Peter Pan has been riding a wave on TV and Broadway over the last few years, generating solid ratings and ticket sales. Now the film business, longer of process but bigger of scope, will make its first of the present-moment forays when “Pan,” an origin story from Warner Bros. and director Joe Wright, heads to theaters in October..

On Thursday, the studio took the wraps off the movie at a cozy event here with Wright and Aussie youngster Levi Miller, the newcomer who plays Peter. In a boutique downtown hotel, the studio showed footage from the film, which has high all-ages hopes, a kind of PG complement to the shared-universe ambitions of its DC Comics movies.

As written by Jason Fuchs, "Pan" centers on a young Peter circa 1940s London seeking his mother but caught up in adventures in Neverland. He teams with a young, still-benign Hook (Garrett Hedlund), comes up against the despotic Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman, seeming to have great non-Wolverine fun), and encounters an indigenous world keyed by Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara).



The footage — about 20 minutes of scenes throughout the movie — revealed the scope you’d expect from an undertaking of this sort. Wright in many spots eschewed CG effects in favor of practical sets, and it lends the film both a tangible texture and a throwback feel. Among those scenes are a flying-ship sequence with Peter and Hook, a plank-side sword battle between Blackbeard and Tiger Lily, and a trampoline-enhanced fight involving the whole crew.

For Wright, best known for high-toned literary adaptations such as “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement,” the big-budget canvas was a switch — of a sort.

“One tries not to let it feel too different,” he said in an interview with The Times after the footage screened. “The challenge was to make a big action-adventure but give it an emotional heartbeat. I wanted to make a film that bore witness to the love of a mother and child.”

He added that he didn't see scope and a fine sense of authorship as incompatible. "You look at the early Spielberg movies, 'E.T.' and 'Close Encounters' and those movies, and they were entertainment for the whole family. But they were also very personal films."


Warners hopes "Pan," based of course on characters created by J.M. Barrie, taps into an all-ages adventure audience that Spielberg once owned. The studio isn't alone. After years of so much broad entertainment coming in the darker PG-13 vein, there's something of a PG resurgence happening this fall. Besides "Pan," the season will bring similarly targeted movies such as Robert Zemeckis' "The Walk" and the literary adaptation "Goosebumps."

The new "Pan" has been the subject of some Internet heat for its casting of Mara, a non-Native American, to play someone who is of that background in many of the adaptations.



Wright said he understood the concerns but that the actress made sense for a number of creative reasons. "The original source material is not specific. Barrie uses a few terms that are contradictory; it's only later adaptations that see her as Native American," Wright noted.

"Having said that, a Native American and entire community of Native Americans would have felt quite difficult; I think it might have seemed insensitive to have an entire community of warriors who were Native American. By making them indigenous people from around the world [instead] I was able to avoid that, and it also allowed me to bring in elements of world culture and world music from all over, which I really love."


He added that he hoped judgment would be rendered fully only in time. "I think one has to respect people's feelings and I completely understand people's concerns; I'm totally against casting whitewashing," he said. "But I'm confident that when people see the film they will understand the choice I made in the context of the film."

Incidentally, Wright said he considered casting an actress as Peter, as has been common in many of the theater renditions. "But then I realized it was just a bit gimmicky. Casting a woman as Peter works on stage — kind of — but it doesn't work on film. You wouldn't really believe it."

Wright, both in the interview and in a public talk after the footage, referenced Victorian pantomime, the 19th century live-theater British art form that saw the colorful reenactments of classic stories, as a reference point.

The director said the current vogue for Pan can't be chalked up to any one cultural factor — indeed, the combination of brand recognition and public domain probably doesn't hurt when it comes to studio greenlights — but wondered if certain sociological conditions played a role.


"We're living in some quite uncertain times," he said. "People are not as confident as they were in the recent past. I think they're looking for something that reminds them of when they felt safe. Peter Pan and even superhero movies are reminders of that. They speak to collective anxieties and make us feel better about them."

   He's also a southpaw LOL !!  Not sure that I agree about the Aussie accent. To me it's a cross between a cultured Aussie accent    and an "Eddie Redmayne" English accent, probably because he's been hanging around with Brits (Cara and Joe) during filming and promotion. However I'm sure it will revert once he's back in Oz long term.

Have you noticed that Hugh himself pronounces certain words like a Brit. Even in PAN, when he calls "Bishop!", that sounded so British ( BBC or the proper received pronunciation...definitely not Gavroche-cockney or north England sounds). Hugh also uses words that I usually hear only from Brit friends. Hugh, who also carries a British passport (on top of his Australian one) was raised by British parents, so the influence in the manner of speaking and culture must have had some British influence.

Levi is from Brisbane, but maybe he goes to a school similar to Hugh's Knox ( although Knox has a more Scottish orientation).

Levi's voice is breaking -- his voice is now slightly different from his PAN voice.

A jet-lagged Joe Wright made a stopover in Toronto last night to show off some footage from his soon to be released movie Pan. The director, whose previous projects include Hanna, Atonement, and Anna Karenina, talked about why he decided to take on the Peter Pan origin story (it had a lot more laughs in it than Anna Karenina), what it was like to cast the title character (“12-year-old boys are just weird.”), and where he drew inspiration from (Time Bandits and Indiana Jones). Here’s what we found out about life on the set of Pan:

1. The production built multiple, full-scale pirate ships for the film. The extra effort was worth it—the cast spent an entire month shooting on them. Wright clarified that they don’t actually fly, however, that part comes courtesy of the magic of green screen.

2. Hugh Jackman’s Blackbeard was inspired by Wright’s kids—specifically, their nightmares. Wright also chose Jackman for his experience on stage. He wanted an actor who could be over the top and theatrical. What he didn’t want was a method actor. “That would be a nightmare,” he quipped.

3. The movie is Levi Miller’s first acting gig. No big deal, he’s just playing the title character. “The film is very much on his shoulders,” says Wright. No pressure, kid.

4. Princess Tiger Lily and her tribe were inspired by indigenous peoples from across the globe. Wright thought that using Native Americans (an American take on the story that wasn’t specified in the original book) was “dodgy” so he instead cast people of many different ethnicities.

5. Blackbeard has a strange and terrifying addiction: to hand sanitizer, which seems to be plentiful in Neverland.

6. Captain Hook’s name was Hook long before he ever had a hook or became a captain. This isn’t only Peter’s origin story, it’s Hook’s too and though the pair became sworn enemies, they were once allies.

7. The best fighter in Neverland is a woman. Rooney Mara’s Tiger Lily can kick the butt of anyone on the island, including Hook. As a fighter, says Wright, the future most-feared man in Neverland is “rubbish.”

Warner Bros. hosted an intimate press gathering in New York on Thursday to reveal new footage of its upcoming movie “Pan,” a retelling of J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan story, starring Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara and Garrett Hedlund. Director Joe Wright and Australian newcomer Levi Miller, who plays Peter, met with reporters and spoke candidly about the film during a Q&A session. Five clips were shown as the presentation and boasted the movie’s action sequences, Jackman’s starring role, the emotional plot, comedic moments and a highly visual fight sequence.

“It’s a complete reframing of the myth and there’s lots of winks to those who know the story well, but overall it’s a reimagining of the original story,” Wright told the crowd at the Crosby Street Hotel. “I read the story as a kid and I went back to read the original source material and discovered to my surprise that it’s a lot richer and darker than I had imagined. There’s a strange psychological level to it as well and I wanted to include that in the film.”

“Pan” marks Wright’s first $100 million-plus big-budget Hollywood feature. He explained he had some reservations, but knew he was the right person to direct an action-adventure film. “With no track record in big-budget studio movies or family movies, it was daunting at first. The challenge I set myself was to make a film that fulfilled all the expectations of a big action-adventure movie and yet have a very strong, emotional core. I think it’s a misconception to think that films of this scale can’t be personal. So I tried to do that and was ready for the challenge.”

Wright immediately felt a connection with Jason Fuchs’ screenplay that focuses on an orphaned Peter searching for mother. “I have a [4-year-old] son, and my wife and I fell totally head over heels in love with him from the moment he was born. Every day I witness the passionate love between my wife and our son and then came along the ‘Pan’ script, which is about the love between a son and his mother,” he said. “Once I read the script I couldn’t put it down because I could connect emotionally. There’s this huge caravan that comes along with a film like this but at its core it’s love.”

One clip showed an emotional Peter living in an orphanage and discovering a letter his mother had once written to him promising to reunite with him some day. “I can relate to Peter because I love my mother a lot like him,” 12-year-old Miller told Variety. “I could understand his feelings and acting the sad scenes was sad for me too.”

Miller beat out thousands of kids around the world to portray Peter Pan. His favorite part of the role was tackling the stunt work. “Mastering all the stunts was a lot of fun,” said Miller, who enjoys indoor rock climbing and playing tennis during his free time. “But there were a couple that I hated. There was a lot of falling and being kicked. Doing the wirework was difficult because I wore this thing that was like a straitjacket, but it didn’t hold your arms and it always left these marks from the rubbing of it. That bit was difficult, but when I got up into the air it was pretty fun. ”

According to Wright, the “Pan” set was the largest ever to be built indoors in the U.K. Instead of relying heavily on CGI, many of the film’s sets were built at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios. Also the Neverland forest was created with hundreds of real trees and plants to give it an authentic look. Producer Sarah Schechter recalled the size of the set being a “couple of American football fields.”

Also at the presentation were the film’s costumes designed by Jacqueline Durran. On display were Tiger Lily’s inspired-by-punk rock, intricate headpiece worn by Mara and one of Hedlund’s Hook costumes. A replica of one of the tents from the native Neverland village was also on display. Warner Bros., Wright and Miller also hosted an event in Los Angeles Friday.

“Pan” is set to open in theaters on Oct. 9.

British filmmaker Joe Wright is daring to reinvent and reinvigorate the saga of Peter Pan. Wright’s new live-action family film, which is just called Pan, is Peter’s origins story. And audiences might not recognize the tale if they think the 1953 Disney animation is the definitive version.

“We are trying to show people something they haven’t seen before,” Wright tells Postmedia Network during a Toronto visit to show the media excerpts of his film in advance of its Oct. 9th release. “We tried to make a movie based on source material we all know very well — or think we do. But we tried to create something entirely fresh and new with it.”

The story of Peter Pan, the mischievous boy who wouldn’t grow up, was created in 1902 by Scottish author and playwright J.M. Barrie. The Neverland saga then became almost mythological when Barrie created the famous Peter Pan play in 1904. Its popularity led to Barrie’s expansion of the story in a 1911 novel, Peter and Wendy. Peter Pan is now an enduring part of popular culture, appearing in a variety of films as early as a 1924 silent and being referenced widely, including in psychology with the emergence of the “Peter Pan Syndrome” among men.

Wright says he took the same approach to Pan as he did when he filmed Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice for his directorial debut in 2005. “I guess for me it is what I tried with Pride & Prejudice, really. I had to completely disregard what I think everyone else wants and really make the film that happened inside my head when I read the book. I had to make a personal interpretation and, if it’s true to me, hopefully it will be true to other people as well.

“I think the danger is engaging too much in other people’s expectations. It is a trap because you never know what is happening inside their heads, anyway, and you certainly can’t please all the people all the time. So you just have to stay true to your own imagination and your own interpretation.”

In the excerpts, the Neverland sequences in Pan look fantastical, like a mash-up of Terry Gilliam films such as Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen with Hollywood adventure romps such as Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. The tone, Wright boasts, even gets “silly” for him. That is in stark contrast to all his earlier adult-themed films from Pride & Prejudice through Atonement (2007), Hanna (2011) and Anna Karenina (2012).




Wright, of course, made Pan for children, specially his own two young sons with wife Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of legendary Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar. Their first son was born in 2011; their second is just five months old.

“Pan is a coming-of-age story,” Wright explains, “and the emotional journey that Peter is on is about him searching for his mother. When I watched my own first son fall so deeply head over heels in love with his mum — and her with him — I was really kind of profoundly moved by it. So this film is in a way a testament to that relationship and a celebration of that love, really. That relationship is the fundamental one that will shape the rest of his life.”

That said, the tenderness of mother-son relationships is the subtle part of Pan. The colourful and fantastical parts of the film take place in Neverland — with an extravagant, moustached Hugh Jackman playing the pirate Blackbeard. At this point in the saga, James Hook (played like Indiana Jones light by Garrett Hedlund) still has both hands, not yet losing one to the crocodile. Meanwhile, both Hook and Smee (Adeel Akhtar) are actually friends (albeit future enemies) with the newly arrived Peter (who is played by Australian-born boy actor Levi Miller). The action is wild and crazy.

“That is what I love about action,” Wright says, “because it is a purely cinematic form.”

Wright did layer references and ideas for adults, as he does in all his films. Yet he knew the “silly” stuff was necessary, too. “I always try to put things in films that people won’t necessarily appreciate or notice on the first viewing. If there is stuff that is beyond the audience’s perception, then that is where there is magic. But it is true that Pan has to capture a very young audience as well and one has to be quite bold!”

The English director appeared with 'Pan' newcomer Levi Miller on Friday at LA's London Hotel and showed clips and explained how he's reworked the J.M. Barrie classic.




Joe Wright ("Anna Karenina," "Atonement") has applied his renowned theatrical flair to "Pan" (October 9), setting it during World War II and melding it with bits of Harry Potter, "Oliver!" and Steven Spielberg. But judging from the 20 minutes of footage screened on Friday, it's fantastical as well, with flying Pirate ships and oceans in the sky. It's sure to be one of the buzzy Oscar craft contenders for cinematography (Seamus McGarvey and John Mathieson), production design (Aline Bonetto) and costume design (Jacqueline Durran, who's already won for "Anna Karenina").

It's an origin story about the boy who refuses to grow up in which "enemies become friends and friends become enemies."

In Wright's version (scripted by Jason Fuchs), however, Pan's (Levi Miller) a mischievous 12-year-old orphan, who escapes to Neverland and helps lead a revolt as the chosen one against Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). He enslaves the Lost Boys and wages war with the natives, led by warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara).

Wright explained that he made "Pan" for his young son, Zubin Shankar, whose love of trampolines inspired a ritualistic fight among the natives of Neverland involving Garrett Hedlund's James Hook (think Indiana Jones before losing his hand and turning to the dark side).

"It's a re-framing of the Peter Pan myth," Wright added. "I pored over the novel and was surprised by how strange it was." He told me afterward that it's very Freudian, with Mrs. Darling describing how she rearranges the minds of her children.

Jackman, who's always wanted to play a pirate, gets to chew up the scenery in grand fashion as Blackbeard, the antithesis of Wolverine. Wright quipped that "this hand sanitizing-thing has gotta stop," so he couldn't resist making him a germophobe. "He plays him very, very dark but always in a kind of English pantomime," slightly winking to the audience.

Wright said the natives of Neverland are a global indigenous fabric, but with lots of Native American and Mongolian influence. "Pan" additionally marks Wright's digital debut, which worked out fine except for his displeasure with the color red. He said it can't compare with film. Although Wright limited the use of CG, he touted the work of Scanline VFX, Framestore, MPC and Rising Sun Pictures, particularly for the swashbuckling action in the sky.

But if "Pan" does well at the box office and spawns a sequel, Wright won't be stepping immediately back into Neverland: he has immediate plans for more of his typical storytelling.

So without Captain Hook as Pan's biggest adversary, who would step into the role as Neverland's biggest baddie? According to Wright, Hugh Jackman has always wanted to play a pirate. And as Blackbeard, the true villain of Pan, he got the chance. "He said that he'd been wanting to play a pirate for a long time, which is a weird life ambition. 'Agent, get me a pirate,'" Wright jokes. "It's a grand performance but there's hopefully layers of subtlety beneath. Hugh, as you know, has a great history of working in the theater, and that was something I was particularly drawn to when thinking about this role. He plays him very, very dark, but there's always a slight wink to the audience, an inclusiveness. He nailed it."

Levi Miller, the young teenage picked out of thousands to plan Pan, admits to being intimidated by Jackman on set. "The character that he played was quite scary. The character alone, that scared me," Miller says.

"He's the nicest man on the planet," Wright assures. "The first couple days of rehearsal, Levi refused to call him anything other than Hugh Jackman. 'Hello, Hugh Jackson. Good morning, Hugh Jackman.' It took a little while for him to be able to relax and just call him Hugh."

Hollywood can’t get enough of origin stories, can it? After origin stories of Batman (Batman Begins), Wolverine (X-Men Origins: The Wolverine) and Fantastic Four, producers Warners Bros take us to the origins of Peter Pan and Captain Hook in Pan. The original novel by JM Barrie has been adapted a number of times on screen, stage, animated film, but one can look forward to this one purely to see how actor Hugh Jackman plays Captain Hook. Neverland looks stunning in this trailer and promises to be a treat for families.

What it’s about: Remember how Steven Spielberg’s Hook showed us what happened after the classic story of Peter Pan? Joe Wright’s Pan is the story of what happened before it. Peter is just a boy discovering Neverland, Hook isn’t the tyrant we all love to hate, and all of this is heavily influenced by J.M. Barrie’s original writings with a huge treasure trove of special effects.

The Forecast: A great cast, including Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara, will give this film a shot—but so far, the trailers don’t make it look as though it’s going to hit the heights of other recent live-action fairy tale films. But we loved Wright’s Hanna, and the trailer makes Neverland look gorgeous.

There seems to be a running cynicism about this film...or is just lack of general knowledge on what it is all about. Obviously, the writer did not note that this film has a script with a Black List pedigree, while acknowledging the creative talents ( the cast and the director, and the production design). I don't see how the trailers cannot fail to impress. It is pitched to a broad audience range, not simply to the kiddie generation.

The actor has taken on some pretty epic roles, including mutant Wolverine and Blackbeard in upcoming film Pan. If anyone thinks he has a penchant for fantastical characters, they'd be right.

"Oh, it's the natural showman in me," he smiled to Psychologies magazine. "I grew up falling in love with musical theatre and once you have that in your blood you love playing roles that have this theatrical quality. It's a chance to let go completely and step into these fantastic characters who transport you and the audience into a different reality. I love the sense of spectacle and wonder of all that."

Hugh was one of five children, so it would stand to reason that a bit of sibling rivalry came into play. However, it hasn't affected the way he works as an actor, with the star insisting he's not competitive.

"Not as an actor," he explained. "I look on acting and filmmaking as a very collaborative process and I don't look at films strictly from my character's viewpoint. I've never wanted to be the biggest star on earth. I love acting and I'm interested in the work and the kind of stories I'm able to bring to audiences."

The next film he'll be presenting to audiences is the mystical Pan, which also stars Cara Delevingne as a mermaid. It's a prequel to Peter Pan and Hugh is very excited.

"It's a very smart film with lots of heart," he gushed.

Pan hits cinemas worldwide from October.
