God I'm still pissed off DDL won for Lincoln. It's a good performance and he is a great actor but that whole method thing...I find this very disrespectful to the cast and crew when someone stays in the character and is difficult on the set. Hugh, for me, absolutely carried Les Mis and should have won. It's baffling to me that he was only nominated once. He is so well liked, a great actor and he is always promoting his films. I'm actually more excited about him doing talk shows in December than for the movie

Hugh does not do the Hollywood scene. He and his family choose to live in NYC. It seems that the only one who is Hollywood-based that he has kept in touch with on a regular basis has been his longtime agent and longtime friend Patrick Whitesell ( now Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of WME-IMG)! Although he is also the only actor I have seen where big studio heads were present for either his Grauman Chinese Theatre hand/footprints ceremony ( Rupert Murdoch, Gianopulos, Rothman) or Walk of Fame STAR ceremony ( Gianopulos, Jeffrey Katzenberg of Dreamworks, Universal studio head Ron Meyer). You don't usually see those key people attending ceremonies like those.

Personally, I think the real picture will shape up once the movies are screened presumably earlier for film critics ( and maybe the movie press) AND most importantly how strongly the major studios will position their bets in the campaign. Exactly. Everything else is pure speculation at this point of time! A few movies will drop out, a few others - the one or another surprise - will move up on the list. As every year. Re DDL, if his movie sucks, he won't get another nod either. For instance, he wasn't nominated for Nine either. Since apparently nobody has seen his finished movie yet, nobody can know for sure if he really receives another nomination. The same goes for Hugh and anyone else whose movies aren't officially screened or released yet. And even after all movies are released, there will be one or another surprise. At the moment all we can do is to hope that Hugh gets nominated for anything - either for Logan or for TGS. And if it doesn't work out this year, he has perhaps more luck next year with The Front Runner.

Hugh is always there on Fallon playing games

Re DDL's PHANTOM THREAD movie - Jeff Wells said he heard at this point that the movie is almost 3 hours long ( presumably PTAnderson can go either way with what to do with it - edit further or keep it as it is. Earlier sccops say that it is like FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. For the story of a famous fashion designer in London, who supposedly dressed royalty?
LINCOLN was a different story -- a biopic of a beloved American president, directed by Spielberg, and publicized by Spielberg ( White House screening, TIME cover story as Greatest Actor of His Generation, etc).

What I mean by not doing the Hollywood scene is with reference to the social scene in Hollywood. If you're not seen too often ( parties, other publicity events), people may not get to know you personally... Even during the Oscar campaign for Les Miserables, he would only spend part of his time for the obligatory socializing and screenings/Q&As... half of the time he was filming PRISONERS in Georgia. Hugh publicizes his movies ( media junket) as that is part usually of contractual obligations ( especially for blockbusters which spend an awful lot of money for publicity). And he works hard at it! When he did the media interviews for LOGAN in NYC people noticed how tired he was ( but he was still very gracious during the series of short interviews). He had just come from an overnight filming for GREATEST SHOWMAN and has not had time to sleep! Oldman has had only one nomination so far. Hollywood is always impressed with British actors! I don't know why .. I do like some of them ( Vanessa R who is a more natural and versatile actress than say Judi M or Maggie S or Helen M - although they are also good) but Lawrence Olivier or even Kenneth Branagh in his filmed Shakespearen portrayals are not my cup of tea. They are probably excellent theatre actors ( I have seen a few straight plays at the West End, where I had seen a lot more musicals) for more classical or serious plays but they do not necessarily translate to excellent actors in all genres and in all branches of the performing arts. I also do not like when the actors seem or sound too mannered! Do they have actors who are both excellent in movies ( as top draw) and in both musical theatre/dramatic theatre? I did like the late Richard Burton but mainly for his speaking voice! I do have a rare copy of his Hamlet portrayal ( when I saw Jude Law in his Broadway stint for Hamlet - er... that was not impressive at all!) ... and RB may not really be a musical theatre actor but I will listen to the remastered CD of Camelot everytime! And yet Burton never did win an Oscar, from my recollection. Maybe Hugh should disclose publicly that he also carries a British passport ( which he does!) and that he has British ancestry although I imagine that his genes which gave him such good looks came from his Greek ancestry Personally, I am not overly impressed with actor portrayals of historical figures where makeup, weight loss/gain, other prosthetics, accents, gait are 100% copied from the real thing ( especially very famous people). That is not acting - that is more like impersonation -sorry! Sadly, Hollywood awards are littered with those ( and even DiCaprio ranted about how some people win awards for simply losing a lot of weight) I am hoping that Hugh Jackman's portrayal of GARY HART will not be a 100% attempt to look or sound exactly like him - I want to see room for an actor's dramatic aura to shine through. Maybe a general impression to create that we are seeing a real-life personality but interpreted maybe in a slightly different way from the real person. I do not want a full mimicry of the real Gary Hart. I am glad that despite some people saying that they look alike in the compared photos - -that that is really an exaggeration. Even the hairstyle is slightly different. But we'll see... As of now, there is no release date yet for THE FRONTRUNNER...nor is there any news that it has been picked up for distribution by a major studio or its subsidiary. Jo

I agree, Jo. One exception might be Colin Firth in THE KING'S SPEECH. No effort was made to make him look like the king. His portrayal was based on character (and of course speech). I know the Academy has a short memory, and LOGAN was a spring/summer film, but I'm still hoping for at least a nomination. Hopefully between LOCAN, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, and THE FRONT RUNNER, the Academy can recognize Hugh.

Kathy, They did not try to make Colin look exactly like George VI -- it was his interpretation of the character and singular physical attribute ( which was the main topic of the movie) of the monarch which was key to his performance. Colin did not look all all like a Windsor Interesting fact -- for their first choices the author wanted Paul Bettany ( the albino in Da Vinci Code) for the king's part while director Tom Hooper preferred Hugh Grant as the monarch. Btw, Tom chose between Paul Bettany and Russell Crowe for Javert...but finally got his "Hugh" for Valjean A bit ironic, two Aussies were eventually cast to portray Frenchmen in the English version of LES MISERABLES. Jeff Wells has published a new Oscar Spitball ( guesses, ranked as to which one might win Best Picture) and it seems he has banished SHOWMAN from his list ( although he stops at # 8 here). *Call Me is his favorite ever since -- not surprised he will put it on top. *Some of his audience question his motives for putting APES on the list when nobody is talking about it anymore, even accusing him of pecuniary motives *Two unseen movies ( Phantom Thread and The Post) are high on his list -- it seems auteur-driven movies will always find favor with the movie press? Btw, he continues to list SHOWMAN as one of 9 likeliest contenders for nominations ( Oscar Balloon). Ha - maybe he has not had time to update it? I guess we will have to just be patient about waiting for all rightful guesses in less than two months -- Golden Globes nods are due in early December ( so presumably, early screenings or screeners will be arranged for the unseen movies)! Per Hollywood Reporter, here is the schedule for Golden Globes --
The Golden Globes are considered not just as forerunners but also as drivers of the key dates of he awards campaigns!

It looks like SHOWMAN may really be playing it close to its chest -- it is likely that the full publicity blast for the movie release and for any awards consideration may happen soon and towards November ( and more box-office oriented pitches closer to its release date)? Just guessing, of course PS: Do you remember the unnerving wait for TOM HOOPER to complete LES MISERABLES in time for AWARDS consideration and its premiere ( they ended up postponing the early December premiere to a week-or-so later) but I do remember the first screenings for presumably the awards community then. Hopefully, it will be more manageable timetables for SHOWMAN this time? Jo

A research blog on "How much do Hollywood campaigns for an Oscar cost?"
has been posted on the Off-Topic Section ( Understanding the Film Business/Awards).
It is a very well-researched and informative article on the cost of Oscar campaigns.

Veering away from the topic of the SOUNDTRACK, but on which song will likely walk away with an Oscar --
It seems THIS IS ME, at the moment, is GREATEST SHOWMAN'S best bet!
It is beautifully written, it is socially relevant, it is contemporary in sound and words, and it is exceptionally performed by Keala Settle.
The fans of Beauty and the Beast think that the new song written for the movie called EVERMORE will please OSCAR voters. Have a listen --

The writer obviously did not check the written responses and the posted LIKE/DISLIKE ratio on the official YouTube uploads of the two released tracks ( LIKE ratio of at least 95% for both tracks!). He is obviously trying to rationalize why he is writing about the Oscar chances of GREATEST SHOWMAN in a breezy manner Jo

The writer from Film Experience missed taking in this kind of reaction! A very positive response to a musical score with a contemporary tone!

Does this mean that the UK release date of January 1, 2018 disqualifies the movie for the coming BAFTA Awards

variety.com/2017/film/in-contention/studios-indies-stake-claim-for-globes-comedy-gold-1202604158/Why would FOX want to broadcast that their movie musical THE GREATEST SHOWMAN is not meant for Oscar glory, only for box office success? That is very unusual or unheard of -- one simply keeps quiet if the end-product is unsure to please the critics. Jeff Wells has also mentioned the same feedback that he got - that the movie is only for commercial and not for awards play I have wondered if FOX is employing a very unique marketing strategy?? A reverse but effective strategy ?? Play it as if there are no expectations from this movie -- and then let the film explode with artistic excellence and powerful performances ... gearing it for unexpected fulsome critical praise when it finally opens?? Those guys at Fox Marketing are very good at pushing their products these days -- look at what they did for LOGAN! Jo

One of the awaited biopics is THE POST. A while ago, when FOX abruptly moved up the release date of SHOWMAN to December 20, from its original Christmas Day release, I speculated that it could be so as to give THE POST a wide release option ( it was opening on a LIMITED basis on Dec 22). Well -- The trailer for THE POST has just been posted on the FOX site. www.foxmovies.com/movies/the-post#featured-videos*At the end, it says that it will only be in a limited number of theaters on Dec 22 and will open wide only on Jan 12 ( so that debunks my suspicion, which I have already dropped because of other factors, that the accelerated release date of Showman was due to favoring The Post). (Jo's note : Mea culpa ) *Based on the trailer -- this is really for mature audiences and while it may be excellent Oscar bait, it is not likely that its box office appeal may be that competitive with SHOWMAN. Tom Hanks seems to give a more forceful and more interesting performance. I don't know about the role of Meryl -- she is completely too mannered here...maybe it builds up towards the best part of the movie. This is a biopic of sorts ( Ben Bradlee and Kay Graham of The Washington Post) which dates to fairly recent historical events - but will it be enough to engage the attention of the younger end of the desired demos? Two other historical biopics ( Darkest Hour with Churchill and Dunkirk) in addition to The Post will vie with another biopic of the latter part of the 19th century ( Hint: The lead wears a startling red coat and a vest all in gold and has a top hat) -- color vs grey Jo

Okay -- where did the talk come from that THE GREATEST SHOWMAN is NOT prepping for both AWARDS-PLAY and COMMERCIAL-PLAY?? Why is Hugh Jackman's name mentioned for both movies by Pete Hammond and why did Hugh himself affirm that? Jo

Per Hollywood Reporter, here is the schedule for Golden Globes -- Entwined with Oscar/GoldenGlobe/SAG campaigning is of course the publicity blast prior to the release of the movie, which would include the media junket, print interviews, and TV/radio appearances, and presumably some selected premieres in a few cities worldwide? Will SHOWMAN be submitted for awards consideration? Given that it seemed to have been discussed in the report on the Governors Awards, it is likely. Given that the GGlobes deadline for final screening and Q&A's( presumably with appearances of the key creatives and cast) is December 4, 2017, that presumes the final cut will have been been completed no later than that date. Will FOX arrange the same SAG/AFTRA screening at the Fox studio like it was done for LOGAN? My fearless forecast ( lol - you don't have to along with my wild guess) of the world premiere at the QMary2 date is December 9, 2017. My guess is based on the date of the key lottery contest (for a special event in NYC with special guests - strictly on invite only) which has been publicized on the SHOWMAN official site. Also, the timing of the release of the full soundtrack on December 8, 2017 may have been tied in with the premiere of the movie. When will the media tour happen? Before the world premiere? Likely! Hugh is due to receive the BAMBI award in Berlin on November 16. Will he follow that with the media tour in key cities in Europe ( if any)? These appearances can be pre-recorded and shown closer to release dates? Also, will there be scheduled premieres in some key European cities? Then maybe the media tour in the USA, including talk show appearances? Will the media tour and maybe key premieres extend to Asia? South America? If SHOWMAN gets GGlobes nominations ( due out on December 11, 2017), will there be special campaigning for the win? I am also assuming that some key members of the awards communities will be invited to the world premiere ( It would be hard to say NO to a glittering premiere event ... although final nomination votes for GGlobes will have to be submitted on December 7 ). Just speculating, of course Jo
