From an interview by Mike Fleming with Bryan Singer ( BS), it seems that his first meeting with Hugh at ComicCon was just coincidental?? Was that the reason for the awkwardness during the panel session? www.thestatesman.com/news/voices/wait-till-you-see-x-men-apocalypse/76308.htmlWill ever know what happened behind the scenes about Hugh's non-presence in APOCALYPSE (save for a possible cameo)?

I wish. Also wish for "real story" behind Collateral Beauty departure. Who knows; time may tell. Will ever know what happened behind the scenes about Hugh's non-presence in APOCALYPSE (save for a possible cameo)?

This is pure speculation on my part I think the preparation needed for Wolverine 3 is a good part of it. It is likely that Collateral Beauty is slated to film in New York City till early to mid-December because of the time and setting of the storyline ...and that would be fairly close to the time needed by Hugh to prepare for Wolverine 3 ( at the moment due to start filming in early 2016). Given his more recent health issues, it is possible that he would like to take a longer period to do his Wolverine muscle buildup compared to his past experience (when he was younger and did not have health concerns). I do remember the time when Hugh did back-to- back filming for Australia and Origins:Wolverine. He worked on his Wolverine requirements when he was filming Australia (Baz used to complain that he was practically bursting out of his costumes towards the end )... Deb insisted that he take a long break after filming Origins. When he filmed Les Miserables, he was also building up for his The Wolverine requirements...which filming was immediately followed by Prisoners and not long after, by Days of Future Past. Before Les Miserables, he was on Broadway for Back on Broadway. That extended punishing schedule might have had a telling effect on his health. Remember that the first sign of his skin cancer problem showed up while filming DOFP? It is also possible that he may have to take a more intensive and an extended time to promote PAN. It is the general impression that PAN has not yet created a strong buzz so it can become a universal box office hit. There is some negativity besieging the movie ( issues of racism, issues of reboot, issues of comparison with other previous Peter Pan productions). PAN is due for release on September 24 in Australia, October 9 in the USA, October 16 in the UK - key cities for the publicity campaign. Given the media impression that it is Hugh's spectacular Blackbeard turn that may work the most to attract movie audiences and given how well-regarded Hugh is when it comes to media junkets, he may be slated to do a fairly back-breaking promotional period for the movie. Also, they may want to cover more worldwide cities in the campaign. Warner is keen to see the movie succeed very well -- *they want to test if it could be the start of a series of movies on the subject, maybe not as huge as other franchises. *the production budget is rumored at $ 150 million and they would be keen to see the movie do very well overall. Or there could be other reasons? Who knows? I find the XMEN issue more intriguing than the Collateral Beauty departure Jo

Over the years, Hugh has had to drop out of film projects where he has been officially announced. In the theatre, there were also a few where he had participated in readings/workshops which never came to pass.
*HOUDINI was the most protracted. His name was attached in late 2008 or early 2009 and I do remember that when we asked him at the stagedoor as to its progress when he was doing A STEADY RAIN, he said categorically : "It is being rewritten ". It was only in 2014 when he finally dissociated himself from the project. But he did readings in the interim.
*He dropped out of PRISONERS the first time around. He initially told people at the Schonfeld that he was going to start filming in Connecticut right after Steady Rain ( late 2009). The project was shopped around for a new lead ( DiCaprio, Bale, Wahlberg, etc) and eventually landed a new director ( Villeneuve). By 2012, Hugh was back in the project, filming it while he went back to LA or the East Coast for the weekends to promote Les Miserables during the awards season.
*I do remember other film projects like the SEED projects. He dropped out of DRIVE and the role went to Ryan Gosling. CAROUSEL seemed on the road to a greenlight( the script has been contemporized, the script had been sent to a director for a possible offer, and there was even buzz that Hugh may want Anne Hathaway in the remake). But even if Fox Features agreed to look at it, it never got a greenlight. There was the project based on the book by Cecilia Ahern, where he would have played a whimsical character ( IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW ). Another one was supposed to be another spy thriller ( THE AMATEUR).
*He was also announced to be attached to a serious drama where he would have played a German intellectual who worked with the Nazis called GOOD ("The project was all set to shoot. Hugh Jackman was to star as John Halder, the intellectual swept up in Hitler's rise to power. Isaacs was cast as Halder's Jewish psychoanalyst friend, Maurice." ) but that didn't happen because of funding issues. It would probably have been a controversial movie ( it was based on a celebrated British play by CP Taylor) but that could have been a highly dramatic indie ( I had a chance to read the play)...Instead, during that summer he switched to Woody Allen's Scoop.
*I also remember one project based on a graphic novel where he agreed to co-star with Jennifer Garner, about a couple who were spies in the shade of James Bond ( although it was more caper than spy) called THREE DAYS IN EUROPE. But that didn't push through -- I wonder if his feature role in Butter was to make good the promise to do something with Jennifer, albeit in a much smaller role.
*In the theatre, he was about to do a workshop with Kelli O'Hara for LEAP OF FAITH ( I understand that Hugh had been involved in reviewing the book of the musical). The role went to Raul Esparza when Hugh dropped out. He also did a first reading with Mike Nichols of a new play about the journalist McAlary. When the play came to Broadway, it was called LUCKY MAN and had Tom Hanks in the lead. He also did a reading with Kristin Chenoweth for ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY...but he did not accept the role ( it went to Peter Gallagher instead) and he went on to do The River.
*He has also been announced for a project called SIX YEARS, based on a book by Harlan Corben. Nothing has been heard about it to-date.

Thanks for these detailed insights and chronology, Jo! I also remember reading about him being attached to a Lee Daniels film which didnt happen. I was always wishing to hear more about the Six Years project--it sounded intriguing; but I guess such is the nature of the business.

Yes, that was supposed to be " SELMA" - he was supposed to play a feature role, James Clark, the controversial sheriff who clashed with the marchers at Selma.
I have read SIX YEARS and I was trying to imagine Hugh in the role of the academic who lost his wife/lover...until a mysterious occurrence happened. No idea whatever happened to that one.
Also, we still have to hear when filming will actually start for another long-gestating Hugh Jackman passion project - Greatest Showman on Earth.

Last news I've seen of it was this THR report from May that Paramount had relinquished the rights to it at some point, so it's apparently without a studio at the moment. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/rights-available-5-hot-new-793544

Thanks!
It's still on the IMDB-Pro listing of future projects, but since one of the original producers was supposed to have been Tom Rothman ( who has now become President/CEO of SONY Pictures), maybe that is one of the reasons why the project is no longer under Paramount's wing.

Much clearer upload of what happened at the ComicCon panel, including Jen Lawrence's obvious delight at letting Hugh sit on her lap ( as well as her comments on how awkward the situation was getting) and some of Bryan Singer's obvious discomfort of the situation --

But...isn't he reportedly in the midst of rehearsals for B'WAY TO OZ? I wonder if his role is just a short cameo that can be filmed in a day or two.

Hugh seems to be in intensive training these days -- for WOLVERINE 3. http://instagr.am/p/9qw_zNChDw This will be perfect timing if he is really involved in a brief appearance in APOCALYPSE, as he will be Wolverine-ready by January ( when they do the reshoots in Montreal).

This was posted by someone on Instagram today -- http://instagram.com/p/9s1EoqrzhR Is this an old or a current photo? If it is current ( and he does not shave for this shows), then he is getting ready for WOLVERINE 3 and possibly APOCALYPSE ? Jo
