolverine)

There was a time when if you stripped Wolverine away from Jackman’s resume, the results were not so pretty. But 13 years after being fitted for the claws, the Aussie not only seems more comfortable as that character, he seems much more confident with his non-X career as well. Les Misérables was an instant career highlight, and his powerful performance in this fall’s Prisoners might develop into an Oscar dark-horse. While others can’t hide the fact that making movies is hard, laborious work, Jackman makes it all seem like fun. People love him, their mothers love him, and he can pull even middling material — like Real Steel — into the black. There was a time when he was going to be the next Bond. (He apparently turned it down.) Well, Daniel Craig seems to have 007 well in hand, which is good because they couldn’t afford Jackman now anyway.

1. Jennifer Lawrence, 23 (Mystique)

You can be sure that Mystique will play a major role in all the upcoming X-Men: First Class sequels. After all, they’re not going to let Blue Katniss go to waste! Clearly, it’s the Hunger Games that helps elevate Lawrence to the top of this list. It will soon be a billion-dollar property, and it rests on its star’s shoulders more than just about any other giant franchise. Throw in her Oscar-winning role in Silver Linings Playbook, and Lawrence is poised to rule Hollywood like no other actress since… uh… um… have we ever had someone like her? Lawrence can literally do anything, as evidenced by her upcoming cameo in the Dumb and Dumber sequel. Take away her Mystique mystique, and she’s still Hollywood’s biggest star.

Hugh's trifecta success in the last 12 months seemed to have really created a very strong impression on his versatility and box office winnability.

I wonder if DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will finally be the XMEN franchise's first really superhit -- maybe a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, if the movie has the top two superheroes in its cast (per the above article)?

No mention is made of Hugh's stage career. Will his involvement on Broadway, if protracted, affect his box office appeal in Hollywood advsersely? But Hugh is much more savvy now in balancing his film and stage career and even in the type of movies he does.

Didn't Fukuyama (where they filmed the scenes outside Tokyo) give Hugh honorary or special ambassador honors after the filming, if I recall right?

I wonder if Hugh will be in Tokyo for a possible premiere for DOFP near that date?


EDIT: It seems that when Hugh was given tourism ambassador honors of Fukuyama that he had been told that a special rose will be named for Wolverine. Fukuyama is known as the City of Roses. But has the rose already been grown or will its first blooms be seen only this May?

Fox Home Entertainment turned the superhero sequel into one of its strongest performing titles by utilizing Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment picked up a Shorty Award recently for Best Social Media Campaign for its work harnessing Twitter, Facebook and other digital platforms to make “The Wolverine” one of its strongest performing titles.

Fox's victory shows how flexible and novel studios have become at using tweets, likes and shares to their advantage to inject new life into a home entertainment sector that was hit hard by the move of customers away from physical discs to streaming video.


In the case of “The Wolverine,” Fox spent six weeks rolling out a specially designed “Declassified” campaign that teased out recently-unearthed documents about the clawed hero's mysterious origins and 165 year history of slicing, dicing and being a general bad ass.

From there, the film's more than 3 million Facebook fans shared various conspiracy theories, rumors and folk lore related to the mutant vigilante.

wolverineIt was the home entertainment unit's most comprehensive marketing campaign around a digital release. It involved cross promotions with the likes of McDonald's, Xbox and Apple, as well as partnering with director James Mangold and Hugh Jackman.

Jackman took over iTunes’ Twitter account on the film's digital release date to stump for it, becoming a trending sensation. The film was a pioneer in another way by becoming the first major home entertainment campaign to utilize photo messaging service, SnapChat.



The result was the studio's most successful digital release to date. Fox has aggressively embraced digital sales of its films, becoming one of the first of the major Hollywood players to begin offering its films for sale on iTunes and other online retailers two weeks or more before DVDs and Blu-rays hit store shelves.

To win this honor, Fox was pitted against the social media campaigns for the theatrical releases of “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” “The Purge” and the Bollywood hit “Chennai Express.”

The Shorty Awards recognize social media campaigns in a variety of fields and industries, ranging from art and design to green activism.

NEW YORK – Action star Hugh Jackman has worn the metal claws of “The Wolverine” way more times than Robert Downey Jr. has donned his Iron Man armor, but Jackman tells FOX411 he’s having “more fun now than ever.” This summer’s “Wolverine” installment, set in Japan, brings in new villains as well as some familiar faces from X-Men past. We sat down with Jackman to ask him about his diet, workout routine, and how those claws really work.

FOX 411: What do you like the most about the new “Wolverine”?

Hugh Jackman: The Samurai story that took place in Japan, I’ve been dying to make. I’ve had it in my head in some way shape or form, and when I got in with Jim Mangold he said, “Hugh I see this is as ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales,’ a great Eastwood movie.” And tonally it was different, fresh. I feel like we got closer to the comic book character and I’m really proud of that.

FOX411: The fight scenes are different this time around, what does that entail?

Jackman: You have to train for weeks. The physical training just to get into that shape, which is months or years in this case. Then it’s intense, the eating, and then martial arts training probably for a couple hours a day. That built in with the stunt work it’s very very physical. I used to get out of bed 4 o’clock in the morning and I’d be to [wy wife] Deb complaining, typical man… life is so hard, I gotta train… and by this point she’s like, you love it, get out of bed.

Fox 411: “Wolverine” is your workout routine, right?

Jackman: Trust me I would never be in this shape, not in a million years. There’s no way I’m waking up and working out for three hours a day unless I was getting to play this part, but it’s a great motivation. All you have to do is open up one comic book and say “Oh, gotta go to the gym!”

Fox 411: What’s your cheat meal then, the first thing you have when they say wrap?

Jackman: Burger with everything, fries, chocolate shake. And it’s got to be good. That’s the first thing I have. I follow it up with some lasanga some chocolate fudge of some kind and then about 11 o’clock at night a massive bowl of cereal could be anything, granola, all this stuff I’m not allowed. Simple stuff. Alcohol, beer, wine, yes lots of stuff.

Fox 411: You’ve played this role six, going on seven times more than any other actor who’s done a super hero. What does that mean to you?

Jackman: It means I didn’t get the memo that I was meant to move on (laughs). It means a lot, in all seriousness, I love this part. I’ve been around long enough in this business to know great parts like this don’t come along very often and as long as the part continues to grow and the reason for doing is there and that continues to grow ,and let’s face it, that the audience still wants to see it, I don’t see any reason to give it up. I’m having more fun now than ever.

Fox 411: What’s the number one fan question that you get asked about “Wolverine”?

Jackman: The claws. How do the claws work, and that’s really quite simple. They’re always like, oh that’s it? It’d be like telling a magic trick. That’s the number one thing, particularly kids want to know: how do you make those claws work?

Jackman: It’s very simple — it’s a little rubber thing with wire connected to it and the claws fit in. Bang.

I don't think I have seen this -- it is a long twitter exchange ( via Amazon.com movies) between Jim Mangold and fans re THE WOLVERINE. Some interesting insights and in some ways an indication of how he likes to create a superhero movie. It looks like he started working on the idea of a second sequel ( Wolverine 3) soon thereafter!

What about working on Wolverine. Any memorable moments there?

Wolverine was awesome. I mean, we shot most of the movie in Australia and then we went to Japan for a few weeks. And I think the most memorable moments were in Japan because you're kind of in this new world and were shooting in these different places. And the amount of translation that has to happen for one scene to be executed is unbelievable. So you'll have a matching Japanese crew and an American or English crew. Like, okay, you're going to shoot the guy in the chest. And in order for that one direction to be executed, it has to go through so many different people. The Japanese guys tell him to get the CG arrows, and lighting has to tell him... That was always fascinating to me.


And then the other memorable part was Hugh Jackman, every Friday, no matter what country we were in, he went and got thousands of lottery tickets and he made sure every single crew and cast got a lottery ticket. And that was always the fun thing on Fridays. You would just see him running around saying, "Here, here, you take one, and you take one!" My wife was on set and he's like, "Come here, you take one." And so that was always the fun part of Hugh, he made things fun like that.

One of Hugh's physically-difficult stunts. When he came home early from filming, he had to admit to Deb that he had an accident while filming ( head bump?) on the train scene. Deb was not happy about that.
