Despite the rigours of an intense media schedule, Guy Davis finds Hugh Jackman just as amenable and approachable as he'd imagined.

A two-day media junket, where the talent is subjected to an ongoing barrage of nine-minute interrogations by an unbroken stream of reporters, is enough to test the patience of the most even-tempered performers.

So it speaks volumes about the legendary and seemingly limitless affability of Hugh Jackman that the Australian actor is able to maintain good humour and laid-back charm during his recent press commitments for Pan, the upcoming re-imagining of the Peter Pan story, in which he portrays the pirate Blackbeard, the original nemesis of the boy who never grew up.

If the berserker rage Jackman regularly unleashes in his signature role as surly, steel-clawed superhero Wolverine is at all simmering, he's doing a great job of keeping it from reaching boiling point. There is, of course, more to Jackman than his star-making role in the X-Men franchise. Over a two-decade stage and screen career, he's proven himself adept in challenging dramas and charming romantic comedies. And then there are his talents as a song-and-dance man to be reckoned with.


"He used to put sticks of incense in his beard and light them so there was a cloud of smoke around his head as he emerged with his cutlass."

Strangely enough, his role in Pan — directed by Joe Wright of Pride & Prejudice and Hanna fame — gives him the opportunity to showcase many of these skills, with Blackbeard emerging as a fearsome villain, a flamboyant showman and a melancholic veteran of many, many battles.

"It was an embarrassment of riches," smiles Jackman, recalling the role. "It was a lot of scenery-chewing, playing to the back rows and having the time of my life, and then Joe randomly comes up with this idea at rehearsals where he handed out lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit and I make my entrance to a Nirvana song. There were no rules!"

In Pan, which, as you can imagine puts a few new twists on the origin of Peter Pan (played by young newcomer Levi Miller): "Adults had to be as children see them — ridiculous and frightening in equal measure," says Jackman. So while the actor's Blackbeard is torn between between vanquishing this young upstart and "almost wishing him to fulfil his greatest fear" he also had to a cut a larger-than-life figure. And that's where Wright had a few innovative ideas.

"I thought we were going to use the historical version of Blackbeard, which is quite theatrical and amazing, by the way — he used to put sticks of incense in his beard and light them so there was a cloud of smoke around his head as he emerged with his cutlass," laughs Jackman. "But no, Joe showed me a picture that had my face, a Marie Antoinette wig, a Louis XIV costume and all this bling. And I was like, 'Oh, I'm in.'"

Jackman has collaborated with the likes of Woody Allen, Christopher Nolan, Baz Luhrmann and Darren Aronofsky, and says he's come to realise that film is very much a director's medium.

"Actors can make three movies a year; a director makes a movie every two or three years. A great director knows that if they're lucky they can make ten movies in their life, so these great directors make tough choices — they don't go into things lightly. So whatever is on the page, the director may even be more important. That's been guiding me over the last ten years. Joe Wright is a director of the highest order and I was really keen to work with him."

Still, the stage frequently beckons Jackman, who believes that "being on stage makes me better on film and vice versa."


"When there are moments to put on a show, I really want to put on a show."

"After Pan I did a Jez Butterworth three-hander, a very poetic piece called The River," he says. "And it had a six-minute period in the middle of the play where I just prepared a meal with no dialogue and no one else on stage. It was just that for six minutes! I do like to go back and forth between stage and film, it's where I get the best out of myself, and I think I now enjoy film as much… but I'm most at home on a stage."

He'll get to feel very much at home later this year when he takes his stage show Broadway To Oz to five capital cities around Australia. "I obviously want the show to be fun and entertaining — a bit of a party — but at the same time, like Pan, it has moments of intimacy. I like to create an atmosphere, even though we're in an arena, of being in my living room, where people get to understand who I am and what I love.

"I'll sing songs from things I've been in and things I haven't, share stories about my life, make fun of myself and play with the audience. No two shows will be the same. And there'll be spectacle — I have an opportunity to do what I haven't done before, which is have a 35-piece orchestra, 20 dancers and incredible lighting. When there are moments to put on a show, I really want to put on a show."

And because variety is the spice of life, he'll then brandish the Wolverine claws one last time in a third solo movie featuring the iconic comic-book character. (When asked if he'll pop up in next year's X-Men: Apocalypse, he said "reportedly" with a smile.)

"I have announced that this next one I'm doing will be my last one, and that feels right," Jackman said of the upcoming sequel. "One thing that I'm finding in my middle age is a key to life is that rather than regret the end of a holiday or a weekend or a meal is instead think, 'That was great.' And this ride as Wolverine has been incredible and rewarding… and far longer than I thought it would be! So it feels like this is the time to say thank you."

The metallic shades (shown above) are all packed with shimmer, while two of them—Supernova (the pearlescent violet) and Borealis (a sparkly emerald)—have an iridescent finish that changes color depending on the way you look at them. My favorite is Borealis, which evokes the multifaceted effect of a peacock's feather (or better yet, a mermaid's tail). Earthshine is probably the most practical of the four. The cool taupe-y brown looks beautiful blended over lids and combined with black liner and mascara, and it's subtle enough to wear to work. The last shade, Moonbeam, is a silvery white with a hint of lilac that goes on sheer and can be layered (or applied with a damp brush) to increase the opacity. I'd hold on to this one and wear it as a wash on my lids during the holiday season. You can see swatches of each shadow below:

Wonderful interview -- Hugh is getting into the midst of the heavy promotion. It also gives us an indication of the tone of the movie ( one filmsite was apprehensive that it might be too focused on purely kiddie entertainment). It turns out that it will be a bit darker than we think and would access a much broader audience.

Hugh perfected his British accent listening to Richard Burton portray Winston Churchill( Burton was the most perfect enunciator -- is there such a word?). Interesting! Richard was actually Welsh but he spoke the Bard's language so well and other British roles, too. He and James Mason, to me, represented the perfect way to enunciate while acting.

Warner Bros. to Celebrate ‘Pan’ Release by Bringing Neverland to Life Worldwide

Fan events will be held in Melbourne, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York City, Mexico City and beyond

Warner Bros. has announced it will celebrate the release of Joe Wright‘s family adventure movie “Pan” with fan events around the world featuring stars Hugh Jackman and Levi Miller, with Rooney Mara and Garrett Hedlund joining them for several stops.

The whirlwind tour began on Sept. 2 in Australia, the home country of both Jackman and Miller, where “Pan” will make its global debut in theaters on Sept. 24. Melbourne students from five local public schools saw advance footage from the film, followed by a surprise Q&A with Jackman.

In London, Leicester Square is being transformed into the film’s vividly imagined Neverland, with the immersive take-over of its Gardens being opened to ticketed families for free on Saturday, Sept. 19. Under canopies of colorful tents, guests can discover Blackbeard’s Pirate Training Tent, Pan’s Warrior Tent, Tiger Lily’s Kingdom and watch performances on the Jolly Roger Stage. The following day, Leicester Square will also host the gala worldwide premiere of “Pan” at the Empire Cinema and the Odeon Leicester Square. Screenwriter Jason Fuchs will join the cast at both the London and New York premieres.

In Hong Kong, from Sept. 18 to Oct. 11, the city’s Times Square Mall will host a massive installation entitled “Every Legend Has a Beginning.” Featuring a village inspired by Tiger Lily’s in the film, plus a Jolly Roger ship modeled after the one in Blackbeard’s fleet, the mall will offer a multimedia experience for fans with a variety of performances and imagery from the film and fans will have the opportunity to meet and greet Jackman on Monday, Sept. 28. On the same day, Jackman will also become the first international star ever to participate in the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival celebration in Hong Kong, the Fire Dragon Festival. As a special honor, Jackman will be asked to hold the Fire Dragon’s pearl in the parade.

On Oct. 1, Jackman, Miller and Wright will fly to Tokyo for the film’s premiere event, streamed live online from the Roppongi Hills Area at the Keyakizaka Complex, which will be transformed from stem to stern in the style of Neverland. The stars will be joined there by major Japanese musical artist Seiko Matsuda, before heading onto the TOHO Cinemas to view the film, which opens across Japan on Oct. 31.

New York City hosts the gala U.S. premiere at the legendary Ziegfeld Theater on Sunday, Oct. 4, ahead of the film’s Oct. 9 nationwide debut.

In Mexico City on Tuesday, Oct. 6, the trio of Jackman, Miller and Wright will attend the film’s Latin American premiere at the all-new Toreo Parque Central’s vast Cinepolis Complex. With designs inspired by the Neverland natives’ village, Mermaid Lagoon and the Jolly Roger itself, a special live drum performance will be part of one of the most spectacular premiere events ever hosted in the country. All of these iconic Neverland elements will remain at Toreo Parque Central until Oct. 18, giving families the opportunity to visit this exhibition for 12 extra days.

As Neverland sweeps the globe, a dazzling selection of the film’s costumes will simultaneously be debuting in exhibits throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s creations for Jackman’s Blackbeard, Miller’s Peter, Hedlund’s Hook and Mara’s Tiger Lily will be showcased at or around the events in Hong Kong at Times Square Mall, London, New York City, Madrid and Mexico City. Added stops include Prague, Dubai, Athens and more, with exact locations and dates to be announced.

There will also be mall installations including Brazil, Italy, the UAE and beyond, plus an airship with the Jolly Roger hitting the skies above Germany at events in Hamburg and Frankfurt.

Wright directed “Pan” from a script by Fuchs, based on the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Paul Webster produced the film, which was executive produced by Tim Lewis.

Amanda Seyfried co-stars as Mary alongside Adeel Akhtar as Smee; Taejoo Na as Kwahu; Nonso Anozie as Bishop; Kathy Burke as Mother Barnabas; Kurt Egyiawan as Murray; Lewis MacDougall as Nibs; and Jack Charles as The Chief. The film is set for a worldwide release in 2D and 3D.

*It is going to be a whirlwind schedule for Hugh!

Following the current week media promotion in London ( and probably a bit of Europe if he did take the trip on the Eurostar) and the worldwide premiere on September 20, Hugh will host the Global Citizen event in NYC on September 26...then flies west to Hongkong for the September 28 Meet and Greet event. On October 1, he will be in Tokyo for the related PAN event...then back eastward for the October 4 NYC film premiere...then south to Mexico City for the October 6 premiere.

Why has Hollywood now generally been left out of premieres, not just for this one but also for other blockbusters?

*The publicity trail is anchored on Hugh's worldwide popularity and the universal appeal of the century-old book. If the first choice for the role of Blackbeard, Javier Bardem, had accepted the role -- would Warner Bros have supported the same kind of publicity pitch ( now being focused on Hugh Jackman's fame)?

*No mention of a China release to-date.
