Pan’ “Adventure” Trailer – Never Grow Up, Just Reboot

As those of us in San Diego saw on Saturday, Pan, the upcoming Peter Pan/Captain Hook origin story that tells of how the boy who flies came to Neverland, is an interesting and surprising thing. Public domain properties are ripe for turning into franchises, ill-thought-out or otherwise (go ask Disney’s Alice In Wonderland), and at first glance this seemed to be one of the former. But then the footage of Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard was shown — hammy, overwrought, theatrical and campy, it did more to sell me on this film than a thousand sizzle reels. It also made the sizzle stuff a lot more fun. Maybe you’ll agree, and here’s your chance to see a bit more of the movie.

From Warner Bros., Pan is directed by Joe Wright from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. In addition to Jackman, it stars Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, Levi Miller as Peter; and Amanda Seyfried. It hits theaters October 9, 2015.

Don't read the readers' reactions -- too much cynicism for a movie that is not clearly intended for them -- it ain't for fanboys, as this tale was never inspired by the comic books -- only from one of the most respected literature sources, from author James Barrie! And for the male audience among whose boyhood heroes included a kid who only wanted to fly and not grow up. Plus it is really meant for the younger 'uns whose wide-eyed wonder will likely be fired up even more once they see the movie. And probably enchant the parents or elder brother/sister who may have to take them to the date with Peter Pan smiley-happy082

It’s an unwritten rule of fantasy film-making that if you can’t make a great movie, at least make one that’s utterly outlandish. This is why, for all their failings, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful, with their giant-headed queens, excitable talking animals and gorgeous warring witches, will always be remembered more fondly than furrow-browed Angelina Jolie-vehicle Maleficent, or any of the distinctly po-faced Narnia films.

If the 20 minutes or so of footage shown to journalists and bloggers in London earlier today is anything to go by, Joe Wright’s Pan won’t want for bombastic nuttiness. One particular scene in which the newly-arrived Lost Boys are serenaded by the villainous Blackbeard to a chorus of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit came so far out of the leftfield that it’s hard to gauge in isolation whether the moment is a curveball of anarchic genius or a pop culture horrorshow.


When the unfortunate orphans of an Oliver-style home for poor little urchins are whisked off to Neverland, it is via giant mechanical grabbers piloted by maniacally cackling pirates who rip away the roof in an orgy of bonkers CGI and wrench the kiddies from their beds. “Bye bye Peter!” screams a hideously made-up Kathy Burke as an orderly who is clearly in league with the terrifying childsnatchers. In such macabre moments, Wright hints at a promising fondness for fiendish, Roald Dahl-style humour, as well as a taste for Terry Gilliam’s vivid and extravagant fantasy odysseys. “It’s quite a mischievous, anarchic film,” said the British director following the footage screening. “It’s unlike a lot of American films, it’s very open-hearted … I envisaged the film being created in Peter’s imagination.”


Wright and his team have gone to town on the revisionist furniture for a movie which aims to tell the story of how Hook and the Lost Boys got to Neverland in the first place. There’s a not-so subtle “chosen one” motif, apparently purloined wholesale from the Harry Potter books, surrounding Levi Miller’s cheery orphan Peter, and we get to find out what he did to deserve the title “Pan”. Much is made, naturally, of the importance of the new arrival proving himself to the locals through an exhibition of flying skills, a display of magical abilities that the young boy is not yet entirely convinced he can pull off.



Blackbeard himself, played with pantomime gusto by a receding-hair-bewigged Hugh Jackman – his look recalling Helena Bonham Carter’s similar appearance in Alice – is the main baddie here. So what of Captain Hook, Peter’s traditional nemesis? Well he’s been retooled as plain old James Hook, a swashbuckling adventurer whose sole purpose seems to be to raise Garrett Hedlund’s chances of being cast as the new Indiana Jones. It’s not clear if the fedora-sporting character’s 30s-style costume is deliberately intended to jar with the late 19th century threads worn by the Lost Boys and Peter, but JM Barrie’s Neverland always was a hotchpotch of childhood fantasies, from pirates to “red indians” and fairies, so Wright can perhaps be forgiven a few flights of fancy.


Pan has come under fire for casting white actor Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, who in Barrie’s books is described as a Native American princess of a “Piccaninny tribe”, and there was little in the footage to suggest that accusations of “redface” and “whitewashing” are unfounded. Though Rooney’s version speaks in plummy English tones and has spectacular psychedelic headware, her feather-adorned outfit is unmistakable in influence. The simple casting of an actor of Native American origin would have made more sense, though at least this time there are no dancing braves singing songs about “What Made the Red Man Red”, à la the pretty offensive sequence in the 1953 Disney animated Peter Pan film.

Pan, based on a screenplay by Jason Fuchs, is due for release in US cinemas on 9 October 9 and hits the UK on 16 October. On this evidence, Warner could well have another fantasy fairytale hit on its hands, provided it can steer this particular pirate ship well clear of the treacherous rocks of controversy.

Pan director Joe Wright followed up his Comic-Con appearance by unveiling his first foray into blockbuster-scale movie-making to a UK audience, revealing an ambitious new take on an well-known story. Not that he was as daunted by Peter Pans that had gone before as he was by “taking on a film with this scale and using CGI, which I’ve never done before,” he admitted.

Wright described Pan as “a love letter” to the source material rather than an adaptation.


The footage didn’t only confirm its prequel-ish origin-story approach (how Peter — newcomer Levi Miller — gets to Neverland; how Hook — Garrett Hedlund — becomes, er, Hook), it also showed his twists on the tale: setting it during World War Two (flying galleons versus Spitfires!), getting Hugh Jackman to push himself to new dark and crazy places as bad-guy Blackbeard, feeding in contemporary elements (the Lost Boys — or Lost-Boys-to-be — singing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'), and bringing his own bold, colourful style to the spectacle (one fight scene takes place on a huge trampoline).

“It’s a world as envisaged by a boy,” Wright explained of his unique aesthetic. “A pre-pubescent boy, so it’s not about all that teenage cool. I tried very hard not to make anything cool!” At the same time, he rooted everything in real-world locations, like Mexican crystal caves, Vietnam, the jungles of the Congo, which, he said, “we could then exaggerate.”

As to why a serious, grown-up filmmaker would want to take on a famliy film, he cited his own son as an inspiration, while half-apologetically adding that in making it he discovered his “own inner child.” Yet, he adds, “it’s quite a mischievous film. There’s quite a lot of silliness that will appeal to adults. It’s quite anarchic, it’s quite open-hearted. With a bit of Nirvana in it… for the dads!”

I haven't read AICN ( Ain't it Cool News) for sometime now. I used to read it more for superhero movie reactions (and occasional other movies such as Les Mis!)... It's the readers comments which can border on the outrageous but very interesting and show a different kind of humor. Some people hate that site...while others like its cheekiness.

Still outrageous, still with a sly sense of humor, but at least NOT in the same tone of those who cry "Flop!" or "Unnecessary reboot!" or "Why is Tiger Lily white?".

This is honestly my type of movie. A fun, visually imaginative swashbuckling fantasy/pirate adventure story. I'll happily forgive the annoying return of the Chosen One trope, if it is an otherwise solid ride. And Hugh Jackman looks delightfully OTT. Very much looking forward to this.

Interesting that in many of the feedback sections of film sites, Hugh's over the top portrayal is a source of wonder and admiration for its campiness and an exciting turn for Jackman.

Director Joe Wright's vision of Peter Pan looks absolutely wonderful. We have a new trailer for you to watch today offering us lots of new footage to enjoy. While we were at Comic-Con, we got a chance to see some additional footage from Pan, and the stuff I saw was absolutely stunning. Not just in the visual sense either. Yeah, the film looks great, but the performances from the actors are incredible, especially from the two lead stars: Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard the Pirate and Levi Miller as Peter Pan. You'll get a taste of what they bring to the movie in this latest trailer. Jackman is going to steal the show though. You can watch the cast and crew talk about their magical adventure at the Comic-Con panel right here.

Peter is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly. Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land. Teamed with the warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and a new friend named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard to save Neverland and discover his true destiny—to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.

This morning in central London, we were treated to around 15 minutes of new footage from director Joe Wright’s upcoming fantasy/adventure, Pan. The film, which stars Hugh Jackman as the movie’s lead villain Blackbeard, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lilly, Garrett Hedlund as Hook and newcomer Levi Miller as Peter, arrives in cinemas in October.


When Joe Wright‘s Pan was announced, I must admit to being one of those who rolled his eyes at the thought of a new re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale. In the very near past we’ve had the likes of Peter Pan (2003), Finding Neverland, and even last year’s TV special Peter Pan Live on our screens, and it seems too soon to take a trip back. Does the world need another movie? It is very clear from the footage that Warner Bros. showed off this morning that director Joe Wright and his team are going after a very different retelling of the tale with writer Jason Fuchs focussing his attention on the young Pan, and his journey to Neverland with a much younger Hook (Hedlund, who seems to be channelling Dustin Hoffman‘s voice in the scenes we saw) to find out what happened to his mother.

My initial opinion could be swayed.

We don’t want to comment too much on the footage we saw – it felt like we’ve seen the whole movie condensed down to the fifteen minutes – but we will say that it does looks very impressive – colourful, extremely grand, and very different to what we’ve seen before.

That said, we have a bunch of things that we learned from the 20-minute Q+A with director Joe Wright, and co-producer Paul Webster that we attended after this morning’s footage screening.


•Wright revealed that it was daunting taking on a film of this scale having not done a film containing as much CGI before.

•The script was so strong, and such a love-letter to Peter Pan and the original source material.

•Didn’t have to worry about re-hashing anything that has come before. It’s such an original script.

•Wright said that he looked back at the book before making the movie and glanced at the other movies that have been adapted from it – if only to see what he “didn’t want to do” with his version of Barrie’s classic.

•The book has a strange atmosphere which he tried to bring to the way he told the story.

•Wright sees the film as being created inside Peter’s imagination; a pre-pubescent boy and not through a boy with ‘teenage cool.’ He tried not to be cool when making the film. Everything in the film had to be based on something that exists on ‘our beautiful planet.’ Wright and his team researched the Crystal Caves in Mexico, and the landscaping in Vietnam (where they shot lots of plates) so that everything had a rod back into our world.

•With the costumes it very similar – it was about finding references that they could then exaggerate for Neverland.

•Producer Webster revealed that they had huge confidence in the script and Joe’s imagination on the film. Warner Brothers brought so much to the table with a team that knew how to work on such a huge scale. A lot of the crew on Pan have worked together on Wight’s movies for years.

•The Pan set was apparently the biggest set anyone who worked on the film had ever seen. Both pirate ships seen in the movie were built for real at life-size scale.

•There were five art directors and two cinematographers on the movie.

•The film is still being converted to 3D. Wright revealed that he had to think about shooting with a view to the film being converted to 3D afterwards. He said that he couldn’t do ‘over-shoulder’ shots as they don’t work as well in 3D. They did have moments where they could play around with 3D and create different shots to complement the ‘third dimension.’

•Wright revealed that he likes 3D if it’s done well and not an after thought. Chris Parks who did the 3D conversion on Gravity is handling the conversion on Pan. Although it isn’t finished, he says it looks great so far.

•Wright also commented that he sees 3D as a format for children. The format relies on having two equally as strong eyes, which a lot of adults don’t have.

•It is the pair’s first family film. Wright says that he recently became a parent to a son who is desperately in love with his mother, and his mother with him. It is one of the reasons why he took on the film; to make a movie for him, and reference their love. Pan is essentially about a son looking for his mother.

•In regards talking to an adult audience? Wright says that it appeals to him. It’s anarchic, mischievous, very different to American kids films, very open-hearted and even has a bit of Nirvana in it (Wright is referencing one of the scenes in which we saw which sees the population of Neverland chanting the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit to the arrival of Blackbeard in a flying ship).

•Levi Miller, who makes his debut as Peter in the film, was the the result of a global search for the title character. Thousands of tapes were submitted, as was Miller’s from Australia. His tape showed Miller’s openness and wonder, and on top of that he was a great actor. It compared finding Miller to finding Saorise Ronan when he made Atonement back in 2007.

•It is Miller’s first film, but other than the limited working hours that any child actor can do, he said that there were no issues with directing him and the rest of the children in the movie. With children, there comes no ego.

•There were three weeks of rehearsals on the film where all of the actors got to know one-another so that they all felt comfortable. Miller apparently called Hugh Jackman Mr. Jackman for the first week. Miller also adored working with Garrett Hedlund and had ‘a crush’ on Rooney Mara.

•Jackman worked really hard as Blackbeard and because he had a background in theatre was totally prepared for the role. He was playful as the villain of the piece and a real company leader. Wright said that he tried to find a dark side in Jackman, but couldn’t find it. He revealed that Jackman used to walk around the set every Friday with 400 lottery scratch cards and hand them out to the crew. He also would not leave the set – he would always be there doing his own thing.

•The character of Blackbeard is really dark, but at certain points in the film the audience will sympathise with him.

•Wright said that the most challenging thing to shoot was the battle between the two flying pirate ships in the movie, which took five weeks to shoot.

•Wright said that he made the film completely independent of whether there was any intention to make any further sequels.

Pan opens on October 9th in the US and October 16th in the UK.

The latest trailer for Hugh Jackman’s new film Pan has dropped and it’s promising to be a seriously inventive prequel to Peter Pan.

As well as giving us a glimpse of Jackman playing the villainous Blackbeard, the trailer also shows Garrett Hedlund as a younger version of Hook.

Fans of the books or other film versions will know what happens later on it the Peter Pan story, but this film by Atonement director Joe Wright explores how the characters got there.

We were exclusively treated to an additional 15 minutes of footage today and if you thought the trailer was over the top, wait until you see the rest!

Initially, I did not associate the voice with her, as I thought she usually has a higher-pitched speaking voice when interviewed ( and she is classified as a soprano when singing) but upon listening to the clip a few more times, it does sound like Amanda!

I hope she can join some of the media junkets with Hugh et al.

JoMy first thought on hearing this were that it reminded me of Nicole Kidman's "Would you Like to hear a story ?" scene in Australia. The accent sounds similar to Lady Sarah Ashley.

In the first trailer, Amanda did have a British accent, when she was vocally portraying Peter's mother.

In the third trailer, she was not speaking with a Brit accent ( I could be wrong) and her voice was a little lower-pitched than her speaking voice in interviews.

I guess that makes her sound a little more husky, like Nicole
