Hugh was interviewed on The Project. If you patiently scroll through Twitter, they have uploaded a three-part clip of his appearance.

To summarize the most interesting bits --


*He was there to promote PAN. He shared that he was pleasantly surprised to know that the script was actually part of the Black List. He said that it was the best 6 months of his life in terms of not being publicly recognized, except for one girl at Disneyworld who told him that he looked like a pirate

*It seems he does go to Rusty's BBQs often ( and that RC sent him a note apologizing for overdoing the chicken)

*He says that social media ( which he did not appreciate very well initially) has turned out to be a welcome aspect for him -- he says the paps have toned down their following him everywhere. Besides he says he can take a better selfie.

*Ava is always the one who keeps him grounded. When he asked her if she didn't find his Blackbeard awesome and scary, she said : "It's you!"...Then when he said that he thought he portrayed an edgy character ( who can scare the kids in this family movie), she said :"Dad, you have no edge".

*One of the panel told him that he saw Hugh in The River and that there was a scene lasting about 6-7 minutes where Hugh was actually preparing and cooking the fish dinner. He said that he overheard two mature ladies sighing : "He can do everything", implying that there was some sexuality about the charged moments of preparing fish

*He was asked if he would consider playing the role of James Bond, if Daniel gives up the role. He mentioned the early interest in him when he was doing XMEN-2. But now, he would "seriously consider" the role! Bond producers : Hint, hint!!

*He also shared how the young man who was in charge of a charity shop ( TIP?) where he brought the garage sale items that did not sell was not suitably impressed. LOL - he eventually asked him if he could have a photo and an autograph ( so he could show off to his girl friends).

*He also shared his boyhood techniques for faking an excuse to miss school

Hugh was so relaxed and very comfortable with his Aussie countrymen!

Btw, PAN is opening in Australia on September 24!

Thanks for posting this, Jo. (I've just returned from a Las Vegas visit to my brother and am catching up on all the news, finally having full computer access again.) Great to see something like this today. I love that he said he'd "seriously consider" Bond. If that ever happened, I'd "seriously consider" actually seeing a Bond movie in a movie theater!

He does look so relaxed and comfy with his fellow Aussies. So good to see.

PS to the interview on The Project --

Hugh has said that he would probably be a better diplomat than a politician in another forum.

To prove that -- when he was asked what he thought of Nick Kyrgios ( the new l'enfant terrible of tennis), Hugh at first said that he remembered what he was when he was 26 ( with reference to Kyrgios's excuse that at 20, he is expected to be less mature but will learn with age...but then Hugh said that if he were Kyrgios ( who is half-Greek and half-Malaysian but was raised in Canberra) he would think at least 5 times before he said anything!

What a contrast -- Hugh ( who also has Greek blood) is arguably considered as the nicest Australian around, while Kyrgios has been maligned for his social gaffes and his boorish behavior on court! I remember reading a recent article on a tennis site where the author wrote about "tennis gentlemen ( and Kyrgios)", which had a very pointed reference to his court antics!

In case you are not tennis fans, his most offensive behavior came when he taunted the player he was playing with across the net with " your girlfriend is sleeping with an Aussie player" ( whom he actually named), said in less polite language, to distract his opponent. He also has regular altercations with the referees and mutters many offensive remarks that can be caught on offside cameras/mics. He is a talented and very promising player but he is beginning to be more known for his behavior than his game. He can take a lesson or two from Hugh!

HUGH Jackman this morning visited iconic Melbourne tourist destination Polly Woodside to start the promotional trail for his new film Pan.

The Polly Woodside became the Jolly Roger for the morning.

Jackman was joined by the star of the show, Australian child actor Levi Hill, who plays Peter Pan in the remake of an old-time classic.


In the film Jackman is almost unrecognisable as the ruthless pirate Blackbeard.


The film will be released in Australia on September 24.

Jackman has had a busy couple of weeks back home in Melbourne, working on his new arena show.

He will be attend(ing) the Red Ball on Saturday night with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness.

Hugh Jackman is sitting in a pirate ship (well, the Polly Woodside) in Melbourne, talking about his role as Blackbeard in the Peter Pan origin story Pan, a film in which Australia's favourite big-screen hero makes a rare appearance on the side of the moral ledger marked "evil".

So, how does it feel to play the villain for a change?

"Great," he says, flashing that million-dollar smile. "Finally, the real me. It took me all these years to work out that the hero gets beaten up most of the movie and then wins the last fight, just. Whereas the villain has a pretty easy go of it most of the time, except for the end. You get great dialogue, great costumes, about 40 per cent of screen time..."

Jackman's Blackbeard is a terrific villain, part-panto, part-Broadway. He's all swagger, flash and malice, an operatic bad guy in flouncy trousers and puffy shirt.

He first appears on screen high above the mines of Neverland, where hundreds of boy slaves toil in search of the fairy crystals that will bring him eternal youth before joining him in a choral version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. As entrances go, it's a showstopper.

It certainly stopped the studio execs in their tracks when they first saw it, Jackman says. "I remember seeing their faces. They were thinking 'Er, are we making a musical here? What's going on?'"

In fact, they were making a film that ticks all the boxes of family friendly adventure but has a seriously dark underbelly. The early scenes are set in an orphanage in London during WWII (more than three decades after JM Barrie's first Pan stories appeared) that's run by harsh Irish Catholic nuns who sell the young boys in their care to pirates who descend from the ceiling while the kids are asleep and snatch them away.

Surely, I say, this is some sort of comment upon institutionalised child abuse?

Jackman visibly flinches at the question.

"That's the first time I've thought about it, and of course I've sat back as you say it because it's very much in the spotlight right now," he says.

"I didn't see it as that. If I can speak for JM Barrie and the original story, it's very much that idea of the freedom that kids have, that sense of wonder, the sense that often in life – the school and everything – they can feel sometimes trapped. And that desire that probably never leaves us to go on an adventure, to fight pirates and natives and walk around and do what you want, it just sort of exists."

He says Wright is someone who has read and thought deeply about the darkness inherent in fairytales. "As he pointed out to me, it's [about] the exorcism of the fears that every kid has, being snatched, the bogeyman, the dark, whatever it is."

One aspect of the tale that Jackman did ponder deeply was the orphanage setting.

"Well, I have adopted kids so of course it was something I watched very closely," he says. "I said to Joe, 'Look, at some stage I've got to sit down with my kids and watch it, and I don't want any feeling with them of feeling awkward'. And he was very sensitive to that. There were a couple of things he changed, actually."

HUGH Jackman has revealed his the haircut he is sporting in his new movie Pan has revived his high-school nickname — “Peahead”.

To play the villainous pirate Blackbeard in the big-budget Peter Pan origin story, which also stars rising Brisbane star Levi Miller, Jackman shaved his head, grew a goatee and donned rotting false teeth, continuing a run of dodgy movie haircuts.

“I was getting a lot of text messages from my mates at school who used to call me ‘peahead’ because I had a small head in relation to my shoulders,” he said while promoting the movie at Melbourne’s Polly Woodside tall ship yesterday.

“They were all like, ‘peahead’s back’.”

“I have had some bad haircuts — I sported a mullet in two things. I think this was probably worse though.”



But there was an upside for the Aussie star, who is currently based in Melbourne rehearsing for his Broadway To Oz arena tour, which will tour the country in November.

“A lot of people thought it was a big sacrifice, but for me it was so great,” he said.

“No one recognised me — I didn’t have to worry about my hair. It felt so good in the shower and swimming. I loved that.”

Jackman sang the praises of his young co-star Miller who auditioned on three continents and beat out thousands other young hopefuls to land the coveted role of Peter Pan in the fantasy epic that also stars Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara and Cara Delevingne.

“He’s a natural — I actually probably learned from him,” said Jackman. “He reminded me of how lucky we are to do what we do. He loved the challenge of it and he has no idea of how good he is.”


Jackman also hosed down speculation that he might be the next James Bond, after saying on Channel 10’s The Project on Wednesday night that he’d “seriously consider it” if he was asked. He was approached to play the super spy a decade ago, when the part when to Daniel Craig, with whom Jackman later starred in the Broadway play, A Steady Rain.

At the time he was getting ready to reprise his role as Wolverine in X-Men 2, and had to pass. His name has often come up as a potential successor to Craig, even if one online betting agency now has him as a $34 outsider, well behind favourites such as Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy and Idris Elba.

“I’d like to think it was close, but since then I have found out there were about eight guys who were asked when I was asked,” he said. “And I know (Bond producer) Barbara Broccoli well because we did a play together so I think if I was a chance, I think I might have known by now. “I would say at $34 bucks — that’s not a great bet.”

Pan opens on September 24.

PAN HITS CINEMAS ON OCTOBER 16

Remember when they laid out red carpets on Leicester Square for the film premiere of Les Miserables? I thought that was already something. And also when Hugh arrived on an Audi for the premiere of The Wolverine?

This is something else!


Leicester Square ( which I used to cross very often -- because my usual hotel when I used to visit the city very often is right at the edge of the Square -- on the way to the West End theatres or on the way to Covent Guardian or even Cecil Court for antique prints or go to the Strand or to the National Gallery), to me, is really the true crossroads of London - not Piccadilly Square, which looks grand, but leads you only to many historical streets and not the same kind of activities that really attract a longtime London visitor) is an ideal place for the promotion. It is mostly a cemented area with a small park in the middle and with major cinemas on the periphery! I would even dare say that it is almost like Times Square because of the entertainment attractions and where you can get TKTS tickets -- but it does have a park with trees, so it can be a wonderful part of Neverland.
